The Boondocks: "Let's Nab Oprah"

Posted on February 13, 2006 2:50 PM

A Black man’s work is never done… Sorry about the delay in putting up today’s entry, folks. A brother is still trying to dig out from the “Blizzard of ’06.” Anywho, I gotta say I was a little disappointed in last night’s episode. I mean there were definitely some “what did he say/rewind the dvr” moments, but for the most part, I have to say last night’s episode was pretty uneventful.

What pisses me off is that it had so much potential. The set-up was perfect. You had Ed Wuncler III (Charlie Murphy) and Gin Rummy (Samuel L. Jackson) back at it again (BTW, did anyone notice the homage to Snatch at the beginning or was it me?), a plot to kidnap Oprah and an ill sibling rivalry fight a la “Street Fighter” between Huey and Riley. So what went wrong? I’m not quite sure but I have a few ideas.

1. They really didn’t elaborate at all on why they wanted to kidnap the Almighty O. They got it half-right. This woman from Kosciusko, Mississippi does seem to have this strange power over women—especially Black women. But they just left it there. Where was Uncle Ruckus chiming in with him 800 reasons why he hates “Okrah?” They never even showed an animated Oprah. Are people really that afraid of her? Dave Chappelle never showed Oprah’s face when he did that skit about her having his kid either. Does this woman wield that much power??? (Oprah, if you are reading this I love your show… and the magazine… and the book club… and the new channel on XM Satellite Radio. Big fan, really big fan.)

2. The scene where they kidnap Maya Angelou and she is whooping Rummy’s ass is hilarious but where was the requisite stab at her poetry. Yeah, I know he said, “Maya ‘And I Rise’ Angelou?!?!?” But I was looking for more…

3. The kidnapping of Bill Cosby. Don’t get me wrong… If you read this blog regularly, you all know I am not a Cosbyite. So, that scene had me ready to cheer. Until they brought him back. Not that I don’t understand. I kind of imagine Old Man Cos does yammer on like that. But I wouldn’t have minded them “drop squadding” the pudding pusher.

I don’t know…. I know every episode can’t be a jewel, but a brother can dream. Besides, the 2-hour “Inside The Actor’s Studio” featuring Dave Chappelle provided more than enough laughs last night. If you missed it, be sure to check it out the next time it airs.

I know one thing… Whoever wrote “Move Them Butt Cheeks” (the song/video that is always on whenever a character turns on the TV or has the radio on) might want to look into a copyright infringement suit against Bubba Sparxxx and the Ying Yang Twins.

One last note, your man Dark Kent has found a new home for his hate. If you’re a fan of this blog (or not), holler at me at http://www.myspace.com/thedarkkent. I’m not gon’ lie--I got the idea after seeing my man Ron Mexico’s myspace page. So, what? “I’m not a writer, I’m a biter.”

Swagger Jacker #1,

Dark

Anyho, did anyone else get the Enter The Dragon/Jim Kelly reference "Man, you straight outta a comic book."? The Bill Cosby shit was funny but they shoulda at least roughed him up.

  • Last nights episode was great but it apparently went over your heads. The episode was a big metaphor for George Bush and his criminal antics. Ed Wunschler, notice the W on all their property, is Bush and his buddy Gin Rummy is rumsfeld.(The jokes about there lack of planning and ineptitude were about the Iraq war). His daddy (George Bush the first) owns ands runs everything even the police and therefore no one tries to stop him. The police would be the CIA and military in this extended metaphor. They were totally complicit and actively looked the other way just like during the Iraq quagmire. Riley is Colin Powell in this episode who goes along but eventually realizes they are phony gangsters or in Colin Powell’s case realizes it was all based on lies. When all the security tries to stop Huey from stopping Ed, rummy, and riley they are like the media who tried to discredit the opponents of the Iraq war instead of stopping the reckless criminal acts of the bush administration. I thought episode was hysterical and think the rest of you will find it a lot funnier when seen in the proper light. My favorite part was when they robbed their own bank and asked the bank’s manager for feedback on their 22 minute bank robbery. Big UP to Aaron Mcgruder for speaking truth to power in such a funny way.

  • That shit was fucking great. Even if it isn't in its typical "haha politically incorrect funny" garb, it kicked ass just for the fight choreographies. Those scenes were off the hook and, Huey gets to flex his nuts and show how pimp he really is.

  • These folks are clowns. They make me laugh. Everyone is so quick to hate, and judge. Ya'll didn't just enjoy some funny shit. Not all of them can be the best episode. Just laugh, then think about the issues. One dude had to look all into the episode, and find a metaphor. He might be right though. I think if Aaron wanted to bash bush he would. Dude is a dope writer though. He holds it down with the issues and underlying shit. They need to start up them boondock shirts before i make my own bootleg ones and sell them joints on Ebay. Nigga technology is funny. And white boys do say nigga when we aint around. Thats real. And some "niggas" don't even get mad. the let them do it. Give them a nigga pass like its okay. Fuck that shit.

  • Good Point SOLID. One more point to add...in the first episode "The Garden Party" Mr. Wuncler, after riley shoots Ed jr. out of his window with a shotgun, says to grandpa "that boy is going to be president someday".

  • Thank you J.

Someone enlightened the class the last time we had an Ed and Rummy Boondocks.

I thought last night's episode was great.

Huey also recapped all of Ed and Rummy's fuckups in a moment of clarity for Riley.

Even Granddad was in on the act. He represents the uninformed mass public who looks at those who question authority and status quo as "haters" or "Un-Amerrrrcan."

    Long live The Boondocks!

Good shit J. Maucks and SOLID Bob.

How about the country named "Niger", to me thats the same as two "g"'s is that considered offensive? Oh yeah the word "America" does that make anyones blood boil? (no pun intended) It is so interesting to me how a sound can evoke so many emotions.

  • Seth... Mauk didn't NEED to look into that shit himself. McGruder (spell it right ya'll ig'nant niggas.) has said a lot of times himself that Wunsler and Rummy are parodies of W. and Rumsfeld.

And what kind of entertainment is a comedy television show where they come out and just say "We hate bush" he expects us AS A PEOPLE to be better than that. He expects the public to understand the metaphor.

Go ahead, call me an uppity book-readin' uncle tom ass nigga.

But i'm just tellin' it like it is.

  • I also wish that people would look at the actual animation itself aswell. The fights between Hughey and Riley/Bushido Brown are some of the best from American animation companies right now. Family guy's animations aren't that fluid. I have more to say about this funny ass episode but I will leave that for another time. Just commenting on the anime-style animations. So long as they show Hughey fighting alot more, I'm cool. He fucked Riley up and got kicked through a brick wall. Damn, aint that something?

  • Chapelle didn't show Oprah's face because it was a fake Oprah. Chapelles skits weren't as high priced as Mad TV or any other sketch show. Instead of going all out with make-up and masks, he could just throw a wig on a black woman. Plus I liked that he didn't show the face.

Huey: What was that an excibition? You need emotional content.

  • J Mauck, that is kinda odd, but it was a flashback from an earlier episode so I guess you could argue it happened earlier. But that shotgun shit is crazy in its own right. Personally, I like this episode, and I like cosby at the end. 'pull up your pants, you little ghetto hooligans'. Although, I'm not a cosby hater at ALL. In fact when I listen to the speech he made, I agree with him completely and I really wonder what all the fuss is about. I was even more proud of cosby when he defended his statements amist a hail of blowback. But hey, Thats just me.

  • That was the best episode of the Boondocks EVER!!! It was a complete metaphor and the fact that it completely escaped the mental capacity of most of the people on here is a tragedy. Gin Rummy was the muscle, the military, the police, anyone with a gun and backed by power. And the Bushido Brown portions were awe inspiring. Mad props to Jim Kelly. If you noticed, during the Huey vs. Riley fight, in the kitchen Huey wags his finger like Bruce Lee at Riley. Too hot!!! Too bad most people who hated the show remind me of Grandad. Woefully uninformed and oblivious to subtlty.
