Wyclef Jean Brings "The Carnival 2" VH1

If you caught my earlier post at 9am, then you know that the reason I am not posting a recap for The Way It Is today is because last night, I attended a taping of VH1 Soul Soulstage featuring the crazycoolest Haitian on earth, Wyclef Jean. It was held at St. Ann’s Warehouse in DUMBO (also known as West Bubblephuck) and the purpose of the event was so that Clef could preview songs off of his upcoming album, The Carnival 2. The show will air on December 4th, the same day that the album will be released.
Okay, now that we got that out of the way, let me just say this:
If you’ve never been to a Wyclef concert, or missed seeing him at the West Indian Day Parade or something like that... then you need to get up on it... ‘cuz this dude can put on a show.
This dude had white chicks wining like we was back on The Parkway and shyt.
True story, I’ve been a fan of this guy since The Fugees days. And personally, I’ve always enjoyed his solo albums. When he came out with The Ecleftic , I was in high school taking mandatory guitar classes, and the ONLY song I learned how to play purely by ear that year is Clef’s “Thug Angels”, (you know, the one that goes “dirty, dirty, dirty, dirty south/I used to play ball at the YMCA...”) I used to KILL that sh*t. Reggie aka Haitian LL Cool J, if you’re reading this, I STILL thank you to do this day for teaching me that, son.
So anyway, the vibe last night was bananas. It was standing room only, because Clef WANTED everyone to dance. Some up-and-coming rapper named G.Dot was actually waving the Haitian flag from the audience. Yeah, I know...
One thing I should mention is that one of the first songs Clef did was a song off of the album called “Fast Car”. In my opinion, it’s once of his strongest. The song discusses people whose death or near-fatal experiences had a car involved, such as Sean Bell, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, BIG, Tupac, and Kanye West. I should mention that before doing the song, he offered his condolences to the West family, which made the crowd erupt into cheers. But seriously, this is a track worth listening to... which is why I’ve included it here for listening pleasure. Enjoy.

He did other songs, including faves such as “Gone Til’ November”, “911", “President”, and even did “Sweetest Girl” (Niia was there as well... she sang Weezy’s part... she sounds better), but when he did his “Carnival” song... everybody lost it. He put on his mask and everybody was ready to dub. At one point during the “Carnival” song, he jumped INTO the audience and danced WITH YOURS TRULY. Yes, SOHH heads, Breezy got to drop it like it's hot with Wyclef. As my brother would say, I'm a journalist, but I was gettin' my fan on a lil' bit. Couldn't help it, y'all! The crowd was cheering me on, so I figured, hey, why the hell not? This other elderly white lady was also shaking what music videos gave her, and Clef was so impressed that he actually brought her onstage to talk to her for a bit. “Your moms is gangsta,” he mentioned to her son who was in the crowd. Word. This woman was next to me almost the entire time and she was getting her freeeak on.
Lastly, what I will say is that Jigga ain’t the only one that can bring the laughs to VH1. Wyclef also cracked a ton of jokes and spit a few freestyles during tape changes. Matter of fact, he told the drummer to “stop smoking weed” and to come harder than that” and started some songs again. He even made a cute lil' joke about how he be in the front seat of the car listening to KRS-ONE and his baby daughter's in the back going, "ay bay bay, ay bay bay" (we all started dying at that). I yelled out one time, “Kick it, Clef” and he said, “Somebody said ‘kick it Clef’”, and he started going into an entire freestyle based on what I said ... to the beat of “Deep Cover (98 Twinz) Remix”. Yeah man.
And yes, if you're wondering... he did play the guitar with his mouth towards the end of his set, at which he performed the Bob Marley classic, "No Woman, No Cry".
I know this was a bit long but y'all don't understand... I had a good @$$ time last night. I gotta give VH1 their props-- they know how to throw an event all around (I'm also talking about the press room, etc.)
