The Boondocks: "The Real"

Posted on January 9, 2006 12:48 PM

Happy New Year, peoples! “The Boondocks” is back… and therefore so am I. I know y’all missed me [Pausing for applause.]

So, last night’s episode, “The Real,” tackled the idea of reality versus reality shows. And while it was funny, the episode seemed to lack a certain punch. For example, where was the reference to the way Blacks are portrayed on reality TV? I don’t know how many times I can see the “crazy Black chick” (Hey Omarosa) or the “angry Black man” (typified by one of my personal heroes/the original “angry Black man,” Kevin Powell) stereotypes played out on the flat screen. I know Aaron McGruder has touched on this subject in his strip, so I am just wondering why he didn’t feel the need to translate it to the animated series.

That said, the show’s take on “reality” shows like “Pimp My Ride” and “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” was great. Both shows, particularly “Extreme Makeover,” appear to want to help people or give to those who have not but in reality they just lavish them with things… like a hydraulic beds, watermelon patches and fried chicken dispenser in their homes.

What really had me laughing was the Cosby shades. “Cosbyness is next to Godliness.” Ha! As a longtime Cosby objector, I would disagree but we are all entitled to your opinion. Don’t get me wrong. Bill had his time. He did a lot for us (both aspiring comedians and Black people) but… now he’s just the scary old man who lives on your block. “Get off my lawn, you damn kids!”

Now while last night’s episode was cool… what I am looking forward to is next week’s Dr. Martin Luther King episode. In the preview, Dr. King wasn’t killed when he was shot but rather was in a comma for TK years. He wakes up in 2000 and has to adjust to the “new world.” Yes, you read right. I can hear the controversy brewing now. Be sure to check back here next week for my thoughts.

Lastly, I hear there is some “Boondocks” beef brewing between McGruder and Reginald Hudlin, the show’s executive producer. According to the Los Angeles Times, the two had a “creative and personal falling out.” Hudlin, who is also a top-ranking programming exec at BET, is apparently is now planning to launch an animated series for BET to compete with “The Boondocks.” Umm…. yeah. Because “Hey Monie” was such a hit. Maybe they can bring back some re-runs of “The P.J.s.”

Aiight, until next week peoples… I am Dark Kent, card-carrying member of A.F.R.O., B.R.O., and B.R.U.H.

  • I agree, last night wasn't the funniest or greatest episode but it was still pretty good. I was still laughing quite a bit. I figured there would be a disappointing episode and if that was it it wasn't that bad. I too am looking forward to next weeks episode.

And y'all are killing me with the random ass comments.

  • Seeing as how BET is basically the modern day minstrel show, I don't a competing cartoon from would be relovent. It would just seem self defeating if not hypocritical.

  • Without Dave Chappelle, the Boondocks is the greatest show on TV! Fat Shout out 2 Aaron McGruder, he should be getting alot more love from the main stream media, Dave did. Even the theme song is banging. I can't wait to catch this week's episode on tivo!

  • I thought this was the best thought out episode of them all actually.

I feel like this episode was truest to the form and nature of the strip. Some people complain that Boondocks was becoming "The Nigga Show" as the term was definitely thrown around a lot. I didn't mind that, but it was starting to look like the show was going to rest on the laurels of Riley yelling the n-word.

This episode gave more to think about than usual, and I still thought it was funny. I think episodes like this more often will do well for the show's longevity.

    Now... MOVE THEM BUTT CHEEKS!!!

  • Cartoon Network... Sundays at 11pm/10pm central. The Boondocks is a political and social satire based on the comic strip by the same name created by Aaron McGruder. The comic strip has been around for a number of years...and basically it's hilarious. Watch it. Try downloading it if you need to catch up on the episodes.

Sarah always saw her watchyer standing at the window, just staring at her. It didn't bother her, as he was so far away... what could he possibly see? Her yellow bikini was hiding her most VAGINA , but it was easy to see the curves of her stunning figure. Anyway, she was an exhibitionist and loved people WATchING her. She felt a tingling sensation between her legs and aching in her breasts. Sarah moved her hands, each cupping a BREAST.

  • To all of you who use the N word think about these situation and how you would feel about the N word after that.

    - Say you go to a drive threw and a white women from the drive threw says to you "Hi nigga, may I take your order"

-Your white boss at work tells you "Your the best worker I have, I wish I had more Niggas like you."

    - Your at your childs school for a PTA meeting and your childs white teacher says "your son the the best nigga in class"

To those of you who continue to spew that horrible word, how would you feel after those insists?

Next time you use that word , think about those situations and see how hypocrital your being call yourself and your own people a Nigga.

Nigga, quit trippin and get a life.

Anyways, back to the topic,Boondocks is one of the greatest shows since The Chappelle show.I'm so glad it finally got turned into a cartoon after all these years. This week's show was good, wasn't as funny as some of them but it still made me chuckle and it gives you some things to think about in this one.

Aaron, you are a God now.I praise you.Huey and Riley are nothing more then mini-me's of myself at that age.Ah,the good old days.

  • Hell Yea! I did notice that Sunday's episode was leering a lot more towards the strip. Which I think is straight because McGruder's staying to true to his original form. If he keeps that up the cartoon is bound to stay. Plus I heard today Mcgruder's about to come out with a video game and a movie for the boondocks. I say he doing his thang. More power to the nigga

  • Congrats to Aaron. I've been a fan of the strip for years, but embarrased to say that I have not caught the show yet. I don't know him personally, but we're from the same small suburban area of Columbia, Md. (where he graduated high school.). We went to rival High Schools. I'm just glad to see a brother profit by being creative.
