The Boondocks: "Cornbread, Fish and Collard Greens"

Posted on January 23, 2006 12:00 AM

the-itis.jpg

This week’s episode of “The Boondocks,” aptly titled “The Itis,” makes me glad I went vegetarian for ’06. As much as a brother loves fried chicken and waffles (shout out to Amy Ruth’s in Harlem), I had to put down the poultry for the new year in an effort to get healthier. We had already given up beef and pork a few years back. And if you watched last night’s episode, you see why—soul food, as good as it is, will kill you… if you’re not careful.

Now, I’m not Muslim nor am I one of those vegetarians that passes judgments on those who partake in the flesh, but having grown up in a traditional Southern family, where EVERYTHING is cooked in pork, I have seen the effects of a soul food diet first-hand -- diabetes, strokes and heart disease, anyone? And we wonder why the black community is so unhealthy? I am not saying that you should never enjoy a good “Luther,” or a piece of fatback, in fact there are times when I want to backslide myself, but the risks for me far outweigh the rewards. I have way too much venom and sarcasm to spread to leave this planet early.

What was really deep about last night’s episode was the effect that The Itis had on the neighborhood. Initially opened in an upscale neighborhood between a coffee shop and a day spa, Granddad’s restaurant took the ‘hood from classy to ashy in a matter of weeks. It wasn’t long before The Itis’ neighbors were a liquor store and a “damn” Foot Locker. All that’s missing was a check-cashing place and bulletproof Chinese take-out. The ‘hood became so bad that Ed Wuncler scored the park he had been fighting the state for. And given the neighborhood’s decline, I am sure he got it for a steal. That’s gentrification at work. Harlem… Newark… New Orleans (aka Mayor Ray Nagin’s delicious “Chocolate City”).

On a lighter note, I have to give y’all my episode highlights (i.e. the moments of the show that I needed to rewind because me and the Mrs. were laughing so loud):

  • Huey’s recap of “Soul Food.” That shit was funny on so many levels. First of all, why is everyone’s grandmother named “Big Mama”? Secondly, Huey was right. If it was the food that made Big Mama sick, why would her family continue the tradition? Yeah, I know it’s not about food; it’s the love in the food but still...
  • When Riley tastes “The Luther”… “This is what crack must feel like.”
  • Tommy D, the hip-hop lounge singer. The district attorney-turned-lounge lizard killed that cover of “Make The Music With Your Mouth, Biz...” - throat chops and all.

Aiight, that’s all for me this week. For those of you who saw last night’s episode, you know that next week the good folks at adult swim will be airing a repeat of the first episode, “The Garden Party,” but have no fear… you’re man Dark has you covered. I recently had an interesting conversation with Asheru, the ill MC who crafted the show’s theme song—lyrics from his “Niggas” were also used for the controversial MLK speech from last week’s episode—as well as some of the show’s other music, so I will have a fresh post for you and yours next Monday. Until then… peace, love, chicken grease, pig knuckles and all that greasy shit.

Dark.

  • Hashim, you are right, at least someone agrees with me. It's okay to eat Soul Food once in a while, but not an everyday thing. I quit eating pork 6 years ago and red meat. Reason why niggas are dropping like flies when they reach 50. But I'll give it to Old Man Wuncler, he hustled the state, make the neighborhood so bad that the value of the property was decreased at a cheap price.

That dont stop your blood pressure, blood sugar, and shit from sky rocketing and it dont stop your heart from giving out. Soul food makes u lazy and eating it everyday and slows down your metabolism and decreases your energy where u aint gonna wanna exercise cause you gonna be too tired and lazy to lol.

  • I saw the episode, loved it. He hits on a lot of good points. I know a lot of black men that died from heart attacks at 50 years old. It was great how they used Luther Vandross as an allusion to the name to that burger.

Also, I wonder why women live longer than men but they eat the same unhealthy foods? It's like it takes one heart attack for a man to go but I know old women that done had 3 or 4 heart attacks.

Nor am I a common African American soul food eater. I really don't like eating soul food, and I despise pork.

I didn't attend culinary school just to learn how to fry chicken and catfish. You collard greens and candied yams eatin ass black folk need to expand the knowledge of your tastebuds.

Venture away from stereotypical negro cuisines for once in your life.

I love me some soul food, but eating it all the time got my black ass up to a size 24(keep in mind I'm 5'11, so that was a whole lot of woman)..I'm a size 14 now and all the better for it- I'm not tired, I can run around after my daughter without feeling like my heart is going to explode...I'm not saying that every once in a while will kill ya, but every Sunday or more WILL do some serious damage.

  • The Boondocks is beyond funny. I cry just thinking about the crazy shit they say. Not only that but it speaks to Black America (And we should be listening damn it.) It is true that African Americans should eat healthier seeing as we can get every damn disease there is on Earth just by breathing the wrong way. I'm not going to lie and act like Soul Food ain't good. Fried chickens calls my name and I go running but I keep my distance when I know I need to. Eat healthy, do a couple sit-ups, and if the mood is right jog around the block once or twice instead of jogging to the fridge. Listen up my fellow Negroes, the truth is out there....seek it.

  • That episode was straight social commentary at its finest. It wasn't bust a gut funny, though it did make me laugh a few times, but it is the best show that I have seen. I especially liked how the episode showed people how "certain folks" do things knowing that it might cause urban blight in order to drive down property value so they can come back in and scoop the property on the low. "Some folks" are notorious for doing that here in Houston. Liked how old dude just dismissed Grandad after he achieved his goal of securing the park after the neighborhood got run down.

I will get to your request when I can. In case you need some clarity on how we do things here, I'll help you out.

Mondays - Dark Kent does The Boondocks

Tuesdays - I do Flavor of Love (Irreverent did the first 2.)

    Wednesday - I do a video

    Thursday - I do a throwback

    Friday - I do a video

The Roots Manuva video will be a throwback, there are a few on the request list before it.

This week we are doing the Talkin' Videos 2005 Awards Wednesday through Friday (barring disaster).

So yeah... you gotta be easy and give a nigga a minute, Holmes.

    Cheerio.

Oh yeah... My favorite shit was the Biz Markie joint on the piano... and Huey's prediction that the cops wouldn't come.

I will never ever admit that to my coworkers of course. Bad as I want to I am even afraid to bring it up with my black coworkers so this is the only place I get to talk about it. • The Boondocks should be required watching for all blacks (especially our boys and men). Now, I'm sure that I'll probably get some immature responses to this but I hope at least one of you young cats hears this. I was born and raised in the Mississippi Delta. There wasn't a part of the pig that we didn't eat. NOT ONE PART. I remember taking hog maws and pig feet to school for lunch (that's just how much we loved "soul food"). But what I didn't know was that "soul food" was, in fact, the shit that the white man wouldn't eat and the only thing our people had to eat. They didn't want to eat that mess, it was about survival. No one told me what I was eating back then. I'm pissed because a few years ago I saw an article in the USA TODAY saying how blacks in the Mississippi Delta had the highest rate of heart disease and diabetes, IN THE ENTIRE USA! I have to admit that once I left home I didn't continue to eat "the hog" like I had when I was younger (mainly because I didn't know how to cook it), but I was still into the whole "soul food" thing because that was my heritage. Shit, they even made a movie about it so it had to be good. Well, two summers ago my aunt from Mississippi came up to visit me (i'm in VA) and she proceeded to cook me some bacon, in the sausage grease (when I said something she got mad as hell), buttered bread that dripped butter, and fried potatoes, biscuits and grits for breakfast. My head hurt so bad that day but I had no clue why. Then she did it again the next day, and my head killed me the entire day again. It was then that my girl suggested that I go to the doctor. I told him what I'd eaten and he told me that I could die if I continued to eat like that. I'M 31 YEARS OLD! I still eat lean ground beef, steak, turkey and turkey bacon (it's good, for real), and I must admit that I do grab a slice of regualr bacon or one hot link but BLACK PEOPLE, just because "soul food" is in our culture doesn't mean that it's right. Do a little research and read about the origin of soul food. The people that died for us did so so that we wouldn't have to eat this shit, man! I ate that shit when I was younger because my folks did. I didn't know any better. This is my motto and I want everybody to apply this when you learn from a mistake or learn something true. "WHEN YOU KNOW BETTER, DO BETTER". That's the realest shit you can ever tell yourself. Motherfcukers with goals and aspirations will never piss on your dreams, only those that have no plans or desire to get more will say something negative about your ambition. Those are the one that will always be at the bottom of that barrell. Those are the ones that are always saying "I'm keeping it real." True shit.

You don't have to soak everything in lard to enjoy soul food. And if you were picking 150lbs of cotton a day, and running away from ofay, you'd be craving some substantial food too. Nowadays you have to cut back some fool. Just stop being a typical American, no self-control buffalo about everything you put in your mouf and you'll be okay.
