Run for DEEP COVER! Remembering Big Pun

Posted on February 7, 2008 9:00 AM

Wassup y'all...

It's the 8th anniversary of the passing of Christopher Lee Rios, better known as Big Pun, undoubtedly, one of the most talented emcees to set a mike ablaze. Claim to fame: he was the first Latino solo rapper to sell over a million LPs. You know, it's hard to believe how old these rappers would be when you calculate their age from their birth years... and in November, Pun would've made 36. Damn.

And of course, you always have to wonder... would Pun still be that hot today?
Honestly, there has been stuff that I hated, and stuff that I loved from Pun, that makes me realize that while he's not in my Top 5 Emcees, yet I am definitely cognizant of his skill.

There is, however, one track that I will ALWAYS be feeling (and will probably feel this way forever), because of one not-so-simple tongue twister. This song/video also makes me give the Don Cartagena a pass, too.

I know y'all will agree-- it's only right that this is this week's Throwback video.

I wonder where Terror Squad would be like today had Pun lived... if Reminisce Smith would lyrically still be Remy Martin as opposed to Remy Ma... you know?

I got another interesting question for y'all: do you remember how you felt when you heard he'd passed? We always talk about how we felt (matter of fact, some of us can remember what we were wearing that day) when Notorious, Pac, Big L and others pass... but hardly about this man right here. Show ya love for Pun in the comments section below. I

  • Good video. I felt sorry for his kids when he passed. I didn't really have a feeling like when Biggie passed, but I felt sorry for the family.

  • Yo. i remember when i got the newz of my nigga Pun dying. My homeboy called me up hearin summin bout him dying, i didn't believe him. I thought it was a bad rumor but the more i searched around, i found more tid bits of wut happen. XXL.com comfirmed it that nite. I was shocked, i was only 14, and Pun was the illest nigga to me. He had more features than anyone in 98', a classic debut, and 1st Latino solo artist to go platinium. Pun is iller than most of these new niggaz out. He had a great influence on me being a Latino Emcee and set the blueprint but their will never be another Big Pun. He made Fat Joe wut he is today, a household name. I use to be down wit Joe back when i was little and he did "Flow Joe" back in 93', but after Pun passed and everybody left Terror Squad, Joe got greedy and everything changed. I'm not hatin on Joe but this nigga needz to see the light. Thatz my word. Detroit got luv for Big Dogg Punisher! Rest in Peace.

  • When Pun passed, i didn't wanna beleive the shit, i was still amped off Capitol Punishment, we was still in da streets at the time and used to just go ape at the ease of Puns delivery, the potency of his lyrics, and the dashes of humor that gave all the gangster talk a more human demension to them as opposed to the "robo-thugs" of the world.....

And whats even better is that Pun's only mission was to get people to recognize he was definitely an MC, not a rapper, not a latino rapper or MC, but just a ill MC period, and just so happens he was PR and proud to let the world know that while accomplishing his short-lived mission in the game.......

i don't know him personally to even wanna comment on anything other than his music, but lyrically i thought he was better than Biggie bar for bar, and got into many arguments because of it.....Biggie had the overall package to me, but i'm a dude who listens to MC's for what they say on the mic, not what sample the producer flipped or how catchy a hook is, and lyrically Pun was on his own planet, fuck trying to Justify it, the same as Big L lyrically, he was on another planet, ask Jay-Z how he got Solar Eclipsed by L over dat Milkbone beat......

I'mma end this one off wit a R.I.P. to Big Pun, Fallen but Never 4Gotten!!!!

    Peace!!
