Midweek Madness: Gnarls Barkley-- "Run"

Posted on March 5, 2008 9:00 AM

Yes, this video well-deserves to be blogged under the title "Midweek Madness".

When I first heard this song, I thought it was some weird, subliminial message Gnarls Barkley was sending out to any delusion child that STILL wishes to visit the Neverland Ranch.. so I thought that the video treatment would naturally feature a bunch of lil' kids running away from some ghastly figure holding a baby-sized figure covered in a blankie.

How foolish of me.

Just something really quick to get your morning started. I love this track-- when I'm listening to it, I feel like I'm on Mars, dancing in a Martian discotecque... after doing quualudes with Lindsay Lohan in the unisex bathroom, ha ha ha. In addition, I'm feeling the whole "Soul Train in Outer Space" vibe going on with this one... but Justin Timberlake as the white, hip-hop wannabe Don Cornelius? Uhhh....

Kinda reminds me of when Ryan Phillippe did the opening for Andre3000's "Hey Ya".

WHY??

ANYWAY... Cee-Lo, you did it again!

Let's just take a quick tally y'all.. this video doesn't fit the type of what I'm about to write because 1) Gnarls Barkley (and Cee-Lo, nonetheless) was ALWAYS on the different side of the road and 2) the concept here is not that vague not to grasp, BUT....

we're in to 2008, Jay-Z, Kanye, Swizz, and now Gnarls Barkley have done videos that some may deem as "to the left", but, in my opinion, are just them attempting to stand on top of the box and redefine the script. It's gone BEYOND abandoning video chicks, its getting to the point where *SOME* people claim they can't understand the video's concepts. Do y'all think rappers are now feeling the heat to step their video game up concptually, or this is just a fad that won't last, [even though a select few have been doing it FOR YEARS (read: Common, Talib, etc.. but you know what I'm getting at]... what seemingly unexpected rapper do you predict will crank out an artsy, avant-garde video next? Holla @ me.

  • Damn, sometimes it's best for people to keep their opinions to themselves. If it's not about what your think the video entails, don't comment. I am an excellent example by the way ;)

I thought the sound was very similar to their old material and the video was pretty crap actually.

It's not really showing that we have evolved to 2008 - video's are gettin' worse, however I think Kanye's videos for Stronger/Good Life were pretty amazing - as well as Jay-Z's 'Roc Boys' and a few other.

Nothing really stands out as excentric anymore, this video looks very lazy.
