Hip-Hop's 24-Hr Rap-A-Thon Returns.. And Steps It Up A Notch For The Second Time Around!

Posted on April 7, 2008 1:00 PM

So it's officially going down!

Since last year's 24 Hour Rap-A-Thon was such a success, they're bringing it back a second year!! Mark the date-- MAY 3rd!!!

Held last year at Harlem's Hip Hop Culture Center, the 24 Rap-A-Thon (kicked off by DJ Kool Herc) was an event that showcased the rhyming skills of over 100 emcees rhyming in teams for designated periods of time-- WITHOUT any derogatory language (in other words, save the b*tches and n*ggas for your demo tape).

But they had to step their game up this year, right?
Instead of going on for 24 hours... THEY'RE GOING FOR 25... WHAAATT?!

Some of my peeps actually took part in last year's event, including Kween Ka$h (as I previously mentioned), rapper/actor John O. and my dude Priest Forever, the DJ for Equilibrium Radio (where you can listen to me every Wednesday from 4-6pm.)

For those of y'all who didn't go to last year's event, I got some footage of y'all.

I like this clip right here of Priest and another Spanish speaking emcee rhyming together because it shows how quick and insightful you have to be with the rhymes:

There's one more thing I forgot to mention about this year's Rap A Thon... (hope y'all know how to Electric Slide. Why?)

In addition to the 25 Hour Rap-A-Thon, the Hip Hop Culture Center will be shutting down 124th Street and Frederick Douglass Ave. for the biggest Electric Slide Event EVER! All you have to do is bring a can a food, and you're in (the cans will be sent to a need village in Haiti).

And you know how it goes down when Black folk get together to do the Electric Slide-- and yes, Breezy will DEFINITELY be up in the spot doing the damn thing!

Personally, I think this is a good event for Hip-Hop, it's a chance to witness some of the untapped talent that lies within these seven boroughs (and beyond), and everyone's there for a common purpose. Plus, I've been to the Hip Hop Culture Center and it's a dope spot; when you walk through there are huge photos (some mounted and some hung from the ceilings) of pioneers such as Rakim, Biz Markie, Kool Herc, Cold Crush Brothers, and Slick Rick, to name a few. It makes you feel like Hip-Hop is not just a fad of great music, it's an era of Black History that will never be forgotten.

Before I forget-- the Rap-A-Thon auditions are open to ALL emcees. If you can spit for 90 seconds straight (no cursing), come down to the auditions at the Hip Hop Culture Center (125th Street and St. Nicholas Ave, on the 2nd Floor of the Magic Johnson Theatre) on April 8th, 10th, 14th, 18th, and 21st.
