The Wire Season 5-09: "How My Hair Look, Mike?"-- Why I Say Snoop Went Out Like a Lady

Posted on March 3, 2008 9:00 AM

I *SWEAR* I watched this scene, like, four times, just trying to believe that THIS was gonna be the last time I'd hear that gruffy drawl on the series. But, alas...

I will touch base on this scene in detail on the next page, but first, we gotta get into WHY this happened in the first place.

And briefly, in a nutshell... the sh*t went down. Freamon's hard work finally paid off, and Sydnor and the rest of the crew catch the Stansfield Organization dirrrrrrrrrrty. Altogether, those n*ggas had enough dope worth an estimated $16 Million worth of dope. Daaaaaaaaaaaamn.

Did y'all see the look on Bunk's face when he finally got Chris Partlow? I thought the man was gonna nut in his drawers or something...

You know what I thought was interesting about this episode? Everyone started singing like f*cking canaries, in one way, shape or form.

Lester, of course, has to fess up to Deputy Daniels about what's been going on under his nose, which at first, he's thrilled about... until an unexpected visitor (Kima) snitches tells him the truth about the Homeless Serial Killer and how it wound up linking to the entire Marlo Stanfield case. Damn. Do y'all think she did the right thing?

I thought the dialogue between her and Carver was pretty intense:

Kima: When you spoke up on Colicchio, how did it feel? Carver: Like sh*t. It was a forced move. He was on the bend for a long time. Kima: But you were okay with it? Carver: [shrugs]

I mean, give the girl some credit. At least she wasn't doing it to be spiteful. Imagine what would've happened had she not done so.

Another person who starts snitching is... yep... Clay Davis. Shheeeeeeeiiit. This muthaf*cka drops the dime on Levy, informing Freamon of his leak inside the courts and how he allows major kingpins early access to court documents. Dayum.

After all this good sh*t Freamon's sitting on, no wonder he wants go home and take a run at Shardene... drunk as hell. Unfortunately (or maybe, in the long run, it's fortunately) McNulty doesn't want to partake in the drinking.

Another important aspect of this episode is was the fact that while Gus brings in new eyes to double-check Templeton's credibility (and even goes and visits the wounded serviceman at the Veteran's Hospital to get his account of the PTSD-afflicted Marine's story), his Homeless Serial Killer story is being considered for a Pulitzer nomination. Damn. I'm really interested to see how the writers are going to sew up his storyline.

We also get to see Bubbs--excuse me, Reginald-- again, this time, he's celebrating the anniversary of his being clean. That's huge! At the NA meeting, he delivers an honest testimonial about a recent time where he almost backslided, and had no one to call to talk to (to which, a female in the audience responds, "you didn't call me, Bubbs, 'cause I woulda got up with you right quick!"). At the end of the day, though, he overcame his demon. I guess that strength allowed him to finally break his silence and share his pain over losing Sherrod. He was able to admit to himself that "ain't no shame in holding on to grief, as long as you make room for other things, too." I really hope that his sister can learn to trust him again. At first, I thought it was inhumane of her to have Bubbs confined to a basement like an animal, but in the long run, we have all had a family member who we've been torn between loving unconditionally, yet protecting ourselves (and/or our valuables). He even acknowledges this at the meeting, stating that he knew it was going to "take some time to get right with them".
Guess the writers are gonna let you go free after all, Bubbs.

Okay, now that I've gotten the other major points out of the way (oh yeah, did y'all peep Namond's lil' debating scene?) let's discuss the events leading up to Snoop's death... and the aftermath.

After the the crew gets bagged, they all sit in the holding cell discussing what went down. Leave it to that ig'nant ma'f-cka Cheese to acknowledge the fact that Mike could've possibly been the snitch that led to the takedown. This fact is further instigated by the mentioning of the fact that Mike (along with damn near everybody else) neglected to inform Marlo that Omar was calling him out, leading to the "my name is my name" tirade. I'm sorry, I couldn't buy this part. Usually I praise Jamie Hector, but he kept the same facial expression the entire time-- I couldn't believe he was honestly mad.
However, Partlow doesn't believe what they're saying about Mike.

Chris: Don't see the boy snitching. Marlo: Neither do I. But you willing to bet your future on that?

Did anyone peep Chris' face throughout ALL of his scenes? He looked TIRED. I mean, TIRED similar to how Omar looked in the last episode, as if his fight was fading fast. He don't have the heart to continue living the life they're living-- this was evident when he thought Omar was gonna come after his family. This is completely based on inferral of human nature, but I think deep down inside, he's kinda relieved that his sh*t is coming to an end.

After further talking and instigating (courtesy of Levy) Snoop's name is thrown up in the mix as a possible Canary, and there you have it. Personally, I think that Marlo played this sh*t out like duel-- pit them against each other, and figured hey, whoever's the last man standing is the last man standing. To make a long story short, Snoop rolls up on Mike and tells him that they have to do one last job 'cuz of the way ish went down-- and oh yeah-- "you ain't gotta bring your iron, 'cuz I got a new machine with scratched off numbers". FLASHING... LIIIIGHTS!! Time to cue Kanye West music. Obviously, Mike hears it too, 'cuz like he said-- they always taught him to get there early-- thus, stakes out the guy before the actual hit is supposed to go down.

So when Snoop comes to pick him up that evening (and at this point, I WANT TO KILL HER because she's riding around listening to "Bartender"), Mike knows the sh*t is a hoax.. and its even further thrown into his face when his "iron" is supposedly in the truck. He makes her pull over in an alleyway, and just like that, he pulls out his piece-- a chess game well played, if you ask me.

I know everyone wants to talk about that statement, "you was never one of us, and you never will be."
I talked to a friend, and he thought that was Snoop's way of telling Mike to fuck off.
Personally, I disagree. I feel like she was just stating the obvious. Snoop, Chris, and Marlo are the Treacherous Three for a reason– they have no heart (although Chris may be the most RATIONAL THINKER of the trio). Mike has a heart (or at the least, a conscious). He asks questions as to why this one got to get popped and what not– showing a sign that he’s NOT ruthless and can’t shoot just anybody . I think the Butchie incident was more than ENOUGH proof that Snoop and Chris were cut from the opposite material of Mike’s cloth. I also take his insight to mean that he has more potential than just being someone's corner boy or muscle. If he wanted to, he could run his own organization because he has a rational mind. Little did he know that one day, his inquisitiveness would save his life.

Some of y’all say Snoop went out like a G.
I say, she went out like a real lady.

Why? Picture this. She came INTO the series doing her first hit on the back of a motorcycle wearing girl clothes, looking like a true ryde-or-die chick.

She goes out and her last words are “how my hair look?” I know dudes take pride in their appearance, but no one takes pride in how they look like women, no matter gay or straight, or if they look like Beyonce or Lil’ Weezy. The point is, I know that if I were in the game, and I KNEW I was about to get popped... that would probably be my last question, especially since MY hair is my pride. I’d want everyone to remember me as being fly. And technically, Mike affirms Snoop's last-minute vanity/return to her femme roots, by saying, “you look good, girl”... before capping that ass.

In a twisted way... I think that was the writers' way of giving Snoop a dignified death. To simply write her off as going out in a shoot-out would've been corny, don't you think?

The saddest thing about this episode was that Mike, Dukie and Bug now have to split. This part reaaaaally got to me. Mike's really becoming a man before his time, and that frightens me. He was trying to hold it together so strongly for his friend and brother, but you knew he wanted to break down. You KNOW he remembered the incident with the pee balloons that Dukie recountered. QUESTION: Should Dukie have rolled with Mike? I just hope and pray that Dukie will be smart and not turn to the needle, like the Junkman.

Aaaah. Only one more. What are y'all looking forward to for the series finale? I really want to see if McNulty kills himself...

The scene with Mike and Snoop was classic! What makes this show good is they know how to make staments without words. . .when Lester looked at Marlo and then his clock without words shows the genius of this shows writers.
Again,I say- this is the greatset show of this decade.

At the end of the day its going to be her fault Marlo Standfield is back on the streets. Yeah it was fucked up cops were wasting time guarding the homeless but the ends justify the means. I think the Mayor might cover it up though because he was going off in the previews for the next episode. Mike not remember the piss balloons was tragic. I don't understand why he didn't just go with Bug to live in PG. He can't stay in B-More Marlo and nem will kill him.

He never did anything horrible to make him have the life that he has. I know he could have found a better place to live than with them junk workers. It was nice to see Naymond again even though his character should have had the hard life that Randy and Duquan are having. I didn’t like how Mike abandons Duquan even though he had to.

I didn;t look at it from the point of maybe he was actually bigger than what they were, like cut out to be a kingpin not a corner boy. The part where Snoop tells him he always was a smart nga plays into that perfectly. I'm just pissed they aren't putting the final episode ON DEMAN so now i gotta wait until next Sunday with all the other scrubs! hahahah...

  • This is the best television show ever produced. The look on Snoop's face when Michael pulled out on her was hall of fame material. That was some of the best writing ever on The Wire. Michael pulls the hammer back, Snoop smirks and looks at herself in the rearview...."How my hair look Mike?" This line just added another layer of depth to her character. Its easy to forget that Snoop is a woman, but the writers gave her a feminine instinct while she stared death in the face. But she took her death like a man. She never tried to talk her way out of it, unlike Stringer Bell, Prop Joe, Hungry Man, etc. When Mike pulled out on her she just nodded and admitted that he was a sharp young dude, and that he got the drop on her. No fessing, no crying, no explaining. My prediction, Marlo goes free due to the illegal wiretap, but Mike and/or Dukie air his ass out. Cheese snitches, Chris and Monk get Jetsons sentences, Mcnulty, Freemon and Levy go to jail, Carcetti decides to cover up the homeless scam, but he makes sure that Daniells career is over.

Hell naw, Mike hired him to do it. That was his play at the crown. I think this shit gonna end with Mike taking hold of the crown and bein the new kingpin while Marlo and Avon stay in jail....

Either way, I'm gonna miss the fuck outta this show. No homo, it might bring tears to my eyes hearing that final music come on. Fuck HBO for not keeping this shit going. They should make a spinoff of this shit with almost all the same characters and just give it a different name...

  • The Late Editions episode was great on so many levels.
Breezy.. I have to disagree with U. Jaime Hector played that jail scene perfectly. U have to remember Marlo is a sociopath. He HATES to talk period; hates to communicate. But, he had no choice once he heard Omar was clowning him and no one told him. That was the best emotion ever from Marlo. That is the max U will ever get from him. His eyes said it all & the crew got the message right quick. I feel for Chris in a way. I know he's a stone-cold killer; but, I feel his pain in having to deal with his situation & his concern for Mike in a way. Snoop - I think she knew that she was going when Mike cocked the gun after telling him that he wasn't one of them. She went out like a soldier. Mike - I feel for him. Growing up so fast. That street life is no joke and his good memories are gone. But, he's a survivor & got good street smarts. He'll make it. Dukie - I pray he don't become a junkie. He has such lack of self-esteem & self-confidence. He couldn't see himself in a better situation. Kima - I understand why she told on McNulty. But, I felt like she should have waited. Bunk - I was happy for him. Something went his way for a change. I feel for Gus. I have a feeling something will go wrong for him in the last episode. He's a good guy; but, the good ole boys LOVES Scott. Clay Evans - shiiiittttt. He is too funny. I hope Freemon will give him a break & leave him alone. Free got enough info from Clay already. McMulty - I think he will die. He can't cope no more. I hope Daniels will be okay and the female attorney. I forgot her name. Otherwise, great episode.

  • This episode was sick. I've followed this show since it first aired.

    Avon was my nigga.
    Stringer was my nigga.
    Weebay was my nigga.
    Omar was my nigga.
    Bodie was my nigga.

To see the show end hurts on some real shit. I've gotten so used too having quality shows that losing this one is a blow.

First it was the Sopranos now this.

The Wire is the most honest show on television. It shows a part of life that niggas in the hood know all too well, and a part that we dont know on the law side. It shows how similar both sides really are in the sense that we'll do anything to get what we after and how brutal that can get. How easilly murders can happen, how corrupted po po can be, how honest they can be, how passionate about the job they can be.

I'm from the streets and I want to see Marlo go down. If he gets off I'd be pissed because he's done too much. He's the worst kind of nigga, for that I hate him... but also for that I respect him like a muthafucka! He had a good run, but he was no Avon or Stringer.

This show is a classic and will be missed by me dearly. Hell I almost cried on some real shit reading this blog and the posts. Snoop went out on some real shit, in a real way. Not every shooter goes out in a shootout. Most go out just like that. Just like Omar. Slipping.

  • The wire is the best show to come out in the last (DECADE) It's so sad that when we have such minority cast it' ends!!!!! The wire has white collars talking and exposing urban cities. To close to home!!!!!!!! I met majority of the cast All-Star weekend and Bunk indirectly said that Mc Nulty would kill himself. His words. " I saw him play Roulette, like a true fan I am I said Bunk not calling him by his real name Mr. Pierce, we shook hands and Isaid don't kill Mc Nulty and he said shit "He gone kill himself". At that point I didn't get the hint until reading the blog. I think the wire is finally over on HBO but some Network will try and buy the rights but it won't be the same.

  • Marlo is really not that different from Avon. They're both obsessed about maintaining their territory and reputation, no matter what the cost may be. Neither one of them really knows anything outside of west Baltimore. They're the heads of their organizations basically because they're the toughest and they inspire the most fear. The only real difference is that Marlo surrounds himself with only muscle, while Avon had a criminal genius on his team in Stringer. Stringer showed Avon all the different angles of the game and how to clean their money, use politicians, avoid police investigations, and eventually how to insulate themselves from the street. The only person Marlo has to counsil him about these parts of the game is a crooked ass lawyer who gets deep in Marlo's pocket whether he goes the jail or not. Because of Stringer, the Barksdale crew had a longer run and made more money than Marlo. But as a boss, I think Marlo is more effective than Avon, simply because he has less conscious. Avon respected the Sunday ceasefire and didn't believe in killing women. Marlo is a true sociopath and feels absolutely nothing about killing. Only reason Marlo fell quicker than Avon is because nobody in his crew had knowledge outside of the street.

  • @ Myspace Dimension:

Now, if the writers did that (give Slim Charles a spin-off series)... THAT WOULD BE SOME ISH WORTH WATCHING... or would it be? They'd have to come up with completely different and more clever plots... and to mix it up a bit... take it out of B-More, like you suggested...

    What do y'all think?

  • Good points Breezy. You had a word choice error though, you meant that Mike has conscience, not a "conscious." other than that, good stuff. i've been wondering about that "you never were one of us" line, too, and that part with Dukie and Mike was so sad.

  • I can't believe this is the end but on a positive note America has finally got a glimpse of what the real America looks like for the lil boys and girls in the ghetto all over the nation and its about damn time!!! I Will Miss U Wire
I was a little disappointed about this final season and how it was taking shape until last night, they set it off and it was classic Wire style, Mike is my lil heart, a young man who been thru hell with so much wisdom and heart and compassion who had to do what he had to take care of him and his little brother and even his homeboy. I cried on that scene with him Bug and Duk No matter what happens that is a character that touched me. Dukie might fall off but he is very smart and will see the light eventually, Kima how the fuck, after all these years of holdin it down you go and pull some bitch shit and then that dumb bitch had the nerve to say Fuck Mcnulty and Fuck Marlo if you real murder police and you know Marlo is responsible for all them damn murders and u mad 4 what, McNulty I know you gonna pay 4 it but your heart was in the right place and u got good results. Bunk is gonna always be Bunk, Freamon is gonna always be Freamon. Daniels will always be Daniels. Snoop a straight G begining to end, Chris i think he is tired too good point. Marlo, Cheese, Munk, all them niggas bitches. When you think about were the show started with Avon now that was a real smart, cold ass nigga but one that you never saw as a bitch and now ending with Marlo he gotta fall just gotta. Shout Out to all the real niggas that made the Wire the shit OMAR, Wee Bay, Stringer, Deangelo, Avon, Bodie, Wallace, and all the lil niggas Namond, Randy, lil dude jackn cars,Dukie, Mike and all the rest. I will savor that last episode, then I will be in mourning for a while, we will never see TV like this again.

-Damn shame when society comes to a point where someone like, Omar, can be considered a real nigga. I mean, FUCK- he's a fuckin FAG! Does that make him any less of a man!? -HELL YES IT DOES! I was raised in the muthafuckin streets seeing cats get jacked, jumped, and shot- but, homos got NO LOVE. They didn't strike fear into anybody's heart, and, they certainly didn't run shit. Don't get it twisted- I'm not homophobic to the point of being an out-n-out bigot against gay folks, but, to be idolizing a character such as "Omar" is just down right disgusting to me. He may have been portrayed as an ethics-bound killer (how oxymoronic), but the only thing "G" about him was his sexuality. Fuck that.

  • In response to "noluvforhomothugs", I have to say I respect your opinion and definetly understand where your coming from I know that as a man it is hard for you to picture to men in that manner; however many thugs all over the world are homosexual, many of which you may have known that got mad respect in da street probably had more goin on behind closed doors than you thought, "the down low" does exist and as a woman it scares me.And we wont even get into what "THUGS" do in jail!! All I'm sayin is Snoop's sexuality I'm sure doesn't bother you at all and for me it was a bit much but that is the reality of society in 2008. The Wire as gripping and real as it was is still TV, entertainment and that is the reason the character Omar had many dimensions to him and was very intriguing and will always be a fan favorite, no matter what you say. I love Omar's character and always will see him as my nigga, sorry if that offends you but it is what it is.
