First of all the word "nigga" has been used in and out of rap music for sometime. This word has been associated with not only black culture but the music as well which is fine, but what is not fine is the double standard africans have when it comes to race. Look at a majority of the stand up comedy gigs you see. You hear many many foul, degrading, racist words from these individuals and no uproar is made. This is confusing on lots of levels because what the african community is saying is that it's OK for us to bring down the opposite race but if one of them say anything remotely close to a racist comment his career will be ended and he will be humilated in front of all. Now it's not that I don't agree with the results of Imus being fired, but I don't agree with the double standards that are placed on our society. Until changes happen within the african culture, and it's addressed head on then we will continue to see situations like this appear. Kanye West is BY FAR the best producer in the game right now. The only person even close is Just Blaze. Mannie Fresh is also in their league. Those three are simply on another level. Alchemist, 9th Wonder, and Shawty Redd, Cool and Dre, and The Runners get honorable mention.

Rappers do not represent black culture as a whole. Jay Z, 50 Cent, ect may be influential but they are not the only leaders...what about Micheal Eric Dyson, Cornell West, Maya Angelou, ect. I think intellectuals and other non-entertainers are more influential, because their audience can vote and has the power to change. As far as Don Imus...he should have been fired because he has gotten away with too many slurs...but what about the guy who was on the show with him? and Imus' superiors? But if a white person STILL TODAY uses that N word, what has changed? How have you transformed the word? How have you taken it for your own and made it not derogatory? Most white people's experience or understanding of the black community comes from pop culture. That's how rap comes into this discussion. It IS related. I have had MANY white people say to me they really believe blacks are "over" the negative meaning of the N word because they hear it all the time out our mouths. So then when they use that term, we get upset? When Imus "talks street" as someone said to me, they don't understand why we're upset. They are confused and rap, as the main driver of African-American identity in popular culture, has played a role in that.
