I think we're gonna have to entitle this particular profile "Real Talk." Tika Rainn, better known to the world as Flavor of Love's "Sweetie" sounds off on reality television, Flavor's mama and being a one woman "Freak Show" (among many other topics). Oh, if only everyone else could be so lucky as to shoot the breeze with this sharp young lady. Y'all are just gonna have to read and listen. Take my word for it. [audio coming soon]
Sweetie reaffirmed that the girls didn’t know which rap personality they’d be working with on the show until they got there. That’s a little on the grimy side. “You get to the interview and find out it’s Flavor Flav and you’re like [*car screeching*]! Then you have to come up with a new thing in your head like ‘Okay. Am I gonna do this or am I going home?'”
Tika cites Hoopz as her best buddy from her time on the show. Sweetie loses a little sugar when discussing how people behind the scenes were trying to paint them as lesbians. “When it was time for me to go they were like ‘You and Hoopz seem really really close... What’s going on there?’ I was like ‘Y’all better get out my face, dog. [laughter] I can’t even believe you askin me this.’”
Sweetie attests that despite the crafty editing of the Red Lobster date, she truly is a sweetheart and that there is a very serious difference between what the cameras show and what really is.
Ron Mexico: What’s the difference between what we’ve seen on TV and what’s really good?
Tika Rainn: …Actually, me and Flav got along great. I feel like maybe there was like 3 people in the house that’s really compatible to him and to me I was one of them. They don’t even show in the limo like, how good we get along. We have like so much to talk about. We sittin there like kickin old school raps together and stuff. Even when we go to Red Lobster we have a ball.

TR: If you notice, I’m asking those 2 girls… “Would you guys leave if you had a chance to go with Flav?” I wasn’t asking that question for no reason. I was asking that question because he asked me to leave with him.
RM: Ahhh.
TR: --and I was like “Dude, that’s not fair to the other girls.” I wanted everyone to be treated fairly. But we had a ball together. Even though I feel like Flav was like wolf cookies… I even got past that. You can even ask all my friends. I don’t normally get past that, but he is a good person deep down inside.
Yes, you read that right. She described Flavor Flav as "wolf cookies." The self-proclaimed “Look Monster” clarifies that she loves Red Lobster and was more than happy to be there. Don’t get it twisted, Tika is apparently far from the swanky foo-foo type.
TR: I can be in the streets or I can be in the suites. I ain’t got no problem with either place. If we was goin to a foo-foo place, I would have had a good time. We was at Red Lobster and I was like “Cool. Let’s kick it!”
RM: Crack open some lobster tail. Let’s get some cheddar biscuits goin on. [laugther]
TR: That’s right! And they putting my face up there like… They’re using the same face! I was making that face about something else that he asked me… If Flavor didn’t have a good time, I wouldn’t have stayed that night.
RM: In your defense, I gotta say if somebody asked me if they could “taste my mouf” I don’t know how I’d respond to that. That ain’t exactly [Dave Chappelle white people voice] “Might I have this dance?” That’s [Pookie voice] “Can I taysse yo’ mouff!”
TR: --There’s 20 girls that he’s competing for. I’m seeing chicks kiss on him, tongue him down in front of me… I’ve been to a swinger party before. That’s not for me… The reason I said "3 weeks" was because by then I figured the show would be over… If he ended up liking me and it was us, then I would have been fine with kissing him.
RM: Right. That ain’t exactly sanitary.
TR: It’s not. I don’t know where they been last.
(Since our TV vs. reality conversation got a little sidetracked, allow me to re-introduce myself.)
TR: To me, nobody was fighting for Flavor Flav. New York and Hottie and all them, they was fighting for airtime… That’s exactly why I went off when I left. I was like “I’m gettin my airtime too.”
RM: I feel like you gave the most important contribution to the show to date. Not only did you air out what was on your mind to Flavor Flav… but you made some very valid points about reality television.
TR: --I was always trying to help people out… Trying to be mannerable to the producers… I want them to show that black women are cool too. We help each other out too, and have each other’s backs too… I would see a scene on TV with like Serious wearing my necklace. I was like “Hoopz, you wanna borrow these earrings?” I even woke the girls up for their dates with Flav the next morning.
Sweetie makes it a point to thank Viacom for making quality television even when she felt she was misrepresented. She’s definitely taken the time to shake some of the misconceptions about her. It would seem that misconception #1 is that she is a prude.
RM: We were talking about reality [TV] versus actuality. You were painted on the show as somewhat of a prude. So I went to your myspace page…
TR: [excited] Uh huh?!
RM: …and I heard a song there.
TR: Uh huh!
RM: …called “Freak Show”
TR: Yes. [uncontrollable laughter on both parts]
RM: By the way, I LIKE THIS SONG! [still laughing] I didn’t know you was an MC, but I listened to “Freak Show” and I was like "This is the total 180 from what we were seeing on the show.”
TR: You were like “OH MY GOD!”
RM: At first we saw the little rodeo dance. That gave a little inkling, but then I’m listening to “Freak Show” all after the fact and I’m like “Whoooa.”
TR: I say when I have a man, that’s what I wanna be for my man… If you’re gonna have a man you need to be in there in the house so he don’t gotta go nowhere else… I’m totally down with bein a freak FOR YOUR MAN. Not for everybody else, but for your man. You know, I believe in breakfast and a blowjob for your man… [laughter] Oooh, was I allowed to say that word?
RM: Speak on it! [laughter] Say whateeeeever you want! Uncle Ruckus is listening!
We got to talkin about Flavor and his mama as well. In case you don’t remember, Mrs. Anna Drayton is pretty much the reason why Sweetie got the boot when she did. Tika was quite confused watching the playback of Mama Flavor droppin the dime on her. Apparently, so was Tika’s family.
TR: It was so funny, ‘cause my grandma called here. She was like “That boy AND his mama ugly!” I have never heard my grandmother say anything bad about anybody. So that cracked me up.
RM: I can’t front. I see where he gets his looks from.
TR: Somebody sent me a message on Myspace and they was askin me about it. I was like “If she wanna ask Flav about something, she need to advise him to take care of his 6 kids and one on the way!” [laughter]
RM: [laughter] Six kids and the one on the w-- ONE ON THE WAY?!?!
TR: Exactly.
RM: W-w-w-wait. Hold up! Got a kid on the way? As in like, right now while the show is goin on? (See Ya Heard's blog about Flav's new baby)
TR: Exactly. And that was part of my reason of being like “Okay, how far do I want to go with this. How serious do I take it?” I can say this: The most important thing Flavor has taught us is “Don’t believe the hype.”
RM: Wow.
Tika is currently headed to Atlanta to work on new music with producers. She is also featured in an upcoming movie called “Dead Zero.” Also, in case you weren’t aware, she played alongside Treach in “Love And A Bullet.” Look for this girl. She’s real talk. Plus, if you’re the right dude, you might get to see the “Freak Show” side of things. That'd be sweet!
