Monday Mayhem: Some VIP's (and Breezy) Offer Their Opinions on Nas' "N*gga" Fiasco

Posted on October 22, 2007 9:00 AM

Hey, Fam-- I know y'all hate it when I make the blogs too long, but this one is a lil' lengthy for a reason. Please read the entire thing-- there is an important question at the end that I would really appreciate your thoughts on. Thanks.

You know what? Last night, I realized that I haven’t spoken my peace about The Street’s Disciple deciding to name his new album, N*gga .

Before I can get on my soapbox and offer my two cents (me being a person who admittedly uses the N word on this blog, but never it in person– true story as hypocritical as it may be), I thought that it would be interesting to share some clips of people linked to the hip-hop industry voicing their views on it.

I know that this first video was posted on other SOHH blogs earlier this week, but for those of you who haven’t caught it, I’m posting it again. Below is a clip of the FOX News interview featuring Allhiphop founder Chuck Creekmur and SOHH CEO Felicia Palmer as expert hip-hop panelists.

Wow... first of all, from a journalistic point of view, every one knows that Fox News is HIGHLY right-wing, so of course they’re going to collect any clip they can to shed Nas in the harshest light. This is why I can’t stomach Fox News at times. Does anyone here typically watch FOX News on the regular? What’s your opinion on them?

P.S.– John Gibson is a racist, ignorant, @$$.

This next video features mogul L.A. Reid giving his "support" at the premiere of American Gangster last Friday night:

Is it me, or does L.A. really sound like he doesn’t know what the hell is going on, like he just received the memo about the album title on his Blackberry five minutes before that interview?

Lastly, Al Sharpton brings up a valid point (on which I expound upon later):

Where's the video for the debate featuring Russell Simmons and Stanley Crouch on this issue? Now that I'd like to see. (Calm down, it doesn't exist-- yet. )

Now, here's what I think:

First and foremost, Nas is an artist. To tell him he shouldn’t title his album a certain way is censorship, which I am against 110%.

However... bigger than him being an artist, Nasir Olu Dara Jones is an African-American male in the public eye. To title your album “n*gga”, for whatever reason it may be, is socially irresponsible. Even if he were inspired to do it based on certain events like Sean Bell shooting, the Jena 6, etc, like my friend told me over the phone, “taking the name and slapping a barcode on it isn’t making it positive. How would that look at K-Mart?” Seriously– you can’t take the sting out of something by selling it. Even more, every ethnic group in this world has been sullied with a racial/ethnic slur. However, do you honestly think DJ Khaled is going to come out with an album titled Sand N-gger ? What about Fat Joe and Joell Ortiz, I’ll be damned if they both release albums entitled Spic . And those words do not have as much as a hateful, history as n-gger.

Nas, if you’re reading this, I DON’T THINK YOU’RE IGNORANT. However, I do believe that this is a bad idea. Personally, I don’t distinguish between n*gga/n*gger. You can NEVER make those epithets positive or take the sting out of them. All we can do as a people is strive to erase them... and what you’re doing is not “counterproductive and counterrevolutionary.”

Here is a question I want to pose to you guys, the consumers: Why is it that when Nas decided to call his album N*gga , it incited fire and brimstone, but back when O.D.B. came out with the album title N*gga Please, , it wasn’t admonished? I don’t remember a press conference being needed for Ol’ Dirty to defend himself. What’s so different?

SPEAK ON IT IN THE COMMENTS!

Don’t forget to check The Salt N Pepa Show on VH1, 10 p.m. EST.

WHO LOVES YA, BABY?

The outcry that this is getting is exactly why Nas is doing it black people hear "nigger or nigga" and they lose it like its the 1800s again. U call a cop a "dick" some get offended others jus accept it as a word, u call a white boy a cracker he doesnt cry racism cuz its a word, u call an asian a chinx one might kick the shit out of you but they dont cry racism either. Black people need to get over wanting reparations and blaming the Man ofor everything we come to far and that bullshits behind us real talk

  • I just think that there are so many other important issues we have to focus on besides what one dude is going to name his album...Socially irresponsible or not, we don't have a right to censor his art...Soon, the government is going to tell us we can't say anything at all. Free speech means we are able to say what we want, not just what others want to hear...

  • um ...to answer your last question, most people didn't take ODm seriously enough to want to have any type of feeling towards anyhing he does.

As for Nasir Olu Dara, hey I'm one os his fans....but I too do think naming the album "N*gger" is a bad idea. Nas has stated that the purpose of him naming it that is to remove the meaning from the word. I would expect someone like Nas to have more knowledge and senstivity towards the history of the African-American race not to try and promote the use of the term. The fact is black people will look like huge idiots if we try and "legalize" the word nigger. Isn't it ironic that we should be fighting to use a slur against us, instead of resisting it?

I for one will teach my kids that it is a wrong term that was used against our forefathers, i won't be supporting use of the word. i can't speak for anyone else. Let's have some dignity as black poeple please.

  • Ok we know Nas is doing this only for attention on his album. And I believe that his intentions are taken into consideration. With hip hop under attack this is a case of bad timing. As for O.D.B.'s album that probably went under the radar, so it slid by. But Rap definitely has the spotlight right now. I mean we beat out a country artist in 1st sales! So if Nas puts this album out with that title it better be the most educational, positive message ever spoken over a beat.

  • When ODB did it, there weren't as many caucasians being mainstream with their racist mentalities. That's all it took, so now everything that's gonna refer to the "culture" is gonna be criticized good or bad.

  • I agree with some of the other comments made about not stifling artistic expression and yet still this is a BAD idea. The reason I decided to comment, however, was to address why calling someone white "cracker" doesn't have the same sting to it.

Racism isn't just not liking a particular race. That's prejudice. Being denied jobs isn't racism (though, it does have something to do with it)it's discrimination. Racism is based on power. Basically, prejudice is a belief, discrimination is a behavior, racism is a system. Are we clear? Ok. Now, for a black person to call a white person cracker is futile because we have no power within the system of racism. That's like a homosexual trying to make fun of a straight person. It doesn't work because heterosexuals are the "norm" and the ones with the systematic power. Another basic example, people who make fun of the president. It means nothing to him, cuz he has the power, the masses do not.

Sorry that was long, but back to Nas... I hope he doesn't think that he is going to take the power away from the word, but still expect White people not to say it. That just never made sense to me. "It's our word" Yea... ok.

  • I think the proof will be in the message. Until we've heard what the album entails, we should back up and wait before we offer our opinions. The fact is, we are all niggers. White folks remind of this on a regular basis when we are about to ascend to a newer height in our professional and sometimes personal lives. We can call it socially irresponsible if we want, but I'll wait and see how he produces it to the public before I make a judgement.

for everyone else... I stand in support of Nas; first because of freedom of speech, second because he is Nas. I don't expect this album to be about partying, nor do I expect an album to be similiar to popular music today. I expect a thought provoking, eye-opening message from a black poet. Personally, I'm looking forward to hear what he has to say. As for being socially responsible, Nas has never been one to do anything to impress, or satisfy anyone. He comes from the heart; you feel it, or you don't. If offense is taken by this title, don't buy it, ignore the entire topic. Fact is, he is well within his rights to express himself. Like he said, it not for everyone, he's sending a message to his people through his eyes.

  • Regardless as to whether his art should be named Nigger or Nigga is not for anyone to judge in this country we do still have the freedom of speech. However everyone is entitled to their own opinion about this album title just like they were entitled to saying their piece about HHID. No it isn't a good idea no matter what for the title just like it isn't good for anyone to say the word of any race color or creed but we say it. Nigger is a horrible word we don't see the prejudice in the word to the degree that our forefathers experience the word so we don't always understand that it should be banned from everyone's vocabulary. I have been called that word before by a prejudice white person and the shit didn't feel good but imagine begin called that in your place of work where u can't take the action that u would normally take. In the same token it is freedom of speech and we say it so freely yeah we flipped it no doubt turned it into a world that is used in our everyday life even in our music but it doesn't make it right. No matter how hard we try to fight for that word being banned it won't be racism is still alive and will never die no matter how hard we try people are going to feel prejudice towards another ethinic background until God presses the reset button and it still might be racism and discrimination. It's like that evil dark side that we all have inside of us buried deep that we hope we never have to bring out but some how some way it reaches the surface to rear it's ugly little head whenever pushed to the boiling point. Discrimination regardless to Nas's ablum ODB or Pac's album is like the evil we have inside of us it will never die it's inevitable. Look at those we shall overcome method's we took in the past yeah it got us somewhere but where are we now damn near back to square one minus the Segregation we all fear what we can't understand this ain't no comic book but was Professor X or Magneto every able to successfully get humans to stop hating and understand mutants no but they faught one by any means the other by trying to help them understand. The mission is possible but not probable.

  • We've had this same dicussion on the NYC Blog last week. But to sum up what I said over there is that the "N" word is going nowhere, in this lifetime.

Us BLACK MEN can get rid of this word, but's it's going to take generations to do so. If you want to get the work started on getting rid of this word, we have to go out and fuck as many white bitches as possible!!!

The main agenda of the Black Cracker Movement is to destroy white supremacy by impregnating as many white women as possible. Once we accomplish this goal, generations from now everyone in the world will be one color, thus making that God-awful word extinct.

Therefore, I urge all you black brothers to join our organization. Even if you do not want to join your organization, please go out and fuck as many white bitches as possible. Please go out and sell drugs in the white community. Please go out and ruin the finances of white females. This is what white people have been doing to black people for hundreds of years. Straight up exploiting up!!!!!

Even the bible agrees with this.

"And eye for and eye, tooth for a tooth"

"Do un to others like they un do to you"

"Pay Caesar (aka the white man) what Caesar is due"

As black men in America it is your duty to fuck the white man over with no Vaseline (no homo)

  • i cant see the videos, but for the 100th time, Who gives a fuck, a word is a word indeed, does it's use set us back to slave days..... only if you living with a slave mentality, i grew up to accept the fact that words and opinions shall not deter my activities in life! If i'm a nigga, i'mma be the best nigga you ever decided to designate the term for, bottom-line!!!!

when you weak-minded, weak shit affects ya.....

if you a strong person and have self-confidence as well as knowing your true self, words honestly are miniscule in the mental-harm department...

so me personally, i'm not about to go ballistic about the word "Nigga/Nigger" no matter who thinks it's wrong.... The 1st Ammendment allows a person to say what they please until they under Miranda.... sure some shit can be harsh when said within a certain context, but fuck it, i live my life thinking on a higher plane...

i've heard rappers call whites Devils, Crackers, Honky's, and such in rhymes, yet they still da ones purchasing a large bulk of overall hip-hop albums sold..... they not holding no "Pro-White" campaigns against Hip-Hop nor do i see these so called activist and social factions protesting those words being eliminated, nor do i see them ridding "Spic", "Chink", or any other racially sensitive words to other ethnicities.....

sure you can slap wrists and say "don't do that" but the end of the day, that 1st Ammendment is still as is, and it allows people to say what they want to say....I respect the Civil Rights Movement and for what it stood for, but after the leaders of that movement died off, the ball has been dropped....

Look at the shit we choosing to focus on, a fuckin word! a word...., all this uproar over a one word album title....

we got monetary donations going overseas while we have an astronomical unemployment rate over here in our own black communities..... i just don't get the priorities and agenda's of some of these dudes that are suspossed to be our "Spokesmen"...

  • Nas using this title is starting to prove just how hypocritcal & contradictive our society is. We have rappers with picture of drugs, guns & money on the cover of their albums & there is never outrage on their covers? Yet alone the majority of these people who disagree probably use the N word amongst their peers. This is not ignorance by Nas, its another genius move by a thought provoking MC. The truth hurts & all he's doing is showing us another vivid example of how racism exists.. Don't judge a book by its cover.

Al Sharpton has to speak against this topic right now because after he got Don Imus fired and then felt it necessary to bring him on a radio show and kick him while he was down all right wing racist began to now target al sharpton and make him go after rappers. As long as i can remember Al Sharpton embrassed hip hop culture and sometimes chastised rapper but now he is gonna sacrifice a few rapper so the white media will back off and he can still be the so called "Leader" of blacks. We are being tricked to fight each other instead of the real issues. Now look at Al act like he is against Barak Obama, 20 years ago if you said a black man had the chances Obama has we would be happy as shit now Al doesnt approve becaue that would be another black man having a position within the community over him. And now Obama is way behind Hilary. I dont give a fuck about a word anymore we done suffered give me some freedom and an equal shot and i will show you what a nigger can do. No other race protests those words Al because they dont mean shit to them they know that they are better than a word. Go ahead make a big deal outta it, make it a hate crime and make us think that we are inferior because whites can hurt us with a fucking work look at the Jena six. • Whats the big deal about the album title. You gonna hear the word nigga on the album countless times anyway. If its such a big deal why is it allowed to be said at all. I say nigga all the time and I've heard it said on every rap album I've every bought. The shit doesn't bother me. It doesn't even bother me if a white person says it Who gives a shit? I'm starting to get offended by people who tell me that I need to be offended. If I can watch SouthPark and hear them say shit, fag, asshole, and all the other shit they say (I do love the show btw), then let that nigga name his album Nigger.

  • I think that Nas KNOWS that this title is not the best idea in the world. But granted, to your hardcore hip hop head, the name of his last album (Hip Hop is Dead for those who've been under a rock) maybe just as offensive, if not borderline blasphemy in their eyes. True "Hip Hop" and the N-word may have totally different pages in history, but as far as sting is concerned, to flat-out tell someone that something they've known all their life is dead and that YOU ("You" being the hip hop community now) killed it (i.e. the joint with Chrisette Michele, entitled "Hope") is as offensive as any racial slur I can think of. But for whatever reason that was acceptable. It's not about making it a term of endearment, or beating up on our own or whatever the f*** Sharpton was talking about this time, it's simply about holding a mirror up to us and saying no matter what we do, no matter how positive a life we make for ourselves THIS is what "they" think of us. T.I. had probably the best two to three years of his life, turned his self in right on this cusp of his success and everything in hopes to possibly start clean. Look where he is. Prodigy is about to do a 3 1/2 year bid and would have done 5 times that if not for copping a plea. These guys are living cache-22 lives; They can't ride around protected because of their priors, but to get caught "slippin'" would be fatal for either one of them, so what are they to do? Wake up folks, this is chess not checkers, and Nas knows this. Ok it's an offensive word...everyone reading this has been through worse, and if you are blessed to live long enough, you will go through worse things than being called the N word. Suck it up and move on. Life is too short.

  • First of all who gives a damn about this in the long run when we have real issues going on, like war, credit/lquidity crisis, presidential elections, and oh yeah, 10 year old boys claiming to be gay on t.v. (That means its ok for ten year old boys to welcome sausage into their butt region...ouch). Anyway, I like the comparison of ODB's historic opus to to Nas' title, the thing is Fox is only making a big deal cause of the O'reily incident, and an even greater truth is that Nas is only naming his album becuase he realized record sales went up for him claiming hip hop was dead so an even more controversial album would sell more....get it...kaching. As for those white jokes on fox, (by the way I am a republican Cuban but these facists on Fox need to bern or get laid...), they should leave discussions regarding artists to artists and conossieurs. We have had numorous paintings and films far more controversial than a record called nigger...really.

  • And how'd Fox get "Rule Rich, Car Heart..." out of "Woolrich, Carhart.."(which are work clothes that cats just started wearing for whatever reason)

    That shows their credibility.

"There's a few hundred people in Philly who died possibly because of inspiration because of songs like that...thank you."

    What a joke.

  • Yeah,
I believe that the use of the N word for an album name is controversial and warrants outrage from many communities (not only the black community and the FOX news bee-yatch community) but the thing is that Nas will NOT BE ABLE TO SELL AN ALBUM WITH THAT NAME, regardless of whether or not Def Jam puts it out. What single would be crack and commercial enough to sell an album called Nigga? You cant justify an album called NIGGA if all the joints on it aren't called : Huey Newton, Black Panther, Nooses up!!! etc. It would have to be a VERY PRO BLACK ALBUM, and unfortunately, that has no place in Wal-Mart or Itunes

  • No one seemed to have a problem with ODB's 'Nigga Please' nor NWA's 'Niggaz4Life' in the 90's....What's so different about Nas' upcoming album title??? Because a cracker like Don Imus broadcasted something racist, did the amendments change? Not from what I heard! Nas isn't gonna just name his album 'Nigga' and leave the meaning empty...I'm copping the album soon as it comes out, not only because he's one of my favorite artists, because I know this will be an album of substance like his past albums.

  • why is everyone so worked up! its just a word. it may be used racially but only the real n****rs use it that way. we as a people need to stop worrying about a word and worry about how we are treated in this so called "FREE NATION". we got people getting gunned down and people getting 25 to life for school fights. and because the corporate bigots want to stir up a little commotion over one of us using a word that they use to define our race people want to jump on the band wagon. i say nas should name it the "N-WORD". he is an intelligent black man
and he will word it in the right manner with a proper message. stop listening to these crackers and support the man. hell, half of america use the word in a non-racist manner. which goes to show that trying to erase the word will not work at all!!! but we as a people have a tendency to make negative words into positive or semi-positive words. which greatly reduces the sting of the words. white people are still gonna keep the word alive so stop trying to abolish the impossible.
