"Black. White." Episode 5: White People Like To Touch Hair, Can Jungle Fever Be Real Love?

Posted on April 6, 2006 10:10 AM

Every week Talkin' Videos will provide a reaction to Ice's Cube's "Black. White." reality series where two families swap races to see how the other half lives. Ron Mexico will blog from the Black view, and guest blogger Bear will represent the White side of things. Let us know what you think in the comment section below.

Bear:
"Black. White." is not the best show in television by far, but last night’s episode was somewhat entertaining. After watching the first ten minutes, I came to a realization: all white people like to touch people’s hair. I’m gonna be real. When I saw Carmen in the beauty salon touching a lady’s hair, Renee said to the camera something along the lines of, “Who touches people’s hair?” All I can say are hairdressers and white people. I really haven’t seen a black person touch another’s hair, but us white people, for some peculiar reason, we love it. White girls love feeling my spikey hair and I mess around with their hair when I wanna get under their skin. I guess it’s a white thing … it’s really funny when I think about it.

Now did anyone else hear Bruno refer to himself as “Black Bruno?” Is this an early sign of him having Split Personalities? For weeks, it has appeared that Brian is on a crusade to prove to Bruno that white people are racist. There was a segment where Brian and Bruno (in his black makeup) were asking white people to help with their “car” troubles and most didn’t seem to have a problem helping out. Maybe it’s because of the camera presence, maybe not. But I found it interesting when Brian said and I quote, “I’m frustrated because every time I take Bruno out in his black make-up, I’m striking out.” Well Brian, not all white people are out to get you. Words of advice: either abandon your mission or bring Bruno somewhere other than a supermarket parking lot.

For weeks, I’ve been disappointed with Renee for not trying to learn about “White America.” It’s like she had a chip on her shoulder, so I was surprised when she wore the white makeup. I didn’t blame her for peeling out at the Bible Study and the Knitting thing, but when she met that lady (Debbie) at the Scrapbook Class, I was finally happy because she saw that there are open-minded white people who aren’t oblivious to the world. Regardless of what you think, not all white people are close-minded and ignorant. Anyone who thinks otherwise is an idiot.

So Rose has a crush on Devon? Well well well … if Rose plays her cards right, maybe Bruno and Carmen will experience a new side of black and white.

Ron:
I am thoroughly intrigued by the whole Rose/Devon romance that is building. I must say, I, Ron Mexico, have mixed the milk in my cocoa puff… milky, milky cocoa puff. Swirl, fever, whatever you wanna call it... I don’t really get into all of the bullshit. Like a great man once told me “I don’t discriminate. I regulate every shade of the ass.”

However, growing up something like Devon, I remember having a strange feeling when a white girl took a liking to me. I’ve seen niggas treat it like they hit the lotto. Not me. I say it all looks the same when her parents’ lights are turned out. (Yeah, we took it there.)

I don’t know about D, but my black paranoia wouldn’t readily allow me to think that a white person could love me for me. I felt like they only cared about me because they saw something special in me. Like… I wouldn’t have gotten love if they didn’t think I was gonna be somebody rich, powerful, important or famous someday. I swear, one girl I dated was just using me to piss off her folks. Based on how I’m treated by society on a day-to-day basis, sometimes I wonder if those feelings were just paranoia.

I mean, I know there’s nothing wrong with loving people for their most impressive attributes, but sometimes I wonder if some of the white people who have shown me favor in life would have done so if I didn’t show them something that could be of benefit someday. Would an anonymous benefactor have paid for my scholarship if I were just a normal ass dude with no superhuman strengh, tremendous leaping ability, cannon-like arm, George Washington Carver ingenuity and a 51 on the Wonderlic? I doubt it severely. Shit, when’s Radio Raheem getting an invitation to Princeton?

  • I don't know about this show it's getting worse every week. The black family seem to be trying to prove that everyone that's white is a racist. Although racial discrimination prevails, all whites are not racist. Bruno's ignorant ass is a big joke. I think when his daughter brings Devon into the family he'll get a big ass wake-up call. Is it me or does the black mother not look white?

  • I wish this show would have been shot in the South. It would make a hell of a lot of sense since this was the breeding ground of the civil rights movement. If it would have taken place down here in the South, Brian would have shown Bruno how cruel white ppl and even how cruel black ppl are towards diff. races.

  • I hate it when people even suggest that "jungle fever" can't be real love. To me its just a racist way of thinking, I am white and have had a black girlfriend for about the last two years, and for DAMN sure I just love her for her, I don't care one bit about her race...it was never a consideration.

  • Observations:

Renee doesn't look white at all, she still has full lips and a wide nose. She looks like a mixed person at the best.

Bruno is going to get to know black people more when his daughter gets knocked up by Devon, she got it bad for homeboy. She's all, let me see your tatoo, next she will be slobbing on the knob. They was already in her bed room, I hope the poet waxed that ass.

Carmen is just clueless; white, black, red, whatever the chick is just clueless, hell she married Bruno.

If Bruno wants to get the black experience he needs to quit dressing like Carlton Banks, he's so damn non-threatening no one is going to be scared of him. They need to take Bruno to a Black Republicans meeting so he can meet some like minded negroes.

Like someone already said they should do the show in the south, Cali is one of the more diverse and open states in the US. I would like to see this show in Charleston, SC or somewhere like that. Also if they are going to do the show again they need to get a black women whose features aren't so prominent, mainly a black person who doesn't have huge soup coolers.

  • I just re-read what I wrote and I feel the need to clarify something.

I am in no way suggesting that an interracial couple can't have true love. I believe that love can be found anywhere and that we shouldn't place a racial divide on something so pure and human.

What I AM saying is that there are certain societal constraints that affect these relationships negatively, and in the manner I expressed in my part of today's commentary.

More than anything I wanted folks to think from the black perspective. Historically we've been objectified. In many ways we're still regarded as second-class citizens. Within the context of that, interracial romantic relationships have to factor in a power element. Sometimes it IS "oooh, look at that magnificent black creature... I just wish I could take her/him home." It also works the other way "yeah... I'm doin alright! I got me a WHITE person! Pinnacle of American society here I come!"

But yeah, I don't mean to belittle any interracial relationships. I've actually been in a good one where there WAS love, and it WASN'T like that. I'm just bringing up an issue that black folks actually think about when in these situations.

  • The part that really irritated me was when Carmen was in the hair salon. She was rubbing people's backs, and asking to touch and rub people's hair. Black women don't do that. If some women came up to me in a Salon, while I am getting my hair hooked up, why would I want you to touch my hair? I have had white people ask me before, which is embarrassing, like my hair is some kind of foreign object. Then they ask all of these questions about how it is done and how you braid it.
I thought Rose would be a bit better, but she had the nerve not only to call that one girl's hair fuzzy, but to say her hair reminded her of Halloween? If the cameras weren't there, I don't think she would have been given such a polite reaction. The beauty shop is a part of my culture that I love. Just the conversation, advice and everything else is great. I look forward to going each time, but Carmen and Rose would never understand that.
I know what you mean, Ron, when it comes to interracial relationships. I have found love in white men, but I also had men degrade me when they first met me. A guy once told me bluntly that he wanted to go out with me just to make his parents mad and also said I was still white enough for him to go out with. I was in shock and disgusted and to think, this was not the first time this happened. There are some people out there who see just race and what it can do to benefit them and that is sad.

Not all white people are racists, some are some of the best friends to have. I do not look at skin color, but character. Hell niggas are more racists than white people. The Black Group is making themselves look like asses with this treasure hunt for racism adventure. Why can't they accepct that not all white people are not racists. Espically if you look like a respectable black person.

  • Hey Bear,

Let me clear this up for you. No black thinks that ALL white people are racist BUT all white people could potentially be racist. You just never know, it could be the waitress at the resturant seating you by the kitchen, or the cop pulling you over, or your boss denying you the promotion (holla) So, I'll admit that most blacks are aprehensive about any white person because there's no way to tell who's racist until they do something ignorant...Example, I went in for a job interview a few months ago, now I don't mean to brag but I have an impeccable resume for my profession so I am always confident when I interview because when qualifications are what they're looking for I get the job hands down. I interviewed with a realty company for a position. As I waited in the lobby, I chit-chatted with the recptionist (black) and found we had some things in common, (church, etc;)As the interviewer (white) came out of the other room with the other applicant (white) I saw them both smiling and laughing and shaking hands, then it was my turn. NOW THIS IS THE SUBTLEDY THAT BRIAN IS SPEAKING OF. As soon as the guy comes out for the next candidate...me. His entire deameanor changes, his mood etc;. He looks at my resume and sort of throws it on the desk like...whatever. During the entire interview he doesn't crack a smile and describes the duties as if the job is super duper difficult. I smile my biggest white folks smile the entire interview the guy is short with me and basically cuts the interview short. I knew I didn't get the job by his body language. There are plenty of open minded white people around but in my experience don't count on them to be there when you need them cuz they'll usually jump ship when the heat gets hot.

  • I'd like to see this experiment in a few different areas of the country...north, south, midwest and see how it differs. How interesting would a arab/jew experiment be in the Holy Land? Dangerous, though.

Renee's features are entirely too black to pass for white, regardless of how talented the make-up crew is. I'm glad she finally found a white friend. I was starting to lose hope that she would learn anything from this experience.

Brian needs to give up trying to show Bruno racism. The point of the experiment isn't just racism, it's culture. I wished he try to show him who we are, not just how we're systematically kept down. And reparations??? That's a waste of time to even discuss. Brian seems like a good guy and even a smart guy, but his focus is baffaling to me. His son's ignorant of his culture, lost academically and completely apathetic, but appears to get little guidence from him.

I hope Nick figures out he has a big ass target on his back as a young black male and that he needs to get his shit together soon. He's the only person on this show that really gets me heated (probably because I've got two young sons). He reinforces every stereotype that keeps us down.

I think Carmen is really trying. There are some things she's just not going to get...simply because she can't, but atleast she's trying.

Rose is about to get her flower picked.

Bruno's a lost cause. He just makes me sad.

You summed the show up real well and I agree. Brian is wasting time dealing with Bruno, Bruno's mind is closed and he will get whatever he will get from the experience. Brian should stop spending time trying to get Bruno to open his mind and work on getting Nick to use his because the boy is in serious trouble if he doesn't get a wake up call soon.

Speaking of getting it, Rose is going to get IT from Devon if she hasn't already assuming she isn't with her boyfriend anymore.

  • Anyone who thinks that there isn't something negative about interracial couples, is a damn fool. It isn't always, but think about it. Anything in life can be wrong, just depends on the reasons behind the actions.

You see, if a black and white person are together, because they love eachother, then there's nothing wrong with it. That's just a couple, they happen to be of different enthicity. But when someone is with someone because "Ohh, he's black, I like chocolate." or "Ohh, lemme get some vanilla in my life." and all that bullshit. Something is wrong with that. Because you're basing your decision for a relationship on the exterior. That's just stupid, period.

On top of that though, it also has a lot to do with why you put someone puts so much emphasis on dating someone of a different enthicity. But, like I said, if it's where you find love, than don't question it. Only question it when you seek it above all else.

There is something wrong with interracial couples.. but people of different races dating is cool.

  • hahaha.......lol....just about everything...i dont know its funny...not in a bad way!! everyone's opinions r just makin me laugh...=)

but yea..the show is funny...but really though...i dont know how to explain this..but i think i just finally UNDERSTOOD some thing about the black culture..like what the poetry group taught rose...like what that black lady that became carmen's friend taught her...and just what jeez...i forget everyones names..haha...um...the black family...what the point they were trying to get across to their son.. its deep...i guess it's because i come from a family background that has it's history too..but how they were saying... it's one thing to be color blind which is good...but it's another thing to be ignorant..its true. how are you just going to sit there and not be glad that you are able to live the way you do today. now just because you're third..fourth...or etc..generation you have it so easy that you blind yourself from YOUR OWN HISTORY and culture. there is a damn reason why you are able to live so comfortably.. you know..and of course the parents still had to go through somewhat tough times, and for their kid to not give a **...yea i understood what they were trying to get across..
oh and even though the black family thought carmen didn't learn anything, i think she really did.
oh and hahaha...i hope rose and that guy get together!!! thats so cute!! haha... i knew she had a crush on him!!

oh this is something i liked that they said remember???...." why...why do you have to keep taking this...?...
answer: "because my skin will never change.." true...very true....

oh hahahaha.....bruno is such an idiot!!!! that video!!????? oookkk...

oh yea..but the biggest thing... is that yes we KNOW that all white people are not racist... WE ALL KNOW THIS...BUT..for some naive white people..they just dont understand...and it's like we blame you guys...it's just that youve never had to put up with anything and you've never had to experience things like that..that get to you.. and just like carmen said, i dont remember her exact words but it was somethink like...something like that, that happens to me throught my life, constantly, will either empower me or annoy the hell out of me..

ps...this was a cool experience...now how about doing this for other races...??? =D because just like the song says..
