Remember these cats?
Long before going cotton candy pop in hip-hop had become the pandemic that it is today, EPMD had 4 eyes on the trend. 1992's "Crossover" [watch it now] was like MC conditioner. I never thought these boys to be amateur. Man, maybe if our artists dished out more media chin-checks like this one, we wouldn't have completely lost the music of the movement.

Concerning the wraparound premise of this video... Can anyone say "Dre Day?" Damn, somebody drew inspiration from the Def Jam boys, huh? Slap Jerry Heller in that seat and A.J. "Eazel/Eazy-E" Johnson in the other, and we've got a good, old-fashioned, passionate ass-whoopin'. Right, Buttnaked Tim Dawg? Somebody buy Tim Dawg a 40 for his birthday.
EPMD... Everything Kid 'N Play should have been. Maybe if they'd met each other halfway, we'd have had an early G-Unit. Strangely enough, Mobb Deep wasn't too far behind despite the fact that they were like 15 when this shit came out.
Parrish Smith looks like the Mr. Hard Rock nigga on your block who cracked a 40 bottle over the dopeman's head. Erick Sermon looks like Ms. New Smoker who got caught off guard by how excellent the base was and tried to give the dopeman head.

This will always bel one of my favorite songs, but I got a question for PMD. "From the U.S. to the white cliffs of Dover./" Isn't Dover in Delaware? Isn't Dover the capital city of said state? Isn't said state one of the United States? Isn't U.S. short for United States? Slow down in the Jag' you lawwsssst me!
Gotta love the cameos! Redman, K-Solo, Das EFX... Kid Capri lookin like he was 40 back then. Hit Squad... That shit could have been something special. Had they kept shit tight and still made that Keith Murray pick up, things could be very different for all of them.
How can you front on some shit where niggas is poppin and breakin in one of the many abandoned lots of that era? This is back when hoods in NY used to look like Afghanistan... bombed out and depleted. Developers have left no project brick unturned.
This shit is deliciously grimy. This video represents what the city used to feel like. It represents what hip-hop used to feel like. There's a reason why I can't bring myself to watch The Negro Channel and MTV anymore. Yeah, shit was greasy then, but the struggle was beautiful. This was one of the first (and best) uses of that rotating camera shot too. I'd have to say that shit was most innovatively executed in Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz' "Deja Vu (Uptown, Baby!)"

For Streets: Erick drove a Suzuki Samurai, and Parrish drove the Corvette in "Strictly Business" on their first album, Strictly Business. That's because, for whatever reason back then, cats loved Samurais (flipmobiles) and Geo Trackers when they first came out. It ain't Parrish fault if E wanted to buy it! Plus, when they did "Unfinished Business", on "Knick Knack Patty Wack" with K-Solo, they had changed cars:

EPMD is undoubtedly the most underrated duo in all of hip hop. They were around when hip-hop's New Generation took off in the 80s, when Long Island started making a name for themselves:EPMD, Rakim, PE, JVC Force, De La Soul. Every song on their first album was got radio play. The Hit Squad:had they stayed intact, and with Keith Murray, would have been ill. Don't know how long they would have lasted, with Das' elementary cartoon rhyming styles, and K Solo's spelling.
"Crossover" was a crazy, dark video that cats back then was fiending for before it was released, and "Headbanger" was just as ill-that was their peak. Thank goodness for hip hop back then

I'm too young to remember when this video first came out but I peeped it on an episode of Rap City (that's Canada's bootleg version of Yo MTV Raps!) when I was in 7th grade.
I loved it! EPMD were on of the best duos ever. Plus they brought us Redman, Keith Murray, and Das EFX.

I co-sign J Fresh, this is the best blog hands down...it's refreshing, especially after the last 26,472 wack ass blogs on this site. This shit taking me back to the days of Yo MTV Raps & Pump it Up w. Dee Barnes. Nine's first album was a classic...I remember when I had my 1st hooptie I used to bang that cassette in the tapedeck.
Remember on "Give the People" Parrish said something like "Lets wisen up quick/If we don't, rap will be run by politics"...and just look at the game now with DJs takin payola and shit like that.

Remember in 1986-7 when they were droppin hooks and flows that could make it today other cats were still "yes yes yallin" and rockin da mic viciously to the beat yall. DEF TOP FIVE all time. i mean they even had an MC Sheriff who was Down by Law.... ha hahaha.
Don't get me wrong...I'm a big Erick fan. Been down with EPMD since "It's My Thing" first was out on single, BEFORE the Strictly Business album dropped. BUT...90% of the beats until Business Never Personal came out, was done by Parrish. Parrish actually has done a lot of beats and has basically got little or no credit. Parrish did ALL those early hot ass beats. AND...yeah...if they didn't split, they would have had a fuckin' rap EMPIRE. Oh well I guess...that's business...never personal.
