First off, I’d like to say a formal goodbye to Proof. I ask for a moment of silence if you could spare it.
This song and video are too damn ironic for my liking right now. However, this is one request that I will honor immediately. In memory of Proof’s life and work, we’ll watch Eminem’s “Like Toy Soldiers” [watch above] together.
Sadly enough, word is that the beef that took Proof from us may have been rap-related. That compounds my sadness exponentially. To think that something once so pure and lovely as the music of our culture could take lives this way is mind-numbing and makes me sick to my stomach.
Toy Soldiers. What a colorful term for the phenomenon, huh?
Eminem gets his point across about his artists. Even more important, however, are the listeners. We are the ones who are called to action by what we hear. Biggie and 2Pac were able to take a personal squabble nationwide. One mention of his daughter sent Eminem into a rage the likes of which we’ve never seen from an artist that usually invokes his lyrics to incite the masses. 50 Cent used his fan base to blacklist Ja Rule almost entirely.
The toy soldiers aren’t just behind the microphone waiting for checks from Tommy Mottola. They’re sitting in front of their computer screens right now looking for something to be angry at. They scour media outlets ready to rush to the defense of their favorite recording artists. Many take their enlistment far more seriously than they should.
Something’s got to give. That’s why we do what we do here. These lyrics ARE powerful. This imagery IS “that serious.” Once again we've been deceived into underestimating our own power. Now, it's being used against us as a people. I wholeheartedly thank the select few of you that see through the jokes and truly understand that we’re trying to do something special for our culture here.
Proof, we miss you already.
Regardless of what you thought of his music, this is another brother we’ve lost… and quite likely over some dumb shit surrounding a culture that we should be in control of. Let’s take some action and responsibility as listeners. Let Proof not have died in vain.
My condolences and best wishes go to his family and friends.

A highly underrated and highly respected MC who did his best to use his fame to help others. From a man who left an lasting impression on everybody he came into contact to, to someone who repped this hip-hop culture to the fullest, a HUGE void is now left to be filled, especially in the Detroit hip-hop scene. People forget that this hip-hop of ours was started to avoid all of the violence that is/was happening on the streets, but now especially with the commercially dominated "Gangsta" rap, it is spilling once again over into the music. If we don't use this art form to push positivity into the minds of our youth then it is a never ending cycle. Proof was vital in trying to empower people through the music to focus your talents on the lighter side of life.
I got family in the D now and they have said it really has been crazy for the past couple of years, kinda like it is in LA right now, just senseless violence and killing. Can anybody from Detroit comment on that - WHAT IS HAPPENING ON THE STREETS RIGHT NOW THAT KEEPS THIS VIOLENCE GOING?
And please everyone remember that besides being a respected performer, this was a MAN who had 5 KIDS THAT LOST THEIR FATHER in a way TOO many of us are familiar with. Keep his family in our hearts and prayers.

first off RIP to Proof, i knew him personally and he was a very cool down to earth person i will miss him dearly...not on the other hand for the person who wanted a comment from someone who lived in detroit...detroit is your typical big city. everyone who thinks detroit is very violent...its not that is jjust what the media portrays...they always show the grimiest neighborhoods and anything that happens in detroit or surrounding cities is reported on national news as detroit. we have our fair share of violence don't get me wrong, but i've lived here my whole life (27 years) and have nnever personally witnessed any type of violence i think we as a city get more negative attention than we deserve

This young man being killed is tragic but his death as well as the many others
associated with rap music is an indication of what corporate America
has done to hip-hop. What was once an esteem building culture with songs like
U.N.I.T.Y by Queen Latifah and Fight
the Power by Public Enemy to name a few
has been changed into a self destructive
genre with our women being portrayed as whores and men being only concerned with
money, expensive cars, jewelry and getting as many whores as they can.
In addition , instead of referring to
black men as brothas or cats or even homies we now refer to them as the n-word. As much as some people try to downplay the n-word if you really take a moment to think about it When you think of the word brotha what image comes to mind? Now when you think of the n-word what comes to mind?. I'm sure
the two images are way different.
When I think of the word brotha I think of my friends that I went to junior high school with back in the day and its a pleasant memory.
When I think of the n-word I think of
violence and abuse that blacks have
suffered and the brutal image of Emitt Till in his coffin comes to mind. I think of black men hanging from trees in

There is no way to redeem the word it

We need to take back our art form by

support us by representing us in a more

When I read some of the posts on this blog written in "ebonics" it really makes me sad because as a parent i am concerned with what is happening to our
kids. My wife is a teacher and sometimes when I am helping her mark students papers I see some of the same
type of absurd spellings. These kids
are absorbing all this junk we adults
are letting happen.
We really need to stop and take a look
at what's going on and try to make some
changes.

Detroit — Rapper Proof fired the first bullet in a Detroit nightclub shootout that ended his life, police said Wednesday.
The bullet hit Keith Bender, 35, in the head, critically injuring him early Tuesday at the C.C.C., a bar in a strip of businesses along Eight Mile, the road made famous in Eminem's movie of the same name.
Proof, whose real name is Deshaun Holton, was taken to a nearby outpatient treatment center by a private car, where he was pronounced dead.
Detectives are currently trying to figure out who shot Proof, said Detroit police spokesman Sgt. Omar Feliciano. He said his office was told by homicide detectives that Proof fired the first shot at Bender.
Feliciano said no further information has been released.
Proof, 32, was a member of the rap group D12 and was the best man in Eminem's January wedding. Eminem was seldom seen in public without Proof.
Police said officers responding to 911 calls about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday found the bar empty when they arrived.
Bender also was taken to a hospital by a private car.
Police Chief Ella Bully-Cummings said Tuesday that detectives don't know what Proof was doing at the bar, which was operating outside of its licensed hours. Investigators face a unique challenge because no victims were present at the crime scene, Bully-Cummings said.
Police have said that an argument between two parties at the club escalated into gunfire.

Hello Everyone, I am new to this blog, but I feel a need to comment. Yes this is a major problem in our culture, however, I can't really by into the whole, its bigger than hip hop mindset. Hip-hop is the main way to relay messages to the youth. nowadays the message is smoke weed, pimp hoes, ride big, fuck the world, takeover the hood, smack a bitch, sell heroin, sell crack, do your time, kill anyone that violates, etc... This is not bigger than hip hop, it IS Hip hop. The things that are happening are directly related to what is happening IN hip hop. I one of those people that has almost gave up on hip hop as a whole. I make beats now, no more rapping for a long while, at least until the content becomes more positive. I don't even want any of these fake thugs rapping on my ish. One more thing... I am also tired of ALL these fake as rappers like, GAME, Lloyd Banks, yayo, Busta and down the line. The Detroit police have confirmed that indeed Proof did shoot the other man first, and then was subsequently shot himself. If that is the case, this is just ANOTHER sad case of taking "keepin it hood" way too far. He had 5 children and a wife, nothing this man could have said to him in an argument would have been worth him murdering someone, but now instead of him going to jail, he's dead. There are certain spots in Oakland where you shouldn't be at certain times, but other places in Oakland feel safe. There was still a lot of gang tension when I was last out in Cali. It ain't no gang thing or bad area thing in the D. We are one of the most segrated cities in the nation so anywhere in the city it can go down and it has gone down. There are just certain areas where you shouldn't go at any time if you ain't from there period. Proof got shot on a border from the suburbs where the police are visible on the suburb side but not at all on the Detroit side. There are multiple blocks and streets in the city where they reguarly shoot at cops on patrol. Everybody thinks its cool to act in violence until its them or their family lying in that pine box.

Man Suspected Of Fatally Shooting Rapper Proof Surrenders, Pool Game May Have Sparked Fight

A 28-year-old man suspected of fatally shooting rapper Proof of D12 turned himself in today (April 12).
Mario Etheridge, 28, of Detroit is being detained by the police for allegedly shooting the rapper during an altercation inside of the C.C.C. nightclub.
Etheridge was also a bouncer at the C.C.C. nightclub.
Police said he is a cousin of Keith Bender Jr., the bouncer who was allegedly shot by Proof during the fight, which took place around 4:30 am Tuesday.
Sources told AllHipHop.com that the altercation was rooted in a pool game.
For unknown reasons, the men two began arguing and a fight broke out.
A shot was fired in the air, Proof allegedly pistol-whipped Bender, knocked him to the ground and then shot him.
Etheridge then allegedly open fire on the rapper, striking him four times in the head and chest.
Authorities are still investigating the incident, but police said the 28-year-old was cooperating with authorities.
Bender, a former Sgt. in the United States Army, is on life support in critical condition.
