Nas - "Hip Hop Is Dead" video

Posted on December 20, 2006 9:57 AM

What do hip-hop and Talkin Videos have in common? They’s some dead motherfuckers.

Hmmm. I was annoyed by the comments not working at first, but shit… This is kinda peaceful. No dumb-asses tombout “FIRST! LOVE ME!” No square ass bitches telling me I should massage Young Jeezy’s balls or some punk shit… etc. Unfortunately, there’s also no love hate from you guys, which is my favorite thing about this blog.

Oh yeah… It’s Nas week. So let’s finally talk about his “Hip Hop is Dead” video. [watch above]

Seriously though. If you’re still reading along even though you can’t participate for the time being, Ronaldinho is honored.

Roll in every station. Murder the DJ. I tell you what, there’s a loooong list of so-called disc jockeys that need to be at least pistol-whipped within an ounce of consciousness. I don’t blame DJs en masse for hip-hop going to shit. They are merely a single element of the culture. However, they are the last line of defense and for the most part, they have run screaming from the frontline.

Ultimately they are supposed to play what the people want, but who the fuck can tell what the people want or not when 7 out of 10 records they spin came with a duffel bag of cash? What came first? The chickenhead DJ or the egg-fart record?

I feel like NYPD is already hemming us up for being hip-hop listeners. All the police have ever found on my person are walkmans, mp3 players and testicles as smooth as eggs. The only ever probable cause has been jeans, sneakers, hoodies, fitted caps and melanin. Hip-hop’s been under attack for a long time, my friends. While it can’t be abolished on paper, they can kill it the way they do everything else in our community... Slowly and quietly picking at the foundation and letting yet another confused generation of niggers do the rest themselves.

As much as I appreciate and even borderline agree with the sentiment, this video is highly contrived. At the same time, I only wish we would fight for our music this way. Memory cards are black tops. CDs are them blue jumps. Though he’s trying to Guevara himself to death, once again Nasir Jones is Escobar and heading an imaginary crime syndicate. Does Nas really have to drive the message home this way?

I guess we gotta feed niggas what they understand. Lessons always go over better with street corner application. I can't act like I don't remember how I learned to count.
