Ladies, Stand in U.N.I.T.Y. For This Throwback: "WHO YOU CALLING A B*TCH?!"

Posted on March 13, 2008 9:00 AM

Wassup everybody---

Shame, shame, shame on me.
We're already 13 days into March and I have yet to acknowledge that it's WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH!

So it's definitely time to rep for the ladies. If you're a regular reader of this blog, then you know that immersing myself in quality hip-hop from the ladies is my passion, and I am constantly disturbed with the current state of hip-hop as it relates to females, artists or not. That being said, I'm gonna try and do a Femcee Throwback for every Thursday of this month. (If you have ANY requests, please e-mail me at Breezylovesyababy@gmail.com)

Aight, so let's get started with the first one. I remember when this video first premeried at the end of an episode of Living Single, and though I was a fan of the Queen before, this really did it for me.

U.N.I.T.Y., ya gotta let 'em know!

"Instinct leads me to another flow/everytime I hear man call a girl a bitch or a hoe..."

See, what I love about this song and video is that not only is Queen Latifah wicked with the flow, she's uplifting the females as well. We didn't have to accept eptithets as "bitches" and "hos", and we certainly didn't have to let men disrespect us. For me, this song represents having pride not only in being a woman but also in being a strong individual thinker (check the third verse... she's not letting the dudes OR the girls off the hook for this one).

And yes, what's crazy is that in today's world, people still associate the word "bitch" with a woman who's strong, assertive and aggressive. WHY SHE GOTTA BE ALL THAT FOR?! I know I can relate to that one, because I always speak my mind, and have been slammed with that tag a time or few. Even on this blog I get called out for my unapologetic views at times. But what are we gonna do, ladies? Fit the stereotype of what a "proper" woman should be? Trust me, the "seen and not heard" mentality still goes on today.

So, as I watched this video again, I found myself getting hyped all over again like when I first saw it. Finally, a sista was feeling the frustrations I had growing up and said, "you know what? Eff all that. Continue to hold your own." I also really love the way Latifah carries herself in the video-- truly like she's a statesque queen, let no man put asunder (check 2:39 for example).

And (for the young'ns who may not be in the know), the music industry was also feeling her "black reign". The song brought her the 1994 Grammy for Best Solo Rap Performance.

I'm going to end off today's post by letting you know that while watching this video to blog it, I watched it along with my two-year-old niece. Of course, she's too young to understand the meaning of the song (and trust, she will be taught in due time), but I hope that somehow, she subsconciously absorbed the strength of the track. She did turn to me when it was over and say, "I like song", when the video ended, so here's hoping.

Ladies (and fellas, too, I'm not excluding y'all) let me know how y'all felt when you first saw this video. Peace be with y'all today.

P.S. Shout out to Vinnie from Naughty By Nature for playing the bad guy in this vid! Ha ha!
