Monday Mayhem: Breezy Brings Ya TWO DOSES of "Dumb It Down"

Posted on October 1, 2007 9:38 AM

Wassup y'all, how ya livin'?!

I know that I've had a helluva crazy weekend, breezing around the East Village. Not only did I see a double-decker tour bus guide that looked JUST LIKE Katt Williams (guess it really IS hard out here for a pimp), but I also was solicited for money by a Hare Krishna in front of a tattoo shop... and encountered a emaciated, Fall Out Boy-looking guy (eyeliner and all) who was on the D Train singing, OUT LOUD.... to J. Holiday's "Bed".

Only in New York, kids. Only in New York.

But enough about me-- let's get into this new Lupe Fiasco joint, "Dumb It Down."

Apparently, he's talking with his hands for all y'all who REALLY need sh*t dumbed down for y'all to get it.

Without his glasses, doesn't he kind of look like that actor, Anthony Mackie?

The reason that I threw this video up here today is because a couple of weeks ago, a reader accused me of not putting anything positive up here. And, I figure, a rapper who doesn't talk-- AND REFUSES-- to saturate his subject matter with bling, drugs and champagne just so people who probably don't even BUY CDs can feel him is pretty damn positive if you ask me.

At least the brother isn't trying to defend a video that depicts him scanning a credit card down a chick's buttcheeks, claiming that "we only focused on the last thirty seconds of the video" (I can't even GO into how stupid Nelly sounded on that Hip Hop vs. America special, but that's neither here nor there).

But I'm feeling you on this one, Lu. Don't let anyone try to box you in. Keep on making your robot and skateboard music, as well as continue to reference kiddie tales like The Headless Horseman (check the lyric "I'm headless like Ichabod Crane is").

ON THE FLIP SIDE...

Another artist named GeeQue also has a song/video entitled "Dumb It Down", that was made some time ago. VERY IMPORTANT: I'm NOT trying to say that Lupe get the idea from him, so don't start instigating anything. However, this video is a lil' more humorous and sarcastic. I LOVE the way he says that "he's strapped"... with waterguns!

Whether you prefer GeeQue's or Lupe's is up to you, but the point that they're making is the same: these days, a rapper doesn't have a hit unless it's about some ignorant sh*t. And this is an all-region wide issue, by the way. I was lying in bed last night really thinking, "when did rapping about slinging drugs become so hot?" I'm sick of hearing about it. On the real, that sh*t is wack as hell. Also, if you were really holding some weight, you're not going to get in a booth and brag about it, because real bad boys move in silence.

Let me know what you think.

WHO LOVES YA, BABY?

  • Gotta respect Lupe for being himself. With his creativity he could front for days about his cars, clothes and women and run circles around most of the dudes. But he stands by his principles and damn he can spit. If you ain't buy the first album, you need to get it for real.

  • What's wrong with sliding a credit card down the crack of a bitches ass. It's better than using money, because money has all types of germs on it. See what happens when you try to do something for someone? You can't win these days

RAP IS NOT SUPPOSED TO RAISE OUR KIDS OR PROVIDE THE MORAL STANDARD FOR THE WORLD.

  • here is some advice for Lupe and all other emcees who feel like the the true depth of their lyricism is not recognized.....

FIRST AND FOREMOST THIS IS MUSIC, SO NO MATTER WHAT YOU SAY ON A RECORD WHETHER IS "CONSCIOUS LYRICS" OR "GANGSTA LYRICS" IT HAS TO BE JAMMING....AS IN RYTHMICALLY JAMMIN TO FEED YOUR SONIC NEEDS.

I DON'T GIVE A FUK HOW FLY YOUR LYRICS ARE OR HOW DEEP YOUR SUBJECT MATTER IS....IF YOU PICKING WACK ASS BEATS AND NOT CREATING A RYTHM IN THE MUSIC THAT WILL CAPTIVATE A LISTENER NO ONE WILL LIKE IT.

THESE DUMB ASS YOUNG RAP NIGGAS NEED TO PEEP THE XCLAN FORMULA. THEY GAVE YOU THE DEEPEST BLACK LYRICISM YOU COULD POSSIBLY GET ALL OVER JAMMING ASS BANGIN BEATS....IF YOU NIGGAS THAT'S MAKIN EXCUSES DO THE SAME YOU WON'T HAVE ANY PROBLEMS

I have enjoyed Common's lyrical skill since he has Common Sense, but the reason I don't purchase his albums is his beat selection....same thang for a lot of the niggas who spit str8 gangsta shyt tooo.....

make some MUSIC and the attention will come

Couldn't agree more. Muthaphuckas need to pick up a book and read if they wanna gather knowledge and direction for their lives...if you're looking for direction from rap music, you's a fucken idiot...its entertainment...damn...I mean diversity in hip hop is great...I'm glad there are Lupe's and Common's and the like but fuck, music is ENTERTAINMENT, not a means of gathering knowledge...again, reading is fundamental!

  • I was laughing while watching both of these videos because they were so true. I'm sick and tired of hearing these repetitive rap songs that all have the same formula: shawty, bitch, hoe, smoke, drink; I got money, cars, etc...
People coming right into the rap game even brag about the girls and stuff they have, and I'm like that is not even realistic. How are you selling your mixtape on the corner but you pop Cristal and have model "bitches" on your arm? GTFOH! Am I telling all rappers to be as deep and lyrical as Lupe, Common, and Mos Def? No! But at least make sense. Talk about your REAL experience in the hood...like how you were so poor you made syrup sandwiches or something like that. Hell, if you didn't have it THAT rough, then just rap about what your life still was about or what you know or have seen. Kanye don't front like he was in the streets selling stuff, but in some of his songs he comments on how some people have to do it. He never says that HE did it, because he knows he was living in the Chicago suburbs.
Tupac really rapped about stuff he knew and saw...Tupac really lived in poverty and his mother was on drugs. Sure he had his party songs where he's talking about women, but he also had songs that were touching about black women. He also tells us about the harsh realities of living in the hood, b/c he actually witnessed these things. Hell, even Biggie had songs about how poor he was, along with his money and women songs. But even he would rap the truth about how money gives you more problems. I used to couldn't stand Eminem, but now, due to the crap on the radio, I appreciate his uniqueness...and I don't think he ever really rapped about his rims and all that, even though he was making more money than the other artists who brag about their money. Now, all I hear is the same, crappy rap formula on the radio, and I turn it from them immediately b/c EVERYONE sounds the same! And it's a NEW rapper every week that sounds almost the same as the last one-hit wonder rapper. Who the hell is going to emerge as a rap legend from these one-note ring tone rappers? Hurricane Chris? Souljah Boy? And I know there are real talented rappers that don't get ever get a record contract, but the record company doesn't care. Now they are treating rap like R&B acts. You know how every few months there is a new light-skinned, long hair, beautiful girl who can hardly sing but has a few hit-singles and then we never hear (or want to hear) from her again? Yet the people who defend this girl's popularity say, "so what? She's FINE and she still gets paid!" Well, these are probably the same people who defend these ringtone rappers by saying, "So what? I don't give a shit what he's talkin' about! That beat was fire! And he still get paid!" Some people don't care about substance, but to each his own, I guess. I personally care about lyrics in rap, beacuse w/o lyrics then who are you? Singers don't have to write their own songs b/c their talent is their voice. Rappers' talent SHOULD be in their lyrics, at least in my opinion. Since I care about the quality of music, I don't even have BET on my television b/c that is a travesty in its own right. Viacom is ruining almost every channel it owns (BET, MTV, VH1), but that is another story. Long story short... I don't care about what the white man thinks of rap (even though they buy most of the records, so I guess the artists better care), but I do care how I, as a black person, feel about the quality of music on the radio, and it is terrible! I'm glad they have oldies and soul R&B music stations b/c my radio would NEVER be on without them.

  • man ain't nothin wrong wit Nelly defending the fact he likes pussy!

shit i like a nice, minimally damaged wet-box, a nice pair of tits (especially), and a fat ass all day........... or well just plump enough to not look like an extension of a females back......

As for the video, all active X shit and flash players are considered "banned" so i can't see neither video,

so in honor of the memory of Ron Mexico, i will keep my post based on my personal visuals for a mental-remix of my version of Nelly's song.."Tit-Drill"

Hey, nothing you can say (say), nothing's gonna change what you've done to me
Now it's time to shine (shine), I'm gonna take what's mine
    Take what's mine

Hey, nothing you can say (say), nothing's gonne change what you've done to me
Now it's time to shine (shine), I'm gonna take what's mine
You're gonna burn in my light

They tried so hard to follow, but no-one cared
Inside you're all so hollow, you understand

Hey, nothing you can say (say), nothing gonna change what you've done to me
Now it's time to shine (shine), I'm gonna take what's mine
While you're burning inside my light

    I gave and you take
And I waited for you but I made a mistake
It's clear that you're fearing so near me
'Cause I see the look on you're face

You tried to hold me under, I held my breath
Alone and now you wonder, what I possess

Hey, nothing you can say (say), nothing's gonna change what you've done to me
Now it's time to shine (shine), you're gonna burn in my light
Hey, nothing you can say, nothing's gonna change what you've done to me

  • How can yall seriously think that hip hop or music period is just entertainment? Yall seriously sound ignorant. Music plays a very big role in our lives, and it does have an effect on the way we think and live. Why do you think Vitamin Water, Pepsi, and other big companies pay music artists so much money to indorse their products. And why do you think that every commercial has a jiggle. Music is very powerful. Hell in some countries music is used as a form of torture. As for the whole Tip Drill fiasco, even though I feel that Nelly was wrong what he did, I also feel that he has the freedom to make whaever kind of video he wants.

  • Apparently you didnt listen to Nelly at all because he made some pretty valid points regarding the whole tip drill incident...That whole situation was blown out of content if you tell me..as he stated it was an adult video that came on at an adult time for adults to watch..Me being an adult i have seen way more mature things than that...so for somebody to say that they were offended by that, in the culture and genre we live in just sounds flat out crazy..Its the 21st century...shit i have saw more shit at the movies
