The Wire Season 5-07: Someone's Being Taken For a Ride

Posted on February 18, 2008 9:00 AM

(Before I get into this, I just wanna state... AGAIN... that these The Wire blogs are NOT, I repeat, are NOT re-caps, they’re reactionary pieces based on what I took from the episode, meaning what caught MY attention during the viewing. You all are free to comment on things that I chose to either overlook or omit due to space. This is in response to the person that desperately felt the need to make a comment two weeks ago about me not “re-capping” this “professionally”, as say, hbo.com would.. well, duh, nigga. Do I work for HBO? They’re giving you a basic PLOT SUMMARY, and I’ve said that from DAY ONE that wasn’t what I was going to do. PAY ATTENTION before you TRY to call me out on some sh*t I NEVER said I was gonna do. Thanks!)

Okay, the episode’s really called “Took”, which makes sense. Lots of people get taken for a ride.

Matter of fact, sheeeeeeeeeeiittt. B-More as a whole gets taken for a long one – y’all seen that opener didn’t you?

I know I didn’t post my reaction piece about Ep.6, but I’m pretty sure y’all watched it, and so y’all know exactly who’s photo McNumb Nuttz and Freak-mon bluetoothed, along with Jimmy now giving an actual voice to the “Homeless Serial Killer” via cell-phone... IN A CLOSET RIGHT NEXT TO THE WIRE TAP COMPUTER.

Everyone and their mama sees it and goes B E S E R K. Especially Carcetti .
What does he do? Tells Daniels to fix this sh*t, of course, and finally makes it rain on them hoes.

Is that good news or bad news for Baltimore PD?
Good for them, bad for McNulty...

And too, too, too bad for Bunk, who’s actually still doing police work, trying to connect links to Marlo the hard right way. You can’t help but feel his frustration when he’s asked to participate in this circus. F*CK THAT!

I liked the flipped back-and-forth scenes between the newsroom and the meeting with Deputy Daniels as both settings dealt with tackling the Homeless Serial Killer in each of their arenas, especially now that he has a face. It;s funny how the two people who are milking the hoax the most suddenly become thrust even further into the spotlight of it all: that f*cker Scott Templeton will not only be writing a first person account of his homeless encounters, but will be interviewed about his “street odyssey”, making him into a subject as well.

And McNulty? Well, as ironic as life could possibly turn out, is now getting all the manpower he can stand now– behind his case, including Greggs, who is once again plucked from her triple homicide case. I guess he’s feeling reaaaaally guilty, because to make reparations, this n*gga (well, I really shouldn’t call him that, but you know) goes and tells some poor hapless detective working a case with no ends being pushed his way that he will give him manpower to work HIS case, but disguise it as overtime work under the Serial Killer Fiasco.

And oh-oh! This happens not one... not two... but three times. THREE! Who the FUCK made this dude Robin Hood? Then has THE NERVE to run up to Freak-mon and say, “Lester! Get me outta this sh*t!”

All I know is, stars shine the brightest before they die. Temp and McNulty better get their sh*t together, because it’s already becoming slowly and steadily undone.

Yeah– you guessed it. Gus smells a rat. A rat named Templeton, just like in Charlotte’s Web. And he’s about to get exterminated.

Luckily, for The Baltimore Sun, they still have reporters that get the story the old-fashioned way.
I’m really interested to see how Fletcher will wind up writing his account of the homeless community, now that he’s got Bubbles under his wing. I believe what will wind up happening is Fletcher will pen a story specifically on Bubbs and his road to ex-junkie status.

I noticed that Baltimore’s insurgents and white-collar criminals have their own secret weapon: Billy Murphy, a reincarnate of Johnnie Cochran... and apparently JC’s spirit (not to mention Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s) crept up Clay Davis as well, because his day in court was something to be seen. Yep– he went out in all “If The Glove Don’t Fit, You Must Acquit” glory, and the jurors ate his sh*t up, hook, line and sinker. Sheeeeeeeiiiit, I thought I heard Mahalia Jackson sing in my ear singing "Joshua Fit The Battle of Jericho" at one point. I don’t know what had me rolling more, the fact that he was carrying a copy of Promethus Bound, or the fact that during his testimonial he dubbed that old woman’s ailment as “arthur-ritis”.
Pearlman is right... they don’t teach that sh*t in law school... but they should.

In honor of Clay Davis beating that case like a two dollar trick that owed him money, I thought I’d find this funny @ss fan-made video.
Enjoy.

I know this was an Marlo-Chris-Snoop Trifecta-less episode, but ya man Omar’s still on the warpath, and has now resulted to popping off petty muscle (Savino) in order to get the message out to Stansfield: let's dance, the last dance, toooniiiight (sorry, I didn't mean the gay/Donna Summer connotation, lol), ‘cuz he’s got his good shoes on. Omar don’t give a damn if he got a crutch in one hand and a burner in the other (sidebar: if that scene wasn’t gangster, then I don’t know what is). They’re STILL no match. Like he said, Mike should thank his lucky stars that Omar had no idea that he was there when they got Butchie– I believe that although it’s most likely against “his code”, being that his present state of mind right now, Omar would’ve offed a 14-year-old, straight up.

I saved this for last because number one, it was really touching, and number 2, it was the last scene. I’m talking about when Kima and her son are sitting in the window of her apartment, engaging in the gritty Baltimore version of “Good Night Moon” (the edition you WON’T find at your public library). “Good night, Po-Po! Good night hustlers! Good night crack whores giving blow jobs in alleys!” It was perfect...so perfect, that I think that it didn’t belong in this episode; they should’ve skipped the musical montage and saved it for the series finale. What do y’all think?

Ain't no love in the heart of the city... Speaking of which, next is the episode where we'll get to see if Omar gets beheaded, as was previously rumored... hmm...

Comments? Thoughts? Holla at me: Breezylovesyababy@gmail.com
Don't forget to check Making The Band 4 tonight, as well as Salt N' Pepa (although that re-cap/reactionary piece will air later on this week)

  • lmaoo, it seemed like i waited 2yrs just for this episode to officially air..... guess how my Monday after gettin this time and a half is gonna be spent....

some nice plantlife and a click of the HBO On-Demand button for Episode 8..........

oh yeah and gotta study my 120 first and foremost.....

but yeah Gus been known Simpleton is a retard and always was "thirsty" for fame...and now he got his star shinning in silver lining for this shit.......

I think Fletch is gonna become world-reknowned for his pen-game on Bubbles, especially since it seems like Bubbles 180 is not only working out for himself, but also beneficent for others, such as my predicted end results for Fletcher as his counterpart Simpleton sinks in the pool of wet shit he's swimming in....

and Sheeeeeiiiiiiittt, Clay Davis is dat nigga.....not to say that his catchphrase is a replacement for a drug habit, but Clay screams Marion Berry (sp, fuck google) all day, and i have been alive to witness the rise and fall of the 80's drug game

  • First off the homeless killer does not have a face. The picture is of a man they took a picture of and said he would disappear. And he did because they took him to a shelter out of town. Second Mike wasn't there when Butchie was killed. He was saying he is lucky Omar didn't recognize him from the apartment when Omar and Butchie homeboy busted in. In that piece Butchie homeboy was killed and Omar jumped out the window. Mike, Snoop, Chris and some other characters were there waiting and let loose on them when they came in. If you gonna do recaps know what happened.

  • Aight y'all-- sometimes I get caught up in writing my notes while watching The Wire so I miss certain things... my fault.. I'll own up this one. I ain't a Templeton.
BUT-- I will say this-- how the f*ck could Omar NOT know that Mike was there when the big shooting happened in the apartment building b4 Omar supermaned out the window? He knows Chris and Snoop where there... and if my memory serves me correctly, Mike wasn't hiding in no f*cking closet or some sh*t.

And I'm saying that for THE TIME BEING, The Homeless Serial Killer had a face. I DO remember him saying he was gonna disappear cuz McNulty took him to that shelter (I DID watch ep 6). Sheesh. Y'all n*ggas are obsessed.

And to IceMike-- I think the short was figuratively speaking. I think what "dies" is not McNulty or Bunk literally, but figuratively, their partnership/relationship is DEAD. U feel me? We all know Prop Joe got a short, and he's dead... and we'll have to see if the same prophecy comes true for Omar. I didn't want to post this in the blog, but I was reading an official straight plot summary recap that said Little Kenard makes a BIG SCORE.... hmm... yeah man.

    Holla @ me.

Well Omar comes walking threw the hood and some little shorties start running screaming Omar, but the same little shorty that called Omar a gump don't run and just watch Omar walk pass. Omar robs another one of Marlow stash houses and walks in the store and pow, that same little nigga takes Omar out just like that spoiler showed. Bunk got Chris DNA from that beating in the alley. Marlow about to go down. It's only two more episodes left. In Demand is the sheeeeeiittt!!!!

Im guessing it was Snoop because on the preview for ep 9 you see Chris meeting with the "The Greek" guys for what looks like a re-up. Then the cops come bashing in and you see white dudes on the ground getting arrested too.....************Yes Omar dies in ep 8 by that punk kid Kenard. I hated it but I loved it. I mean in life/ the streets....nothing goes down the way you would like it to. People get blasted in ways you never imagine.....Al Capone went down because of taxes ....Gotti was got by his own right hand man Sammy the Rat.......thats just life...I hate that life is like that and I love that the Wire writers are not afraid to remind us of life and its cruel sense of humor. ....PEACE

You gotta give omar a better death scene than that.

  • i hated the way omar went out, true enough. but the success of the wire is in the unexpected...the obvious person that everybody wanted to get at marlo was omar, so the writers had to somehow angle that shit off & now the story has to tie in how marlo gets got from somewhere else...omar's real epitath is that last scene. even the coroner knew who this legendary mf was.

  • Omar gets killed by kenard in episode#58 (buying smokes).

Mcnulty gets caught in episode #59, he gets fired and then he commits suicide in episode#10.

Marlo gets bagged by Freemon, but Lester doesnt gett he credit (he still retires happy). Marlo ends up in Jessup with Avon/Weebay/Bird surrounding him.

Chris takes all the bodies and gets sent to death row. Bunk gets him on the murder of Bugs dad, then he (mentally) breaks Chris during the interogation, and gets him to confess on the rest of the murders.

Snoop gets shot and killed by Micheal (with Chris's help). Marlo sends her and Chris to kill Micheal when he catches wind of Mike's mom snitching to the cops (in attempt to eliminate any potential witness's). Chris tips Mike off and tells him to get out of there. Mike ambushes Chris and Snoop when they bust into his apt. to kill him (using the skills Chris and Snoop taught him). He shoots Snoop in the head. Chris nods and motions for Mike to go, after a brief (tense) stare down with guns drawn.

  • yea that goodnight moon scene was sick but, technically, you could find that version in your local library. it was borrowed from the book "clockers" by richard price, who has written episodes of the wire (i'm not sure if he did this one). the book was also made into a movie by spike lee. if you read that book, along with "homicide: a year on the killing streets" and "the corner: a year in the life of an inner city neighbourhood", both by David Simon (creator of the Wire), you will start to notice that quite a few scenes in the Wire have been lifted word for word from these books
