Are You Googlin' Teyana? Gettin' Loose With Lil' Mama? Keep It Real!

Posted on April 8, 2008 9:00 AM

Wassup y’all!
You know I’m all about the females putting it down in this industry, but one thing I didn’t touch on during Woman’s Herstory Month were the little women holding it down! So today, y’all get a double dose of young, fresh and new.

Teyana Taylor first came into my stream of conscious because I heard this chick was signed to Star Trak. Okay, I can see that. She’s cute, a funky dressier, and her voice is a bit questionnable– looked like ya boy Pharrell wised up and traded in Kelis for a newer model.

Then when I heard this chick dubbed herself “The Princess of Harlem”, honestly, I rolled my eyes a few times. I'm up there all the time, NOT ONCE have I seen this chick on 125th street copping her some Dunks at Jimmy Jazz or Ballers (nor have I saw Young B, for that matter).

But then... I heard that song. You know the one. The one where she sounds like the black Anna Nicole Smith. “Google Me, Baby!”
Maybe it was her confidence. Maybe it was the Jazze-Phizzle Produc- shizzle that got me. Some songs are just that damn catchy that they get me (read: The "Duffle Bag Boy" effect). You know I'm not the only one.

Yes, I know she reminds you of Mr. T’s granddaughter in that one. But you know what? This chick made her way onto my MP3. Sue me.

Now, ever since Lil’ Mama came out, I’ve had a love-hate relationship with her. Admittedly, I got my lip gloss poppin’, a bit (and frankly, any female who says they weren’t feeling this joint even a smidgen of a lil’ bit is L Y I N G.) I hated the “G-Slide” with a passion and, although I think it was time she tried to get her grown-woman on, didn’t care much for her re-enacting Janet/MJJ videos with Chris Brown (“Shorty, Get Loose!”) But maybe's there's hope for her...

Okay, okay. Obviously she likes working with people who have absolutely NO TALENT whatsoever. But I got faith in Lil’ Mama. Compared to past interviews that I’ve seen her do, she’s grown up a lot. I can dig her trying to be the “Voice of The Young People”, but I keep wondering when this rumored “hard” Lil’ Mama that was apparently tearing up emcees like 3-4 years ago (yes, I know, hard to believe, but I’ve heard this from more than one reliable source, go figure)

My question for the day is, what do y’all think of Teyana and Lil’ Mama? How would you classify them? Do you listen to them? Are they setting a good example for young girls? Speak on it...

  • In an article I wrote for Hip-hop.net, I note how Lil' Mama's success with the youth is one of the 8 things that could help Hip hop:

" Now, I know it sounds silly, being that she, for the moment, has proven to be little more than a pop-rap novelty. But her importance lies in what she represents for the children. Lil’ Mama, and her monster, base thumping High School anthem “Lip Gloss,” is more of a throwback to old school boom bap than most would like to acknowledge. Fun, good-spirited rhyming over a hard core, stripped down beat? Come on? If it had been anyone else, a boy perhaps rapping about his sneakers, we’d be singing his praises. And above all, she’s pretty damn nice with hers. Could you imagine Hurricane Chris, Lil’ Boosie or Soulja Boy ciphering for the 2007 B.E.T. awards? I doubt it."

She's a lot better than people give her credit for. I think there's a lot of sexism involved in how people feel about her, which is sad in the year 2008. Whenever someone's critique of an artist begins with "She looks like a..." you know you're in for a bucket load of bullshit.

  • First off Teyana is NOT cute BUT she does have some great looking titties so they kinda cancel each other out lol. Anyway I haven't heard much shit from her, but Google Me is straight & her titties alone will make me check for her lol. Lil Mama seems to be able to spit which is a plus and she was able to come back from being a sure fire one hit wonder. Now she's looking 2 hit wonder dead in the face, but who knows. Regardless I think both are good for young girls now unlike Lil Kim and Foxy Brown were for the young girls of my generation lol.

  • @ Fiyah--
Ok, Kev Kelly, I see you talkin' bout Teyana's Google-Mees! LOL ha ha

    @ Bee Bee--
GIRRL u had me cracking up with that one! I could see the Queens voguing and freezing to that in the club (no disrespect, I don't discriminate against anyone)

    @ Richard Corey--
That's a pretty good argument you bring up... except for the fact that Soulja Boy rhymed about his "Bathing Apes" in that YOUUUUU song and I hated it. But yeah, had this been 2000 and Bow Wow came out with "my sneakers are fresh, my sneakers are live", these young cats would've ate it up.

  • T. Taylor is being "Googled" by some chick named Ti-Ti. Lil' Mama is talented but Jive keeps trying to push her into the wrong lane which will ultimately lead to her destruction.
