VH1 Hip Hop Honors Recap-- Well, It Was Better Than the MTV VMA's

Posted on October 9, 2007 9:00 AM

***IMPORTANT NOTE: Due to the fact that both the I Love NY season premiere and the VH1 Hip Hop Honors aired on the same night, to make things easier on myself, I am posting the Honors recap TODAY and the season premiere recap tomorrow. Thanks. ***

Ok, this is how I’m doing this recap. Instead of waiting until the end of the show to blog, I’m doing it as the show goes on– so pardon if some of my sentences are quite random. It’s raw Breezy, unedited, unscripted, straight off the top of the dome. Plus, I want to get to bed SOMETIME tonight, so this is a lil’ easier. Bear with me.

Ok, note to VH1: If you're trying to get people to watch this, then DON'T rub them the wrong way with the choice of a host. Tracy Morgan? If I wanted to watch a crackhead on TV, I'd pop in my Chapelle Show DVD. True story, I've heard NUMEROUS stories about this guy's drug habit and seeing him at various BX bus stations looking strung out and sh*t. You think maybe he was born looking the way he does, or did snorting a brick a day do that to him? 'Cuz I swear, this dude looks like a chocolate covered Grinch.

Tracy%20Morgan%201.jpg

Grinch%20Mask.jpg

Am I wrong?

Basically, the way this Honors thing went down is that a selected few of hip-hop's elite (Missy Elliot, A Tribe Called Quest, Teddy Riley and the New Jack Swing Era, The Wild Style movie, Whodini and Snoop Dogg) were honored for their contributions to music, and were celebrated by their contemporaries. But y'all are smart of enough to figure that out.

Now who did what, what did everybody wear, how were the performances and all that good ish? More importantly... WHO WAS DRUGGED UP ON STAGE?

HEEEEERE WEEE GOOOO!

Missy%20E.jpg

Why did a whole bunch of people decide to pay tribute to Ms. E by mocking her lesbian mating call, “Braw-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta”! No wonder they had peeps like John Legend and Fonzworth Bentley doing it on the clip! (True story about the cat-call though... my cousin told me that, and she’s gay like 6:15).

Personally, I liked listening to Missy give the Cliff’s Notes of how she became who she is. She’s definitely in my top 5 hip-hop artists, and is my second favorite female rapper, next to Lyte. She’s been in the game for a hot minute– anyone remember when she was down with that group Sista when she was rockin that weaved up ponytail? Taking it back, y'all!

About her “tribute” performance...

Why did Tweet sound like a slowed-down robot when performing “I Can’t Stand The Rain?” And she need to return that Afro wig back to Erykah Badu’s garbage can. But at least she’s doing something with herself these days besides writing one time hits about... self-lovin’.

It was BEAUTIFUL to see Timbo (my baby’s daddy, y’all!) show up to give his props, because word is that him and Ms. E don’t hang out at the same gay clubs no mo’. Forget Jigga and Bee– Timothy and Missy E was the best hip-hop “husband and wife” ever and damnit, this divorce SUCKS!

And even though I want to smack the sh!t out of Nelly Furtado’s hairstylist, I ENJOYED revisiting the “Get Ur Freak On” remix. I even downloaded it in during the commercial!

Teddy%20Riley.jpg

HEEEEERREEEE’S SH*TTY!
Diddy shows up to pay tribute to Teddy Riley and the great New Jack Swing era. Oooh, I love me some Guy, don’t y’all? What you youngsters know about “Piece of My Love,” “I Like” or “Leeet’s Chiiillll, let’s settle dooown, that’s what I wanna do, just me and you,”.... brings back memories... ::sigh::

Wait– I thought this was a tribute to Teddy. WHY is P.Diddy running down his resume? Don’t nobody give a f*ck– we’re CONSTANTLY reminded of your presence every time we see those cologne ads, hear Yung Joc’s lazy-tongued @$$ and see that picture of your g-ddamn mohawk that STILL overlooks Times Square, n*gga! Sit the f*ck down somewhere and push that MTB4 album!! Seriously, this dude needs to catch a heart attack so he can keep quiet for a few months, I swear...

About the Teddy Riley Tribute...

Asking Ne-Yo and T-Pain to pay homage to such a great is like asking O.J. Simpson to teach a “How To Be a Good Samaritan” class– it can only end in a disaster. Which, is what became of Teddy P’s rendition of Keith Sweat’s “I Wanna.” All I have to say about his vocals is... YUCK! Aww, T-P. Did someone play a prank and steal the vocoder from your dressing room at the last minute?

Surprisingly– Ne-Yo’s rendition of Guy’s “I Like” isn’t that bad.

Kool Mo Dee kicks @$$!!!

Look at Salt-N-Pepa. They look good, even though it’s more than obvious that Pep got that nose pepped up. Very Michael Jackson-ish, girl! I hope it came with a receipt. By the way, I notice how BE... oops, VH1 is plugging their reality show in every other commercial. Gotta love it.

HELL NO! HELL F*CKIN NAW! Keyshia Cole and Ne-Yo are BUTCHERING Michael Jackson’s “Remember The Time”! Get the mad hoodrat and the mad hatted gerbil off the stage NOW, damnit!

I’m SO GLAD that Blackstreet decided to show up. Oooh, I love me some Blackstreet! And damnit, they done took it back with Wreck-N-Effect. These new-fangled producers have NOTHING on Teddy. NOT A DAMN THING! Stick that “Umbrella” up your @$$, Tricky Stewart!

Wild%20Style.jpg
You think Uncle L could’ve done Breezy a favor and came out shirtless, rocking a Dookie rope and a Kangol? Nooooo... I was horribly let down. Is it me or does it look like he’s really focused on reading that teleprompter? Either that, or he’s reeeeaaaally sedated. I don’t know. Maybe it would help if he took off the shades?

Did Busy Bee & KRS-ONE RIP that Wild Style tribute performance, or what? I feel like a trip to Blockbuster is in order now...

Whodini.jpg

Wow... look at WHODINI... or “The Temptations of Hip-Hop”, as Chris Rock deemed them. They haven’t aged... much. Shoot, that don’t matter, ‘cuz the freaks still come out at night, ya heard?

Watching Nelly, Nick Cannon and Jermaine Durpri perform Whodini classics reminds me of watching “Celebrity Rap Superstar” for some reason... three people who have some knowledge (I use that term loosely) of rap trying to recite lyrics perfectly. However, a question remains in my mind: why did Janet let Jermaine leave the house with that fugly sweater on? You don’t have to try to hard to make sure the ladies won’t find him attractive, mama. Nick Cannon’s get up just reminded me of the nerd he played in “Love Don’t Cost a Thing”, right after he got “thugged out.” Stop pretending.

Snoop%20Dogg.jpg

WHAAAAT? Harvey Keitel is doing the Snoop intro? That went over my head... ::makes confused noise, similar to the noise going in Keitel’s head as he tries to pronounce the names of the rappers::

You can’t deny Snoop’s influence on the hip-hop game, and pop culture as a whole. True story– one of my first assignments when I got to college was to critique the lyrics and tone of “Gin and Juice”, and it wasn’t a joke, either. I learned a lot about being a music critic off of that. But that’s neither here nor there.

But back to the tributes... how come Coco wasn’t on stage playing her role while Ice-T did his version of “Gin and Juice”?

I noticed that... when Pharrell spits other people’s lyrics... he’s not that bad. Maybe he should just do an album of covers instead of recording bullsh*t songs like “Number One”.

Of course, Skateboard P and the Dogg had to perform “Drop It Like It’s Hot.” And if I’m not mistaken, I saw his son! Aww. No, I’m talking about his real son, not Bow Wow (even though he did perform).

ATCQ.gif

Do that, do that, do do that that that!

IT’S ABOUT TIME! For all y’all ringtone rapper fans that don’t know, go cop Midnight Marauders to gain some knowledge on the first group to combine jazz and hip-hop. For example, one of my favorite hip-hop cuts is “Electric Relaxation”... and the beat is so smooth, you might have to listen to it twice to realize that they’re rapping about boning a chick (now you got Seaman’s (semen) furniture... ish had me buggin’ for a minute, for real!)

Ooooh, look at Common’s sexy as hell a$$ perform “Bonita Appelbaum.” Common could GET IT! WHOO!!! (Sorry, I went off on a tangent, as usual) To my NYC cats– did any of y’all catch his show at Nokia Theatre on Sunday? I MISSED IT!

You know what? I’m not mad at Pharrell & Lupe performing “Electric Relaxtion”; they’ve got a good, cool grasp on the lyrical flow of the song.

Question: How many eightballs or ecstacy pills did Busta do before he came out to do his verse on “Scenario”? I know that Busta can be incoherent at times, but g-ddamn, n*gga, were you gargling mouthwash onstage? Don’t you know you’re supposed to spit after 30 seconds?! [watch clip below]

The Tribe closed out the show with a performance of “Check The Rhyme” and “Award Tour”. Classic sh*t.

Overall, I’d have to say that I wasn’t disappointed. I vaguely remember the preceding VH1 Hip Hop Honors, so I can’t compare.

All I got to say is... at least the execution of THESE performances was better than that f*cked up sh*t MTV tried to pull off. Y’all are slippin, dogs.

Aight, that’s a wrap for now. I need to take my @$$ to bed. Holla @ me about what you thought about the show– and also I have a question for y’all to mull over. If you actually watched the show, you’ll notice that VH1 also plugged Gotti’s Way (yep, it’s exactly what you think it is, they gave the latest Negro-flavored reality show a name). ARE Y’ALL INTERESTED IN HAVING ME RECAP THE SHOW? I’ll only do it if y’all want me to; majority rules on that one. Just let me know in the comments section. Holla @tcha girl.

WHO LOVES YA, BABY?

  • Breezy I don't know why your making Teddy Riley to be this "great singer"

Here is a simple analogy for you:

Teddy Riley is to the 80's is what T-Pain is to us now.

I'm not knocking Teddy's production or song writing skills. but we was a horrible singer, just like T-Pain is now.

Keith Sweat wasn't all that great either.

You briefly mentioned that you were attending college when the song, "Gin and Juice" came out (side bar: damn your old!!!). Fast forward to present day and your greatest career accomplishment is writing for a hip hop blog. Is it me or do you think Breezy should seriously start considering a career change.

  • Yo I watched that joint last night, it was crazy. Talk about memories, I was getting hype seeing guys like Whodini and Tribe do they thing. Imo, the best part was seeing today's artist show love to those influenced them.

I think Whodini had the best set, they showed these new school dudes how to put on a show. That's one thing the new school needs to learn from the old school artist is how to perform, a concert should be more than 30 dudes standing on stage making faces while one dudes spits some shit you can barely hear. Whodini had the crowd going crazy.

My personal favorite though was the Tribe, they was my favorite group as a kid. I still remember listening to Low End Theory in my walkman and I still know every word from Scenario line for line. What's good with Phife though, homie looked sick, like he got the package, j/k.

Teddy Riley did his thing too, that beat from "Rump Shaker" is still fucking bananas and got honey's shaking they rump. Teddy Riley really influence a generation of music, he's major.

The Snoop set was hot, seeing Bow Wow and Snoop on stage was different, they should do an album together cause they both could stand some new fans.

Tracy Morgan tried, those video sketches with him as the cabbie were kinda funny.

Lastly it a shame a guy like Fab Five Freddy isn't running a label or doesn't have a more prominent position in hip hop today, he's been there since the beginning and has always represented Hip Hop to the fullest.

All in it was a good show and makes up for "Flavor of Love" and "I Love New York".

It was just a good ass feeling hearing and remembering those Teddy, Whoodini, and Tribe classics! We can't live in the past but those songs represent some good ass times and fun party days for me!! that era is soo relevant to everything going on today....they took it back to the real true essence of hiphop.... I'm only 30 but I feel hella privileged to have lived in NYC all my life and experience the birth and growth of hiphop. WHOA is all I can say!...VH1 really got right with this years honoree's!!!

  • Nice recap Breezy.

Hate Hate and More Hate, you my peoples, but you got a little crazy on me today. Do you really think Breezy is eating off this blog? We don't know what her accomplishments are.

The show was good, but I have a really hard time watching singers tank in a live performance. I cover my eyes like Freddie or Jason is about to shank them. I felt so much shame for Keisha that the show lost my attention for a while. If someone doesn't get this girl voice lessons soon I'm gonna go off. She has a voice, but doesn't have any control over it. The key was way to high for her last night and as hard as Ne-Yo tried to cover for her, it wasn't workin.

Phife is ill. He is in need of a kidney transplant according to All Hip Hop. Q-Tip is my baby daddy and killed it like I knew he would.

I was disappointed that T-Pain didn't use the vocoder, or whatever the hell they call it. He is the Roger Troutman/Teddy Riley performer of his day (I don't know if he produces his own music like them) and he is the perfect artist to do a tribute to Teddy, not Keith. Still I didn't think his performance was horrible.

All in all the show was good, but I have to catch the rerun for the parts that I missed after Keyshia made my stomach turn.

I am feeling the Gotti previews even though I ain't crazy about him. I'd like to see you do a recap.

  • First and foremost! T-pain is officially banned from my airwaves! DAYUM is he wack. I wish they had of gotten Keith Sweat or even dug up Roger Troutman instead of his ass. How gimmicky can you freaking get?! He had that dumb smile on his face his whole performance - you know the one that says, damn I sound busted as hell. Only in America can someone with that level of non-singing voice; actually make it in the industry!

Missy seems to have fallen off the proverbial diet train; but her hair was, as always tight.

Does Keisha Cole get her feet bound before she performs? What is up with the inability to walk, dance or balance in her shoes?

LL Cool J is starting to perturb me with his style of dress. It’s like this Biker Hip Hop look - however, it ususally is all made up by the abundance of FINENESS!!

Pepa has come down with a fatal case of ‘ToniBraxtonitis”. Why get this old and get nasty? That clip of her singing Whatta Man in the man’s crotch was looking desperate.

    Ne-Yo NOOOOOOOOOO!

Jalil Jalil from Whodini - still made my heart skip a baby beat. All that Chocolate Goodness. The fact that my sister fucked both of them - turns that into a nightmare, but that’s another post.

Kool Mo Dee been to Mickey D’s.

I never knew that Teddy Riley produced the Show, with Dougie Fresh and Slick Rick. He was looking good and amazingly actually sounding better - cause ya’ll know he couldn’t sing. I found it interesting that out of all the groups attributed to the New Jack Swing - only Chauncy from Blackstreet incarnation one showed up. Teddy isolated himself with that ego. He still a cutie though.

Did NY have a blackout caused by Fab Five Freddy Big Ass Head?! DAYUM!!!

Phife is fighting diabetes; for those who were wondering if he is sick.

When you can Wop down into a split - you got my vote!

I always get proud when they break out the Originators like Caz etc. because it brings to light that once again Black People have made an impact on the history of this planet as we know it. These brothers didn’t make any money, alot of them are not doing well - but they are finally getting the homage they deserve.

I could probably say a whole lot more - but all in all it was a good show. It wasn’t the best one, but it was good. I can’t even begin to tell you who they should honor next year - just keep honoring em.

  • The show was aight, there was some good highlights and many lows, but Tracy Morgan is a funny MO-FO. I want to send a get well to Phife Dog, on some serious shit some of you on here are just mesed up individuals to be saying some of the shit yall saying about dude. I know somebody in yall family has the same problem he has and you wouldn't want nobody talkin shit about your family in there time of need. Remember HIP HOP doesn't have a medical insurance or a retirement plan unless your a in the office and not the booth. Aight enough of that. Keyshia Cole, T-Pain, needs to stop singing in public, and I like both of there music, but she they are not making me wanna see them in concert if I keep seeing live performances like this. They need to have a FreshFest 2008 with all these old school rappers and R&B groups so I can really get my party on!!!

If I had said that I had to write a paper on Etta James' song, "At Last", would you think that I was a sixty-year-old hip hop blogger? BE FORREAL!

  • I just wanna send some prayers up for Phife. I had clients on dialysis and having to depend on that blood machine every couple of days is hard. I would always tell my kidney clients to eat a diet of all-natural, no dairy or wheat (white bread is still wheat! the color is just bleached out) brown rice, soy milk and vegetable diet. NO JUNKFOOD. It's hard for the blood to clear out sugar, processed and canned (chemical filled) foods, and the less junk gets put in the blood. For snacks he needs fruits and nuts. ( I always recommend cashews cause they are fillng)

Hopefully someone will get this message to him cause most medical doctors wont tell these things.

Eating this way would give him more energy than his current state. This same diet is good for Autism & sickle cell sufferers as well.

    Hopefully I've helped someone today.

  • That show was the motherfuckin bomb, ya heard. Whodini's set was the shit. It took me back to 85 when I was at one of my seventh grade school dances. Shit brought tears of joy. Much Love to Jahlil, Excstasy & Grand Master Dee. They got classics. For the record, Nick Cannon & Nelly killed it. That was the best performance since the HipHop Honors began, right up there with Big Daddy Kane's performance 2 years ago.

I think Busta & Lupe fucked up Tribe's set a bit. I could half understand Bus with all that screaming. Tribe is my favorite group of alltime! Get well my nigga Phife Dawg - The 5 Footer.

Teddy Riley & New Jack Swing was the highlight for me. Too many good memories. Aaron & Damien Hall was suppose to be there, B. New Swing was my high school years, 87-91. Shiitt, I macked my first girlfriend with Piece Of My Love. VH1 is cashing in on honoring my heroes. Now when is somebody going to smarten up and give these legends deals.

After watching the show, I realized there are really no Greatest Of Alltime Rappers. Its an incredible feat to be acknowledged as a great rapper. But no one person stands above all the Greats.

    So - KILL THAT NOISE!

Krs-one think he is the Grand Wizard of hip hop or something. This dude has flows, and he is an Old school legend, but everything this guy says isnt right. He just some old nigga still tryin to get shine. He just mad cause nobody wants to listen to that old school shit anymore. He is the same nigga that stood on his album cover with straps, and then comes down on the next generation for violence and all the other bullshit. He co-signed 50 cent, when everybody knows 50 makes pop music. He was tryin to take away from Kanye too. Just cause he WAS hot doesnt mean he some kind of hip hop guru who can dictate wtf real hip hop is. He just a old ass hater who mad that it aint 1987 anymore.

  • The New Jack Swing tribute was a hot mess! All of the singers sounded horrible.

How dare anyone put Teddy and T-pain on the same level. Teddy never claimed to be a singer like. Aaron Hall was the singer of the group; Teddy was the producer/songwriter. Teddy didn't dump songs like Buy You A Drink or I'm In love with A Stripper. He made quality music - classic sounds that still crank today.

Keith Sweat wasn't Luther but he could hold a note and is much better than T-pain. Keith Sweat's version of I Wanna Her sounded NOTHING like T-pain so that shows he had something to work with.

  • I saw the show, and I agree that it was better than the VMAs which is not saying much. Outside of the Whodini tribute, the show was not well executed. Did the acts even rehearse? T-Pain and Keyshia Cole should be banned from singing other people's song, or singing in public for that matter.

This something I commonly hear when people diss KRS One, they don't like how when he say "I am Hip Hop" and the like..but they don't realize that we are all Hip Hop and when KRS say that he means it in that way. Anyone can be hip hop if they appriecate the culture and love the music. I think alot of people get intimidated by KRS's intelligence and resume and the fact that if your wack you will get called out.

I know the term "wack" is relative, so that why KRS gets alot of hate but, c'mon man Nelly is wack on the mic, he refers to himself as "Pimp Juice", he clowns himself without knowing it.
