Midweek Madness: Lupe Fiasco-- "Hip Hop Saved My Life", and apparently, Charlie Murphy Invented Back-pack Rap!

Posted on March 19, 2008 9:00 AM

IT'S A BACKPACK RAPPER WEDNESDAY CELEBRATION, BITCHES!!

We've been spinning this joint for a minute on Equilibrium Radio (which airs TODAY from 4-6pm, stream it here at www.whcr.org if you don't live in Harlem), so when I saw that Buckshot finally released a video for it, I had to check it out.
I've been down with Buckshot since that "Two Turntables and a Mic" joint way back when, so I had to show him some love on Talkin' Videos.

The video's cool, nothing spectacular, just meant as a vehicle for the track... but Charlie Murphy smackin' n*ggas up? Sheeeeiiit.... that's what every music video is missing these days, lol.
Check the vid to see how it breaks it down:

"My name is Charlie! Shoulda 'ducked down', b*tch!"

I did not want to do it.
I did not, DID NOT want to do it.

However, my cohorts have told me that I need to get over Lupe Fiasco's disastrous, came-out-of-his-face faux pas at last year's VH1 Hip-Hop Honors.... so.... sigh...
I'm extending my olive branch by way of actually viewing this video.

I had to laugh at the video's ironic title ("Hip Hop Saved My Life") when reminscing upon all that crazy talk he said about not ever listening to ATCQ. Yeah, I'm so sure. And it's not even the FACT that he made that claim..... wait... I'm about to go off on it again...
ENOUGH! I SAID I WAS DONE WITH THE ISSUE!

*** I just want to let everyone know that at this point, I went into a full-on Lupe blast. BUT, like I said, I'm over it, so the only way to truly stick to that was to delete what I wrote. However, if you're still interested in what I was GOING to say, holla at me.***

You did good, Lu.
I really can't hate on this one at all. The video clearly illustrates the tale of a "D-boy with a b-boy flow" that you poignantly rhyme about in the song, and it didn't come off as very "hustle-to-flow" ish, and not oversensationalizing the situation. I'm digging it. Nikki Jean's vocals are also on point, she doesn't overwhelmed the track at all. Only change I would've made is to have her play the babymama WHILE singing the hook, 'cuz indirectly, her life would've been saved, too.

I'm not co-signing sh*t, but...maybe I should go download The Cool now....

What do y'all think? Now I'm curious-- is anyone out there reading this blog actually ROCKING a backpack? And here's food for thought: Do y'all think backpack rappers have better lyrical content than their contemporaries? How about the conscious rapper vs. the backpacker. What distinguishes the two, BESIDES the actual accessory?

Holla @ me about it in the Comments or: Breezylovesyababy@gmail.com

  • Y'know, that whole ATCQ thing really didn't bother me too much. Lupe is a cold rapper, period. I didn't watch the video too hard, but The Cool is the first album I actually paid for since last summer.

And do I wear a backpack? Only to class.

  • you blast a man for having a opinion, which with your blog you give your opinion each and every day, whats "backpack rap" anyway?

  • @ Rayne215--

I wasn't blasting Lupe for his opinions, I was blasting him for his negligence & indifference towards learning the rhymes of a group he was supposed to be paying homage to, then flipping it off saying that he never listened to the group when OBVIOUSLY his whole style is influenced by them. That's like Trina going on stage flubbing lyrics to a Lil' Kim tribute, then claiming that she never listened to Kim in the first place.
BUT LIKE I SAID-- This is an overbeaten horse.

And I'm still trying to figure out the backpack rapper thing. When Ye first came out, he rocked a backpack, but now he doesn't... is he no longer a backpack rapper? Is he conscious? It's a lil' fuzzy, I'll admit...

  • Yea Lupe redeemed himself by putting out quality shit. So I guess he can get a pass on his ATCQ fuck up.

The only difference btwn the backpacker & concious rappers are their fans. A concious rapper fan would more than likely considers themself to be more of an intellectual individual. The backpacker fan would be more of a free spirited hippie type.

  • damn im so tired of niggas bitching cuz a nigga said he aint listen 2 the tribe called quest album, who gives a fuck, everybody didnt here it, i didnt. im from the midwest like he is. see being from the midwest we got a lot of options of music cuz we in the middle. most of midwesterns relate to our own and the south more cuz we're so close. we r very similar cuz most midwesterns r country 2. a lot of us grew up on bone thugs, twista, do or die, crucial conflict, and the south like ugk, 8ball&mjg,outkast,goodie mobb. we listen 2 east coast and west coast 2. it just baffles me that niggas from the eastcoast think if they grew up on it then everybody should have grown up on its and thats just not the case and it aint fair cuz if u notice they r the ones who feel offended. yall some grown ass men, get his dick out chall mouth{that goes 4 sohh too}

  • Damn, Flashlight 14 speaking truth. Honestly, I'm 30, so I was smart enough to chose to listen to Midnight Marauders. In the Yo MTV Raps days you couldn't get enough, true. I'm not from the midwest or the eastcoast, I was born and raised 20 years in Nairobi, Kenya. I am a human hip hop encyclopeadia(sp) but I don't think these younger cats have to have listened to Tip n' them. Shit, until I read responses I ain't figure out who ATCQ was, I thought DAMN they must be some niggas from pre-Full Force days. I find it jah suspect that my man listened to so much NWA but no tribe, but that might have been a choice. And fuck a New Yorker that doesn't like this next statement, "NWA were bigger, better, and got way more press than ATCQ."

  • Aiiiighty Now. Lupe Is Sick. If He Listened To A.T.C.Q Or Not, He Got Bars. Point, Blank, Period. . .

Anyway, Back Pack vs. Conscious. Same Thing To Me. It's Just Lyrical Rap. I'd Place Them In The Same Category. . .

    I'm A Lyricist. To Me, "Rappers" SUCK! Shawty Lo = Rapper, Souljah Boy = Rapper / / Jay-Z = Lyricist, Common = Lyricist. . .

You See Where I'm Goin'? I Think Rap Sucks Now. It's All Bullshit & No Matter How Many Times They Say They're "New" & A "Fresh Breath Of Air"; They're Not. . .

We Need More Lyricists. But We Really Need More REAL PRODUCERS To Bring The Lyrics Out Of These Cats. Real, Just Blaze, Pharrell, Chase N. Cashe & Hit-Boy, D.A (Look Them Up) Type-A-Shit. The Game Is Lackin' GOOD INSTRUMENTALS. Like INSTRUMENT-als. Everything Is So Dancy Now. . .

I'm Here To Change That... With My Backpack On Tight. . .

  • Lupe of no one else has to like or even recognize ATCQ...but Lupe fucked up when he agreed to participate in show that was celebrating and honoring their contribution to hiphop when he didn't even know who they were, or have enough respect for them to do his homework before attempting to perform one of their classic songs in honor of them.

It is what it is and everyone has since moved on. But his new joint is solid. There is no denying Lupe's lyrical ability. He's a good artist.

  • I dont know what your fixation on labels are but Lupe as well as EVERYONE out there are artists. Fuck the whole labelling shyt. They bring music to the fans, thats it. Whether he is a "backpack" rapper or a "conscious" one, he is an artist first. And as for A Tribe Called Quest, (i hate that ATCQ acronym shit) I do think he fudged up the lyrics and sure you can knock him for that, but you dont know the situation before the perfomance. He still shouldnt have done it though. And i cant possibly believe that he hasnt heard of tribe called quest, everyone in their right mind has. Listening to them is a different story. I knew vivrant thing by Q-tip before i had really sat and listened to tribe called quest. I can say his [lupe] style does emulate them but you cant say his whole swag is based on them alone. Use some common sense. why all your panties in a bunch still. You cant knock someone for one mistake. I mean look at kanye he still making them as we speak...
