No More SoundScan Numbers? Rappers Sound Off About The Raid

And the mixtape drama continues. Despite what folks may think, it has been confirmed over and over gain that the arrest of DJ Drama and Cannon were mainly due to copyright infringement/bootlegging. Paying taxes on a bootlegged item does not and will not free you from still infringing. With that said, big industry businesses are starting to crack down on sites and media who formulate and post soundscan numbers--probably because numbers don't lie and companies can get fronted out.

Here's the exact statement SOHH received from a source from a well known urban music site:

"If you thought DJ Drama and the Aphillates Music Group were the only ones to feel the effect of the powers that be desperate attempt to put to bed the commercial viability of urban music entertainment well guess again. Your favorite website Urban Connects recently received a “cease and decease” notice (same day as the Aphillates raid mind you) from the legal department of VNU, parent company of Nielsen BroadCast Data Systems and Nielsen SoundScan. The issue at hand is the BDS and SoundScan numbers that are posted on this site. Because of this action we will, starting today, omit the BDS/SoundScan numbers from being posted in “chart format”…but best believe we will continue to be your source for analysis of this urban music landscape (on a business level) from the perspective of people that are of the culture."

Big businesses aint playin y'all.

Lil Wayne and DukeDaGod told MTV how they felt about all this mixtape drama. Wayne says these DJs need to smarten up, especially if they're cakin' up with these mixtapes. He said:

"It's a bad thing," Wayne said of the Aphilliates' arrests, "but you gotta play the game fair. If you don't play fair, all kind of things can happen. You gotta watch people like DJ Clue, watch people like DJ Khaled. They do it right."

But can Wayne really go bad on the mixtape DJs since they're the one who helped propel his career to what it is now? Speak on it...

But DukeDaGod of the Diplomats saud this is like D-Day in hip-jop. He told MTV:

"DJ Drama is like our favorite mixtape DJ," he said. "Everybody loves Drama. It's crazy. It's like it's in your own backyard when it comes to Drama. He helps a lot of artists out. It's kinda messed up. I think they're trying to make hip-hop illegal or something. They're trying to make too many regulations on it. This is one of the worst days ever I can remember in hip-hop. I remember when Biggie got shot, when Pac got shot, it was crazy, but this right here is bad because it could determine the future of our music."

I guess we know whose side he's on.
