De La Soul - "Stakes Is High" video

Posted on September 14, 2006 10:16 AM

Happy Thursday to you Vans-wearin motherfucks out thurr.

de-la-improved.jpg

In 1996, as we neared the pinnacle of rap jigginess, the hip-hop community (whatever that means) was dickslapped with a much-needed dose of what we now like to call "real talk" that only De La Soul could have provided. (whew!) "Stakes Is High," [watch it now] the title track of said dickslap, names no mames but pulls no punches. They even got Maury down for the cause.

"Gun Control means using both hands in my land." I'm still haunted by that.

DJ Sop Sound... you are NOT the father!

It's a damn shame that 10 years later Maury Povich and his program are now a symbol of all things deplorable and ignorant in Black American culture. At least back then he was doin boot camp and shit. Now that show is the one-stop paternity suit program. I guess this was when homie still meant well... or wanted shit to appear as such.

I like videos with laundromat shots. I can't call it. There's something so very human about washing clothes. You see a nigga doing laundry, you're reminded that (s)he is puts her/his drawers on one leg at a time like you do. You also get to see that they use Gain like you do... unless you're from where I'm from and had to fuck with that dollar box of Trend and the Nice 'N Fluffy fabric softener that always found a way to clump and stick to your gear.

The cameos were cool. Of course, gotta have Native Tongues family ATCQ in the jawn. I like how Jerry Stackhouse is in this video doing what he does best... getting inexplicably horsed on defense. That looks about right. I don't think he could even defend a 40-something year-old Posdnous.

Plug 2 on the mechanical bull is quite a spectacle. Obviously intentionally so, but damn... still strange to look at. They should have a size limit on them things. That's a lot of man that could fall on a tiny isthmus of a neck. That's why I ain't never been on one of them things. If I caught a Christopher Reeve, you'd see Ron Mexico go Super-Saiyan 4. I'd be Ronald S. Thompson in the snap of a finger... or a neck... or whatever.

As dope as this shit was (song/video/album), I wish they'd made a video for "Da Bizness" with Common. That jawn hard as hell, holmes.

Take some time to reflect on what this song is about. These dudes say what I've been tellin you for well over a year... they're just relatively nice about it. I guess that approach is cool from time to time... or something like that.

  • Yeah I remember when this came out and then the Cella Dwellas had a video real similar to this one and I was hatin', like how you you gonna blatanly bite De La's video and shit.

But man this takes me back to Old School Rap City w/ Joe Clair & Big Lez when it was 2 hours and you actually saw new videos everyday, not new videos by new artists, but new and original videos that you might only catch once a week and would be Jonsin' for next go around, like GZA's 4th Chamber/Shadowboxing video, just like this one here...Classic shit.

  • Honestly, Hip Hop has opened my eyes to the truth about life. Fo real, have y'all noticed that the most negative elements have become the most commercially successful, eg pushing drugs, promiscuity, criminal activity, etc. I agree fully with the Holy BIBLE, we r definitely living the last days, expect the antichrist any time soon ...lol. Real positive music is not appreciated, anyways some of us know the truth and that's all that really matters, DE LA SOUL 4 life!!!!!

  • This reminds me of the good ol' days.
Downing St. Ides 40's. Hennessy and Alize. Twistin up with the original White Owls. Rockin the (I know some might trip), Tommy Hilfiger, Polo, and Nautica gear with matching Wallabees. Video taping the videos from the good ol' Rap City. Reading Source, Murderdog, and Rap Pages.

In that era it seemed to me every coast was holding their own. To me it wasn't that East vs. South shit niggas trying to create now.

    Bone Thugs held the Mid-west.
Wu-Tang, B.I.G, The Fugees, Boot Camp and various others held the East.
Pac and Deathrow had everybody checkin out west.
The Dungeon Family, Rap-A-Lot, and Suave House held down the Dirty South

I could go on, like Pac said....."It Ain't Nothing Like The Old School."

Ditto! In the history of hip hop, I think that the year this video drop is the best ever. Itsoweezzee is another great joint. Damn bring back 1996!! You had great music from everywhere. West Coast (Bow Down), South (Atliens, Geto Boys Reunion), East (De La, Nas, Jay, Fugees) & Mid West(Bone, Crucial Conflict)I've never rapped, but I feel what KRS & all other hip hop purists feel. It is sad what passes for hip hop these days. Lets keep the classics alive though.

And Cella Dwellas was tight, but I was just talking about the video concept. And y'all niggaz forgot about the Dogg Pound, Do or Die & the muthafuckin' Boot Camp Click in the headz running '96. OGC had just dropped The Storm and Smif & Wess(Cocoa B'z) dropped their follow-up as well as the whole BCC album, which still gets knocked to this day...watch for the Ocheedoke.

  • @ REAL TALK

That has to be post of the day.

The thing is that the studio gangsters that you speak of are wannabe's who are supported by wannabe consumers. All the garbage in Hip Hop today is art reflecting life in the sense that the attitude of being trendy and looking the part are more important than actually knowing what you're talking about in society as well as music.

As long as people can underacheive and respond to constructive criticism with "you hatin" the bar will never be raised again. As long as democracy in this country continues to evolve into formulating a concensus of opinion instead of a meeting of differing opinions, the music that reflects our society will continue to be filled with clones.
