The Salt N' Pepa Show Ep. 6: "Push It-- For Justice!"

Posted on November 27, 2007 9:00 AM

Well, fam, I gotta say: this episode didn't hold any REAL SNP drama that we've enjoyed seeing for the past few months or so. I guess it's because something way bigger than the two of them was at hand for this installment.

I'm glad that they decided to go down there to support The Jena 6 protest. Throughout all the hoopla, I didn't even hear that they'd went down there. But you know what? I'm 100% sure they weren't doing it for the media to recognize, they were doing it out of genuine interest and concern. So for them to go under the radar is fine. It's those with power who DIDN'T step up that should be scrutinized, but we won't touch upon that. Right now, it's about Salt N' Pep's roadtrip to Jena.

What's interesting about the trip is that it's not only just our girls, Salt's brought along her entire family (LIKE THEY HAD A CHOICE IN THE MATTER) and Egypt (Pep's eight-year-old daughter) accompanies her mom on the trip. The two young kids are enjoying being on the road, naturally, but Salt wanted to make sure that her youngest son Chappelle (is that his name) as well as Egypt fully understood the significance of their being there. Ugh. I must say, it's always rough having to educate innocent children about hate, stereotypes and racism. I dread the day when I’m going to forced to have that talk with my two year-old niece or my own future children someday. To the parents on the board-- how do YOU do it?

Worst of all, the kids think that their moms might get arrested and attacked by police dogs. Chappelle's even really upset by it. Luckily, Salt uses her motherly tactfulness to quiet his fears. Please honey. The only reason why there might've been an arrest is if Pep walks through the tourbus in a towel and lets a nip slip while Salt's hubby was looking! (I was SO AFRAID that was going to happen, ha ha).

The rest of the episode just showed the duo as they spoke to the families of The Jena 6 and bits of the rally. I think that it was wonderful for our girls to sit down with the families and talk to them, just because it gave the viewers at home a look into their strength that they maintained for the sake of their children-- a view that may not have necessarily been shown on interviews that were conducted with news networks.

I am also glad Sandy used her noggin and decided to wear sneakers for the 2.5 mile walk-- she would've definitely went down about 10 notches in my book if she did.

Everyone down there also got a lil' treat: Salt decides that she's "only doing 'Push It!' for the Jena 6!" and the rallyers got treated to a special remix of the song... which I WISH I had footage of but I don't (sorry, y'all).

(Don't worry, I'm sure the drama will continue on next week).
Thoughts? Comments? Leave 'Em!

NEXT WEEK: I dunno, but for some reason, Salt thinks she looks like The Cowardly Lion...

  • I thought the Jena 6 rally was a pretty cool sight but my mind is indecisive over them boys after seeing that "money in the mouth" picture all over the place of the supposed "Defense Fund" money. Pepa has urked me for the last time. Sick of her fixation on her weave and her makeup. She wasn't half as over the top when she was on the Surreal Life. Makes me believe she's fronting for the show. Her son Tyran is 17 now??? Dang, I remember when she was pregnant with him and giving an interview for Word Up magazine. If I remember correctly, his pops is Herbie Luv Bug, right? I could be wrong, but I can't recall. I was trying to see Treach from Naughty By Nature in Egypt's face but can't seem to see him there. Oh well. When is this season over?
