Keyshia Cole's The Way It Is 2 Ep. 2: Let the Healing Begin

Posted on November 7, 2007 1:00 PM

Wassup everyone--

To all of you that watched this episode, you know how emotionally draining it was. I almost couldn't get through it. It was pretty heavy.

We also got to see Nefeteria (shaking my head at that name) and Frankie in a new light. This is a deeply wounded family that is taking its slow (but sure) steps to healing.

I just have one question-- do you guys think that being a mother is harder than being on drugs?

At the top of the episode, Keyshia has decided that she, her mom and sister need to attend therapy to cess out their mess. Manny(ger) also invites himself to the session. I give homegirl props on recognizing that an outside, impartial person may be necessary to mediate their problems. I'm not trying to insult my people, but how many Black folks do y'all know that are willing to attend therapy? You know what I mean. I know some people say this as a joke, but its not too far from fact; alot of people believe that Jesus and Oprah will fix everything. God WILL heal everything, yes, but God blesses the child that helps him/herself. I say that because for some, going to therapy means coming to terms with the fact that you have a problem. But isn't that the most important step?

Ok, let me get back on track.

While the ladies are in session, it seems as if some blanketed insults are being hurled about the way this one and that one was treated when they were coming up, but we all know that all of that is deeply rooted in pain.
However, what sets Frankie into a rage is when Keyshia mentions that she'll never forget her foster family and what they did for her. Can you blame her?

Frankie retorts with some interesting statements, such as:

"Being a mother is harder than being on drugs."
"I don't care about the fame or fortune, I just like when they call me Mama".

What do y'all think about what she said?

Here's what I thought of the therapy session:
Frankie's jumping the gun. You just got outta jail, Mama. You say that you don't want the fame and fortune, but sometimes I feel like you want Keysh and Neffie to hurry up and forgive you so y'all can start poppin' Moet on her plush, cream colored couches. I don't know what it's like to have dealt with an addict for a parent, but I can imagine that it does take time. And you just have to let it happen. David Bowie said it best, "Time may change me, but I can't change time."

I also have to give Keysh a lot of respect for the way she handled herself during the session. Either’s she’s smart and knows that flipping out on her Moms would make her look HORRIBLE to her audience, or she is genuinely trying to keep cool and merely have a conducive therapy session. Keep this up, Keysh, and I’ll forget all those rumors I heard about your interviewing etiquette.

Keyshia also goes to L.A. to finish up the album. Yeah, yawn. However, we do get to see Babs--- oops, I meant Amina, the skeleton rapping on "Shoulda Let You Go". Wow. The magic a video shoot make-up can pull off. ANYWAY...

Now, what do Neffie and Frankie do while Keysh's tryna sing on-key?

They go speak to a group of women who are trying to recover from their own vices.

Frankie starts off with a stirring admission:

"I'm Frankie and I'm a recovering drug addict. I’ve been clean for 4 years... I lost my children, I lost my home, and I lost my respect behind crack cocaine."

She then gives the women inspiration to go forth with their lives and forgive themselves.

Wow. Neff and Frankie really had an effect on these women. Two of them even got up and "testified". It was almost as if a deceased pastor had taken over Frankie and spoke through her, because then she got some weird sixth sense that someone in the room needed to be prayed over-- badly. And sure enough, the camera pans to a woman bawling her eyes out.

But what got me, what really got me , was the look Neffie had on her face while talking about speaking to the women's group. She had an ethereal glow about her that made me think that beneath all of that tough demeanor, there is someone with a huge heart waiting to come out.

I'm not going to write much more because I really want to know what you guys think of Neffie and Frankie, if your opinions of them have altered any. Holla @tcha girl.

Oh yeah-- peep back here @ 3:00 p.m., as I got ANOTHER music video for ya.

WHO LOVES YA, BABY?

  • I didn't have a mother on crack, but I had a mother who was very abusive. I have gotten over that but it makes it hard to have a relationship with a parent who is in denial, selfish and does not want to accept responsibility for the damage that they have caused. I have alot of respect for Keshia Cole. I'm not really a fan of her music but I just might buy her album just to support her. She is a strong woman. I wish her much success and I hope that her mom and sister don't stab her in the back after all she's done for them.

  • I had skip down and answer your question about which is harder...

I have NEVER been on drugs but I can imagine that being a mother is harder...you ask why -
well you have to actually be present and responsible for someone other than yourself.

when you are on drugs you get a "i'm high" reprieve therefore you are not held accountable by ANYONE to do anything that is expected of you. For some people that is an EASY way out.

Motherhood - people get to look and analyze and judge your work - as a crackhead that is all that you are "she's a crackhead"

Now I am going back to your review...

I thought Frankie and Neffie did a good job I just wish Neffie would have put away those too midgets in her chest a lil better! But I love them all. And I think that Frankie is moving too fast b/c the REAL reason she is clean is b/c she was locked up - I wonder will being out make her see things differently!
