The White Rapper Show: A Ghetto Revival

Posted on January 10, 2007 11:00 AM

Immediately following "I Love New York" on VH1 is "Ego Trip's White Rapper Show," hosted by MC Serch (of 3rd Bass in case you're too young to know about that).

The very premise of this show bothers me a bit, as I believe we should be serch-ing for quality MCs (i.e. Nas), not merely white MCs. I guess hip-hop needs a bit of affirmative action, huh?

Fuck that. Hip-hop already got on the affirmative action program. Today we have tons of conceptually inferior cacophony flooding the airwaves. The only explanation I can offer for some of these bum asses on the scene is that someone just passed them through grade levels like our public school system.

Don't get it convoluted. I wanna see more talented white folk getting their fair share in the rap game. However, it appears that in MC Serch's personal quest to live vicariously through a rapster not named Eminem he is imposing certain formed elements of street culture on a flock of white folks who more than anything need to follow the immortal creed of one Shawn Carter.

"Just rhyme, homie!"

I must say we have a collective of colorful... um... colorless characters in this one. It kinda pains me that Miss CKC didn't make the cut. I get the feeling we would have been new best friends.

High and tight, y'all!

Bringing 10 white kids to the South Bronx to live? Don't think I don't know what you're doing, Serch. This is "The Gentrification Show" isn't it? 5 seasons in we're gonna wonder where all the negroes went. Grand Concourse gonna look like Park Avenue. We'll have a couple of statues and shit to commemorate the colored trailblazers who suffered through decades of economic exile from the rest of the nation and that will be that. I'll be meeting up with Hip-hop pioneer Shamrock at the Starbucks on 138th and 3rd Avenue. Right across the street from the relocated projects.

Until then, our urban pioneers shall endure simulated squalor. A few of the contestants meet roaches, prison bunks and coloreds for the first time. These damn sure ain't the Flavor of Love/I Love New York digs. Serch said he wanted the surroundings to be indicative of "the essence of hip-hop." I guess he means that said essence is "broke."

I'm confused now. These rappers are on TV tellin me the essence is a tricked-out Denali. Hip-hop needs to make up its mind.

Ego Trip is good for the not-so-cleverly-veiled inuendo. The contestants are to receive their daily announcements from MC Serch's pasty face through a mayonnaise jar console. Our heroes depart from "Tha White House" to rap for real-live SoBo (*takes a vomit break*) residents with gift bags full of "I Love White Rappers" t-shirts and... saltine crackers.

So far, I'm actually impressed with a couple of these rapsters. Shamrock has the "it" factor. Yes, he looks like someone shoved a ski-pole through his face, but dude can rap and has a confident, genuine swagger. Persia is a beast. She reminds me of a white Lady Luck. That's my nigga right there. (pun intended)

Persia exercized her gully early by attacking potential Poser Mobile award nominee John "King of the Burbs" Brown. I don't know where she keeps them, but it takes huevos rancheros to wave a synthetic dick in a man's face, lay it on his lips and call him a bitch nigga. Yes, this is a fair representation of white girls from Far Rock.

Her punishment for her n-word use? Large heavy shackles surely intended to give black viewers genetic memory flashbacks attached to a millstone-sized plaque that says "N-Word."

So you want them to be niggas... but the show's cardinal offense is to say the word? Again, I'm confused.

I'm gonna give this show another chance. I generally love Ego Trip's shit. I would hope the series' lessons and intentions become clearer as we progress. Are you looking for rappers or adopted ghetto folk, Serch? They are not one and the same.

White rapper show reject Dasit blasts show, signs multi-million dollar deal, says, “I would Murder [Search] in a battle

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiit! By the looks of things the folks at VH1 done found somebody new to clown. In case you’ve missed it, “The White Rapper Show” has ten white rappers competing for 100 k and “respect” as MC Serch calls it. Respect? Come on, dude! When is the last time ya’ll heard of Babs from Making Da Band? And she won the joint. In fairness, some of the contestants ain’t half wack. But this here seems to be all in the name of accidental comedy, not music.

The first episode’s highlight is undoubtedly Persia putting a dildo up in John “King of the Burbz” Brown’s face before having the nerve to ask him if he was “a real nigga.” I usually don’t hit women unless I’m beating it up, but I wish a broad would put a dildo up my face and then have the nerve to call me a nigga. Shit, Persia looks like she could handle a couple of my uppercuts. I may have to throw in a couple of right hooks. I would have @$%$$#$^&$%$! that ass! Well, you know what, I’ll wait until I interview Persia to roast her. Hope you ain’t scared, baby.

Episode 1 concluded with Dasit refusing to write a short verse during the elimination round. Obviously, he got kicked out. A day after the show’s premier, I caught up with Dasit to discuss his elimination, his multi-million dollar deal, Hammer and murdering MC Search.

DJ: So you said that you had problem writing to the beat or something.

Dasit: Every time we tried to play the music, the producers come out and say, “can’t play the music.” That morning of elimination, I came back after a three hour interview, I was hype as hell, put the beat on, I started playing the beat and the producer came out and said, “you can’t listen to it, man.” I just put my notebook down I was like, “you know what, fuck this, man. This is stupid.” I’m trying to make songs and do something about music. This show is all about drama and making fun of white rappers and act like we’re all from the suburbs or something. It’s like come, man you wanna see the next big white rapper or what?

DJ: So, that was more about principles, that wasn’t you not being able to write without a beat?
Dasit: Nah, and that’s what I wanna get a chance to explain. See the way they kinda edited and made it seem like I didn’t know how to do it. It wasn’t about that.

DJ: But going in, did you feel good about the competition?
Dasit: I already had a record deal when I went on the show. I had a record deal with MC Hammer for the last two years. You know where I’m from Toledo, OH , which is only 45 minutes away from Detroit. I put my first single out in 96 and so did Em. And I was doing way bigger things out here that he was doing. He just got heard before I did. So everybody thinks I sound like him which is just a stereotype, but I’ve been putting out shit just as long as that dude. I went into it, not really worrying about the money. I was like, you know what I’m just gonna get into it and hope it ain’t corny. I went into the competition positive and hoping that it would be something cool, but when you go into it, you don’t know what the challenges are gonna be cause you’re not supposed to know. You don’t know anything.

DJ: You’re talking about being clowned on the show, but weren’t you worried that you weren’t gonna be taken seriously being down with Hammer?
Dasit: Yeah. I always worried about that. But with me, I got compared to Em for so long. As soon as he came out, people were like, “oh, man. Dasit sounds just like Em.” Just cause our voices are similar. So I’ve had the stereotypes on me, man since day one. I remember being compared to Vanilla Ice back in the day, even back in 91 when I started rapping. So I’m used to the stereotypes, but I got with Hammer because I saw an opportunity. Labels weren’t signing white rappers. When you think about it, the whole time Em was out, only one other white rapper got signed and that was only Bubba Sparxxx cause Timbaland was doing it. Hammer got stereotypes, but he sold 30 million records. He did a lot of stuff that culture embraces now. He made the money first.

I got kinda used to it not even worrying about what people say. Look at what I was wearing. I only wear that for an image thing. I get compared to Em, so I try to be someone totally opposite. I’m like, you know what…I look like a fool when I wear that. I don’t even wear glasses. They don’t even have lenses in them. I just wear that just because I wanna get your attention. And that’s what it did, it got me on the show because they even said it, they like my fashion sense.

DJ: You said you signed a million dollar deal two weeks ago.
Dasit: Here’s what’s happening. I’m putting it out there, but I’m in the middle still of getting out of my deal. Hammer is still being kinda shady even though we’re still friends. He ain’t do nothing with me. When I got on his label he told me he would put my album out. Actually, I’m a put this out here right now. When I first signed to his label, he wanted me to do a diss song on Eminem and he wanted me to do a diss song on Jay-Z. I don’t know why, but that’s what he said when he first wanted to sign me. Only a couple of weeks ago, I found a wealthy investor from around my part. I mean, it’s not even a million dollar deal, it’s a multi-million dollar deal. The dude is gonna get me enough money to …I’ll have the best album. I know Scott Storch. To me it’s not about being racist, but…just like you know how black people are proud when they do something good? There weren’t that many white producers besides Rick Rubin, so I’d love to see… if me and Storch get together that’s white on white crime right there. I’ll get enough money to run my own label and this dude will just give me the label to do it.

DJ: Dudes said that they felt bad for Misfit because everybody would try to holla when they’re drunk. Was Persia an option?
Dasit: Hell no, she wasn’t no option, dawg? Did you see what she looks like? She’s a cool girl, but I don’t like big girls. I wasn’t gonna get that lonely.

DJ: Let me ask you this, Dasit vs MC Serch circa 1988, who would win the battle?
Dasit:[Editor’s Note: Serch didn’t feel he should bother answering the same question] I’ll murder that dude. This is what’s funny about Search. As hard as he ever wants to be, the biggest song he ever came out with was a pop song making fun of pop artists. He was making fun of Vanilla Ice and Mc Hammer. And then the dude was so damn scared when Hammer tried to put a hit out on him cause he talked about his momma. Man, that dude was so scared. But yeah, I’ll murder that dude. That dude only has half my skills. I never talk shit my whole career, but right now. I’ma be in the studio with the big producers and I’ma put it down. Ain’t gon be no Eminem shit, it’s gon be Dasit shit.

DJ: At the end Search was really going off, would you say he dramatized for the cameras?
Dasit: I don’t think he went overboard, I think dude was so flustered. He didn’t know what to do. What you didn’t see was…I took a step forward. As soon as I took a step forward, the dude walked off the set for like a half hour. See he was trying to act like he was gonna smack me in my face. I seen it on Vspot today. He was like, “oh I wanted to smack Dasit.” When he came back to me after 30 minutes he said the nicest things to me in the world, dude. He was like Dasit, “I’m just really disappointed with you. You had the look, you had the flow, you had the style. I just wish you would have flowed something. I’m just disappointed. I was on that microphone where you can hear everything. I was on that and Misfit was like “, I can’t believe he talked that much shit to you.” I was like, if this dude comes back here says one more thing to me, I’ma punch this dude in the motherfucking mouth. I was like, “this dude says one more thing, I’m fucking this dude up.” I mean, I don’t give a shit. You ain’t gon disrespect me. I ain’t gon be looking like a punk. I was trying to do it respectfully, honestly. But when he came at me like that. I flustered big time.

As for the chick that got all in his face, I look at here as being wack. I mean she had a lil spit game, but her swag and how obnoxious she was took away from her shine she had.

  • that was the best blog you have ever wrote, for real. When you combine humor with the many poltical hypocrisies of a show like this it makes for convincing and poignant writing. Personally I don't like the show and I find it a bit more offesnive than funny. Althought Shamrock and the tall kid who is still in school seemly oddly down to earth for reality TV, and that one girl is just crazy fine.

  • Its deep. I look at this show as pure comedy! I find it hard to take seriously, although I been a fan of Serch since "Steppin To Tha AM".

I was hoping Prince Paul would have more of a role in the show as well. Hopefully the will bring him back.

And how come all of these reality shows gotta have a moment where the tough head (in this case, Persia) breaks down? Maybe they were tryin to woo the black folk wit that one?

Im checkin for the 2nd episode. But then again, I loved Flavor of Love. Maybe I'm just easily entertained.

Damn, that just MIGHT be a shame.

  • I think this show is just for rating. White people love to see white people infultrate black culture i.e. justin timberlake. i do think that search takes this show very seriously, i gained alot of respect for him when he when off on the necktie dude for not taking shit seriously. he looked like he was about to beat dude ass.

Persia IS a beast, she's my favorite. i'd probably even fuck if she lost a ton or two. John Brown is the real life "Malibu's Most Wanted". His chance of a rap career was done when:

    1. he didn't battle
    2. he didn't battle a female
    3. "ghetto revival"
    4. he didn't have any comebacks when his bitch card got pulled
    5. a big brown dildo on his lips
    6. his eyes being so close together

but the positive that can come from this show is it does break the hiphop culture down into it's bare components, which is the art, and not cribs, rims and hoes. maybe those white people that actually pay attention will understand more about hiphop than what they see on videos.

  • The White Rapper Show.........Sigh
    So,

I checked out the White Rapper Show on VH1 last night (and the encore, just to make sure I wasn't being biased the first time) and to say that I was dissapointed would be a complete understatement.

Who allowed this bullshit show to be put on a credible network? The premise is 10 white rappers (and I say that loosely, a few of them looked Hispanic) are picked by MC Serch to live in the South Bronx, and have their lives taped. To find out happens when people stop being polite, and start getting real, look no further than one of the female rappers shoving a dildo in the face of one of the male contestants. Cute.

Anyways, these white rappers are put through different tests, the first being to walk down a neighborhood in the South Bronx, and give the residents a taste of their lyrical skill. In the mix you have Paul Wall's stunt double, an idiot from the suburbs who's trying to bring the hood back, Steve Urkel's white cousin, and the lead singer of (Insert Death Metal Band Here). You know what, I could care less if these cats wanna rap, good for them if they do. Hip hop has broken soooo many barriers, and connected people not only in this country, but the world. Hip hop is one of the few functinal entities still left in our generation. i don't feel like its dead, as Nas says, but it is on life support. The main problem is the constant, blatant misuse and exploitation of it, and this show is a perfect example. First Kevin Federline drops an albulm, and then this bullshit. Myself, a white rapper, singer, musician, has a BIG problem with this show, and moreso because of who is producing it and starring in it. MC Serch, shame on you, you should have known better. There are people my age and younger who have no clue who you are, and what your place in Hip Hop is. All this show will do is make them think what I myself had confirmed long ago, that you are a complete joke. Pop goes the weasel.

If that's what you want, cool, go ahead, this is your legacy to all the 90's babies. If you want to send out contestants with saltine's in their gift bags for South Bronx neighbors (because they are crackers, get it, insert Peter Griffin laugh) and have a mayonnaise jar in the living room of their apartment, do your thing. As long as you understand that whoever wins this "Show" will have no career to speak of. the main reason being, there is no credibility. We need more great rappers PERIOD, not just white ones. Why waste a chance to actually bring a show to a main network about finding the next great lyricist on such a bullshit, gimmicky concept. there haven't been enough white rappers that have actually done something positive for the culture. Why try to cut corner's and make a show about finding the next Eminem? What about the next Rakim, Nas, Jay-Z, Tupac, the next pioneer of this music that so many of us love, and relate to? Thats more important than anything. The fact that some of these dudes impressed me lyrically doesn't matter, because the show itself is so idiotic. I will continue to watch the show, only out of morbid curiousity, and the hope that I will be able to recant everything I wrote in this blog. Until Then...........

Hip-Hop just died this morning, and she's dead.......she's dead.....

  • Dasit is really good, and I could tell that his dismissal was strategically video edited.

If his record deal is as true as he claims, I wish him the best of luck. He was one of the two real rappers I saw on the show.

The show itself is a horrendous mockery of hip-hop, if not a slap in the face...it's like callin' Blacks a nigger because they're making these white contestants to live "hip-hop" when true hip-hop is instilled in a person since one's humbles beginnings not forced upon them.

How did MC Serch get the hosting gig? He's no real rapper to take seriously. People only remember his song "Pop Goes The Weasel." If one doesn't know the lyrics or the content of the song, the title explains how corny 3rd Bass was.

And the "A" stays IN from this moment on. Miss ckc is MY new best friend and she was my new ringtone, then you came back and had me at cacophony.
I spelled that today in my Honda Civic.

  • The show was racist towards white rappers. MC Serch says hip hop is about unity but look at the way he treated the white race. He dehumanized white rappers maybe because he is not really white but Jewish. Why didn't he do a show about Jewish rappers? His skills are pathetic. Do like Pete Nice and give it up Serch!
