The Boondocks: Mid Season Re-Cap

Posted on January 30, 2006 3:19 PM

If watched “The Boondocks” last night you know it was a rerun of the first episode, “The Garden Party.” And for you avid readers of this blog (I know you all are), then you know I was supposed to get up with Asheru, the creator of the show’s theme song and writer of the controversial MLK speech that is making the rounds on the ‘Net. But that didn’t happen (Asheru, get at me!).

So, instead I thought I we should take a minute to recap the series’ first five episodes since the good folks at Cartoon Network have already renewed the series for a second season. What was your favorite episode? Favorite quotable?

I would have to say my favorite episode is a toss-up between poignant “Return of the King” and the Samuel L. Jackson-guested “A Date with the Health Inspector.” While the MLK episode voiced a lot of the issues I have had with my brothers and sisters for years, the subliminal jab at Dubya and Dick Cheney coupled with the commentary on racial profiling of “Health Inspector” was the satirical one-two punch that sold me on the show as my new crack (don’t ask).

As for quotes… Damn, there are so many. Off the top, I think the top two are what I like to call “Rileyisms.” The first would have to be “Game recognizes game and you looking real unfamiliar right now…” from “Guess Hoe’s Coming to Dinner.” Then there’s also the classic “I messes wit Xzibit, I messes with Xzibit…” from “The Real.

Now you all tell me what you are feeling about the show.

BTW, congrats to Aaron McGruder and crew for scoring an NAACP Image Award for Best Comedy Series. Now, let’s see if they win.

  • I have been quite impressed by the show so far. I am feeling the way they take on issues, and show several differnt sides of the Black experience-then promptly making fun of it. My favorite quotable was from "guess hoes coming to dinner" whne riley was like "The fam ain't gettin no cheddar Bisquits, but this random hoe is"

I was also feeling the episode when they was talking about a nigger moment.
Looking forward to next season and i hope they get at that public clowns like Jesse and AL.

  • boodocks kinda corny to me. they seriously be O-D'n wit the blackplotation. Nigga moments? come on now. Everyone fronts like thats the funnies shit since Martin ever since the Chapelle show went off. Funny how all the animators on the boondocks are asian. Whats even funnier is your white co-workers think we are all like that.

I dunno. maybe u country dudes really talk like that.
    Just my 2 cents.

  • Ironically "A ROCK" a nerve was hit because I think i've lived in more ghetto slums than most ppl here (I mean it and can prove it) but anyhow. You dont believe that the show has a reflective property that enables us who've progressed from that mentality and can look back on it and laugh. I think the property that most qualifies this show as a great one is.....
The oppurtunity you have as a minority/or majority how ever you look at is as a chance to see how stupid some of the actions and decisions our societal groups make. I only wish this show would've aired sooner, maybe we could've averted and curbed so many assanine issues within ourselves.

My favorite episodes- Gangstalicious: The tupac,50cent, jarule comparisson was incredible.

Favorite character- The old janitor man: Ironically this is a new epidemic within our communities where ppl are now (i'm black but mixed with greek, spanish and euroasian, white with indian) I mean if y ou dont like where you are from then deal with it. Saying you are half something you arent doesnt change who you are as an individual. Oh yeah and ironically this action is played by an under educated janitor. Goes to show that no matter how much education we get the anchors, executives, etc who find themselves in positions for change but would rather choose to alienate their cultures in order to maintain a separate level of accountability for doing only for themselves. (Tiger woods, michael jordans, and plenty of others).

  • ...totally agree with the picks... but the political jab in "Health Inspector" isn't about Dubya & Cheney...

the jab is aimed at Dubya & Rumsfeld... (Sam Jackson's character's nickname being "Gin Rummy" and all, the fast talk "Unknown Knowns and Known Unknowns" like Rummy with his famous ass press conferences)...

  • I love Boondocks, and this is _not_ fronting. Why do I love it? Here are a few reasons:

    1. "The stone that the builder refused" from the opening theme is a Biblical allusion. In the Bible, Jesus interprets the passages referring to "the stone that the builders refused" as referring to himself. Huey is Christ-like in the way his sensibility gets ignored/ridiculed by just about everyone else on the show.

    2. "The Itis" does a BEAUTIFUL! job of portraying the _pure_ Palpatine-like evil of Mr. Wuncler. The scene at the end where he looks upon his development of Meadowlark park and smiles is PERFECT in conveying what it does.

    3. Thank you, Aaron McGruder, for offending Al Sharpton with "The Return of the King" and making it even plainer that he does not think before he acts/speaks publicly.

    4. The picture, from "The Return of the King", with MLK's and Osama's faces inside a pink heart is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love that jab at Fox News!
