Throwback Thursday: Digable Planets-- "Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat)"

Posted on February 21, 2008 9:00 AM

"Yeah I'm thick like dat/I stack like dat/I'm down like dat/I'm black like dat"-- Ladybug Mecca

Word.

What up y'all. I know this week's Throwback will be felt by TRUE HIP-HOP HEADS.
Tell me this video doesn't put you in the zone as soon as the bass hits.

And for the young'ns... click the next page, 'cuz I'm about to put y'all up on a lil' history.
This track is more than just a heavily sampled song for television songs.

Butterfly, Doodlebug and Ladybug Mecca were definitely ahead of their time, blending jazz and hip-hop rhythms to aid their futuristic, yet hippie-esque flows. The hip-hop community as well as the mainstream took notice: not only did this song peak at #1 on the Billboard Hot Rap Tracks in '93, the group won the Best Rap Performance Grammy by a Duo or Group for this joint in 1994.

Unfortunately, the group suffered from personal struggles as well as the dreaded sophomore album slump, leading to their breakup. However, each of the members have released solo joints and rejoined as a group in 2005 (I'm definitely feeling alot of Ladybug's tracks).

But this joint right here is a staple in my Top 10 Hip-Hop Cuts of All Time.

You know wanna know something? In a way, they were the predecessors to The Fugees. Truth be told, I'm sure they were heavily influenced by the Planets. Even more, Ladybug Mecca set the stage for Lauryn Hill and other femcees maintaining their place amongst their male groupmates, because you know her rhymes were fresh.

Show ya love for the Planets below. Hip-hop gained a classic with this one.

  • You know what? I thought this song was wack back then, but today I was wrong. This song wasn't wack it was trash. It stinks, but not as bad as Spider Pig's (aka SOHH Breezy . . .I bet she doesn't love me now like she says after all of her wack ass blogs) stank twat.

But really does anybody know what the fuck these tree hugging niggas was talking about. I hate songs like these because they always ruin my high. I think I might have to take a trip to 125th street in Harlem for poetry night at the Apollo to throw some frozen tomatoes at backpack ass rappers like these corny mother fuckers feature today.

  • Black History: Malcolm X died on this day in 1965, I wonder if SOHH will make note of this or if they will ignore this man's legacy.

  • Man, I had that CD, and if I can remember I had their 2nd CD too. There was a lot of songs that was on that CD that just put you in the groove. If I can find that CD today I would buy it. I need to download it or something. That was just one of those CD's that you can listen too over and over again. Especially when you are on a long trip somewhere. Good looking out. When I get my MP3 player tomorrow I will definitely look them up.
