Lupe Fiasco - "Kick Push"

Posted on April 25, 2006 12:00 AM

Temporary Preface: I'm hard on Ashlee Simpson and dumb birds like that, but Julissa has to be the worst out. I know it's The Negro Channel, but damn, you can do better than THAT, right? "Oooh! Food, Liquor, Clothes, Cuchifritos and Skeet! I LOVE that!"

No, nigga. You weren't the only motherfucker that thought this song would be about delivering a baby when you saw the title. Lupe Fiasco's re-introduction to the world (after Kanye's "Touch The Sky" Hepatitis Exchange with Pamela Anderson) is his ghetto-skate-rock anthem "Kick Push." [watch it now]

I'm going to be really nice to him and his video. So before I do that, I'm going to make Lupe Fiasco feel nice and welcome here at Talkin' Videos.

This nigga looks like a burnt-up caterpillar... with glasses. A bookworm. Yeah, that's it. A bookworm in a library fire. You put one of them roman coliseum Caesar helmets on him and he looks like Marvin The Martian.

Lupe Fiasco also looks kinda like Cassidy... if prison went really badly for him. Tobias Beecher Cassidy. He could tell you all about Adebisi askin him if he wanted to come to his hotel. Yep, he looks fresh out of prison... or maybe fresh out of Africa. Shit, both are places niggas ain't really tryin to go.

I like the grinding metaphor a lot. So simple, yet so pertinent. I think the video as a whole is excellent. It's well-shot, thoughtful, brave and honest; shit hip-hop is desperately missing in its videos. It doesn't hurt any that Lupe Fiasco is quickly becoming one of my favorite rappers. His Dead Presidents drop is disgusting. If only he had a better voice, I'd say he'd already be deemed one of the next greats. He also may have doomed himself by dressing up like Eddie Kendricks in a Kanye West video. (No, dressing up like Eddie Kendricks is never a good thing.)

There wasn't really a big skater culture in Harlem. Even when skating was hot. Plus, I bust my ass something awful when I tried to skateboard. That was it for me. However, I can relate to being turned away. Bars in New York still use the paper bag test, and Ron Mexico, Danny Glover and Denzel Washington can't catch cabs home after a long night of dancing with white girls to Beyonce songs. (We'll get into that a little later.)

P.S.: The remix for this song with Pharrell on it is fucking filthy.

That joint was aight. Nice beat, video was cool, had that laid back/ back-in-da-day feelin. I haven't realy fucked with Lupe like that but might have to check out some more of his shit. He does look a little geeky, but that's the point. That shit shoudn't matter if he got skills.

  • This kid definitely looks like Cassidy's skater boy twin from the Chi. I like him as a rapper though and the video is definitely vintage hip-hop, each verse plays out his rhymes so dumbs folks can follow with ease. A rapper with real specs seems geeky but I'm glad he has a lane in the game and skills to back it up. Did you peep how he bust out a trick at the end of the video. WOW!! Lupe and Skateboard P are match made in skater Heaven.

I KNOW that was directed at me. That was the first thought in my head.

Speaking of Pharrell...that nigga looks like a dark skinned version of "Skateboard P"...

PS: Poor Julissa...I guess she replaced AJ as being the "overly wholesome and stupid" one.

  • If you skate, like I do, then this video is a ball of emotions that you understand completely. The cops in Philly are dickheads when anyone tries to enjoy a session in a "no skate zone". I just got chased out of Love Park last night around 12:30pm.

He makes theme music. Something I can listen to while skating or tagging a wall.

  • Hey Dj Rip, I'm from Chi, and we ain't got no sound so what you talkin' about?

You said we from the Mid-West not the East, so then what do you define as the midwest sound or style of rap? Nelly? Eminem? Bone? Twista? All of them is from the Mid-West and they all sound different so what are you saying? Bottom line is the Mid-West is just that, in the middle. Therefore you can hear all different kinds of shit from here and if you a Dj from Chi I'm sure you know that already.

So what should a Chi-Town artist sound like dog?

You crazy as hell, white boy skateboarders listen to more REAL HIP HOP than we do. We listen to bullshit about hustlers, thugs, cars, bling and hoes, and they still listening that underground backpacker shit, with concepts, lyrics and dark gothic beats.

Niggas voting for it cause it's a breath of fresh air for hip hop. We yearn for something different and he is providing that. Thing is, it's a lot of different artist out there but the labels are to busy looking for the next 50 Cent. They lookin for the next super thug, killa, dope dealer that has been locked up and shot up. Jay-Z endorsed him so labels wanted to take a chance. Between, Kanye, Common, and Lupe, Chicago is bringin that real shit back slowly but surely.

  • Nice video, and I think we a lot of people are excited for the kid to drop. It seems like the pendulum is swinging back away from the ridiculously gangsta music and I'm happy about that.

I hope he still puts his album out, even though it leaked early. The hype is there, add the guest spots and throw a couple of new songs and it will be good.

  • I co-sign with all the positive comments bout this dude. This is my first time hearing him, after reading about his ass so much and I must say, it brings me back to 95’ when there was music a nigga can lay back listen and smoke to. I might have to cop his cd and a half ounce. I’m out. I hope these young kids take a lesson from him and just be yourself. I’m tired of seeing the same doorag, cornroll, lil wayne wnna be thugs out here, be your fuckin self like ya boy lupe. I ain’t no skateboarder but I respect him for being man enough to be a skateboarder cuz It’s what he loves.

  • Lupe is decent, he got flow, and as long as he doesn't turn into somebody who sucks his own dick like Kanye, then power to him. I dont think he's as incredible as people make him out to be, but he's definitly good. I like the skateboard idea, at least it's something new and fresh instead of selling crack and fuckin bitches and shootin people.

  • Dj Rip,

Ok you named DOD, CC, Psycho Drama, Snypaz, but that shit is dead dog. Crucial may still have some life left in them just off they stage presence alone but the rest of them cats is over. My question was what is Chi-Town's sound now meaning today? And it can't be them cats up there cause they are finished.

When Twista first came out if he didn't say he was from Chicago you'da thought he was from the east and you mentioned him. He was rappin like Treach and the Fu-Shnickins. My point is we ain't got our own sound and until we do (which, geographically will be never) we all need to support our Chi-Town groups if they some good and getting major buzz no matter what they sound is. I think Bump J was wack but if the world wanted him I was rollin'. I think S.A.W. is SUPER WACK, but if the world followed they movement, fuck it.

  • Dummies, dummies , dummies... You can tell who is either an Old Cat=loves Lupe because it reminds them of the good old days a la Rakim, Nas, Jay, KRS, Puba etc etc (in a cashmere sweater).., or a New Jack aka internet thug aka 'I can't spell!' aka 'I stabbed your moms!' aka 'honest I like um did a three day bid??' aka 'aww shut the f up beeeyatch!' *cops the Lupe bootleg, listens and looks angrily at his 2 dollar speakers and gives them a swift kick and hollers 'Fuck that I want My Jeezy, drugs, guns and thug niggs back!!'* and then? Well then there is just us...dudes that played hard in the streets, listened to the sounds of imminent defeat, payed heed, got creative, got educated, stayed hard enough to still be rated as stand-up (although it used to be stick-up) kids, no more nearly bids, moved out of the streets but still enjoying the the real beats (Lupe!), rhythmic, reality soundbites and sometimes elgiac rhymes of the night that celebrate our lives...while the white/black kids on the boards get it because its mostly the melody, then the lyrics and then the voice.. and you?

Mostly I do not post. Just Laugh. Lupe is no joke. Kid is the truth. Shout out to my mans R Meezy, your insights are still kicking like the real Ronaldo or should that be Ronaldinho?? LOL at the confused dudes reading and getting all mad...
