Pharcyde - "Drop"

Posted on December 1, 2005 11:35 AM

Throwback Thursday has returned, my good friends! Today we're going to do a video we should have done a looooong ass time ago.

pharcyde[1].jpg

I'd like to start off by saying fuck Coldplay, and fuck MTV with a splintered broomhandle. "Clocks" won video of the year. Where the fuck is Pharcyde's award for one of the best videos ever made in ANY genre? The video for "Drop" [watch it now] should have its own spot in the Smithsonian or something. All-World Director Spike Jonze had a stellar vision and went to flucking work. MTV, y'all need to go back and fix this transgression. If Pharcyde was Nirvana they wouldn't have just gotten awards for this video, they would have gotten obligatory blowjobs from Idalis as they accepted.

I'd usually make an obligatory drug joke here, and while they very well may have been influenced by some bomb Cali herbals or some of that PCP water Loco and O.G. Killa Bobby Johnson's wife was smokin, this video is a creative masterpiece and represents a time we seem to have completely let go of as a hip-hop nation. Sure there's a place for everything, but we appear to ONLY be represented by a small corner of the hip-hop universe today.

As I get down off my soapbox, I'm simultaneously taking the time to enjoy and appreciate EVERYTHING having to be done backward here... including talking! They weren't fucking standing around playing guitars watching leaves fall. We got niggas falling down stairs, stripping, dancing, and maintaining relative unison as if it were done normally... and they did it damn near 10 years ago.

Yes, these guys are a bunch of weirdos, but they made some hot shit! Besides, weirdness and genius are usually not too far off from one another. Ask R. Kelly (then go get him a half gallon of orange juice).

Dammit white folks, first you steal Rock 'N Roll. Now this?! Don't nobody want a nigga havin shit! I'm calling for Imani, Booty Brown, Slim Kid Tre and Fat Lip's reparations today! I AM somebody!

Questions? Comments? Requests? How's your clock feeling today, BITCH?! ronnie_mexxx@yahoo.com

P.S.: Tomorrow it's all about WHOOOOOOOOO'S HOUSE?... So get yourselves ready. I hope you got out all your comments about Run's daughters asses last week.

  • I can't front, this was a good choice for the throwback video. These cats were truly underrated. I do believe that if the Beastie Boys would've done some shit like this it would've been called "groundbreaking". No diss to the Beasties, I still think Paul Revere is one of the illest joints ever. And that was 10 years ago?!! Damn!

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHA... damn nigga, you killin' me with that "hot like diahrrea".

But yeah... Pharcyde was and still is my favorite Hip Hop group. They were very original way back before ODB or Redman but their unique stamp on being funny and staying true to there craft!

Never will be a group like em'!

  • Nategrey... I am big fan of Spike Jonze's videos. I can't believe I forgot to mention him in the blog today. That has been remedied.

I should be tarred and feathered right next to the MTV execs.

Big ups an respeck to da bruva Spike Jonze who az directed such classicks az Crookyln, Do Da Right Fing, School Daze, 101 Dalmatians and countless videos ov da 'ip-'op persuasion!

    Boo-ya-ka-sha!

Spike Jonze did better with the "What's Up, Fat Lip?", IMO. Not to diss "Drop", because that was a cool video, especially considering the myriad of horrible rap vids (thanks for nothing, Hype Williams, you no-talent ass-clown). That said, a "reverse" effect isn't exactly the hardest camera/editing trick to pull off. The gimmick wore off quick for me.

The other video I mentioned was sheer comedy, though, if a bit bittersweet because it does seem rather morose.

And for sure, the Spike Jonze DVD is the best sub-$20 DVD I ever bought, besides the Michel Gondrey DVD (both are wicked music video directors).

  • dubious race politics make for some ill-informed comments mate. how could the white man have stolen this idea when spike jonze was white to begin with.
this video is an absolute classic though, and it does get praise as far as i know, and that prbably cool with them.

the dubious race politics you refer to was obviously a joke.
i know spike jonze is white. it was a crack on coldplay.

    don't get it all twisted.

if you took that to heart and missed the joke, it's probably because you're an uptight [white?] dude, and i've got no answer or cure for that.

i'm not joking about the clocks video tho.

  • melvis,

no, the effect wasn't difficult, but the idea was clever and i'm sure the execution took more work than you'd think.

  • definantly one of the fuckin illest videos ever made without a doubt. whats crazy is that these niggaz was ill ass housers from the old school dancing and taggin days that were real prevalent in early L.A. hip hop days like 89, 90, 91 and so on. with dance crews like the, rainbows, and the majestics, these niggas would be doing shit with they bodies that made them look like fuckin human slinky's and shit. taggin crews like the NBT and the KWS battle back then made L.A. hiphop raw. these niggas came from that shit and I will always love them for reppin what we was livin, word up!

  • November 15 was the 10-year anniversary of this CD coming out. One of the hip-hop channels on XM played the whole damn album start to finish that night, and had 3 cats in the studio reminiscin' and talking about the album in between tracks. They made a good point- there hasn't been a quality 4-man group of MCs since Pharcyde broke up.

They talked a lot about this video too and had nothin' but love...

  • Ron is right it's fucked up this didn't win a VMA. But Spike Jonze can win for the Beastie Boys "Sabotage",(which was a good video, but this ones better). But Ron you forgot the Susan Lucci of the VMA's, Busta. He had the illest bugged out videos, but had to spend well over a mil and have Janet (Pre Tittygate) to win. I request "Gimme Some More" as the next throwback.

  • Busta = Susan Lucci?

    2 points my nigga!

...yes, we will do some Busta videos. He deserves the loves.

  • I request "Blue Cheese" by the UMC's as Throwback Video. It was a hot song back then but when you see the video now, they had to spend like 250 buck on it!

"Drop" was a HOT ass video. No the effect was not difficult to create...the acting by the artists was probably harder. It is the IDEA that was genius!

  • I'm an uptight white guy too... yeehar.. a honky!! Am i welcome on this site?? Or have i just ruined it's cool-factor?? That pharcyde vid is 'ill'.... dudes!
Nah, serious it's shit-hot.. I saw it back in 96 when i was a just a young girl... If you're blown away by the backwards thing then try the time-lapse thing... Early 90's British dance act called The Orb made a classic time-lapse piece called 'The Box'. The vid involved a woman dressed in black walking through busy city streets.. Thing is everything is whizzing around her at a phenomenal rate... meaning that this chick was literally standing and moving ever-so slowly while a whole day goes by just for ten seconds of video where she literally moves ten metres down the road... It's quite amazing.. or 'phat'.. cb
