Yet Another Attempt By BET To Step Their Game Up

Posted on June 28, 2006 3:57 AM

Aiight peoples. Last night the BET Awards went down at the Shrine Auditorium and Hip-Hop and Black Hollywood was in full effect....usually.

Last year's show, hosted by Will and Jada, was hands down the best BET Awards show to date. And I see that this year they still couldn't top it. Y'all know the whole "Live" thing is not always a good mesh for the BET folks. But through the mess ups, technical dificulties, and lack of censoring, they still pulled off an aiight show.

Pre-Show

The pre-show was WHACK to say the least. That pic up there should tell you a whole lot. Clearly they purposely put the worst acts out in the pre-show instead of in the show. Shit was horrible. As much of a Latoya Luckett fan that I am, chick needs to go back on hiatus and work some vocal lessons out. Or just take notes on her ex/current friend Beyonce on how to work it out. Performing live is not her forte right now. Gon ahead and put that bug in ya girl's ear, Slim.

Cherish, Three 6 Mafia, and Chamillionaire sounded and looked straight foolish. Sadly enough, DFB were the best ones out there.

As for the rest of the highlights...things did get a lil interesting.

The Show

B kicked it off in "Work It Out" mode with the curly fro and mini skirt/bra outfit. This opening performance with "Deja Vu" was hot -- probably BET's best move of the night besides scheduling Prince as the closer. Hov of course came out in the middle of the song to spit his verses and slap Beyonce's ass a couple times. B wrapped up the performance with convulsions all on the floor and everything. Yup... This performance basically showed the R&B/Pop game who really has this shit on lock. Them other chicks aint touching B. I was hoping host D. Wayans' non-comedic self wouldn't ruin the flow...

And all that hope was definitely lost. The crowd wan't feeling him and I for damn sure wasn't either.

A Good Times reunion? Now that's wassup! JJ, Thelma and Michael took the stage to do a scene reminiscent of the show from over 15 years ago. Then surprise, surprise... The ever so fabulous Janet Jackson took the stage to say wassup to everybody from her Penny days. Now that's a bad b*tch.

T.I.'s performance was pretty hot. I couldn't tell if he did this "What You Know" performance mostly in semi-accapella on purpose or what... but it was still tight. Then later on Diddy let everybody know Tip still held it down even with technical difficulties.

So Kanye came to the stage to announce Jamie Foxx's performance and y'all know he was mad there was a teleprompter. But he didn't trip. Jamie's performance was pretty good. He did bring the on-stage-holy-ghost-having Fantasia out though to do "DJ Play Another Love Song." Honestly, I think she messed up the song with all that damn hollering. Nevertheless, they did shock the crowd by gettin real heated with each other on stage:

Damn.

Now we all know Mary is not the greatest live vocalist. But she did aiight tonight. Her look was on point and so was her singing, relatively speaking. And she made sure to spit her verse on "Enough Cryin" hard as she could. That's probably going to be the crowd fave of the night judging by how crunk everybody was in the audience.

joc-b.jpg

Young Joc and Diddy pissed me off by just standing on stage and doing the "It's Goin Down" dance for the whole performance -- lookin like Tom Cruise. They really should have kept that performance.

busta2-b.jpg

Bussa Bus definitely wrecked it with his set. Hands down the best male performance of the night. And yes, he was better than Chris Brown. For "I Love My Chick" he brought out Kelis and Will.I.Am. MJB, Papoose, and all other 300 peole on "Touch It Remix" came out to perform that joint. Very hype, very nice. And surprise surpise... Busta brought out that boy Eminem to spit a verse at the end.

Crowd loved it of course.

chaka2-bb.jpg

Stevie Wonder, Yolanda Adams, India.Arie and Prince just about closed out the night with a tight performance in Chaka Khan's honor by doing a melody of her songs. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award. And of course Chaka came out to show all these lil R&B girls what true sangin' sounds like.

My overall take on the show? Could have been better, but it doesn't rank that high on the whackness scale. Good attempt BET. A solid 4 stars on the SOHH Fabulous scales. (Would have been 4.5 if it wasn't for that damn pre-show. Would have been 5 if Whitney would have come out to KILL IT with Chaka on "I'm Every Woman".) Speak on it fam...
