Beenie Man - "King Of The Dancehall"

Damn, did I love the $3 movie theater!

You know… That’s the place where they show movies that ain’t even been out of the theaters that long. That’s what today’s throwback is gonna be. I was just building with the local dread man the other night and we were discussing reggae/dancehall music. At some point after the Backwoods had gone around a few times I confessed that I loved this song. Expecting ridicule and perhaps a chop with the machete, I was pleasantly surprised by the dread’s emphatic reaction. “Nah, breddrin! Yuh DONE know Beenie Man KING uh di dance hall! Big big tyune dat!” I then proceeded to tell him that in his honor (and in honor of the banana boat-smuggled skunk), this week’s edition of Throwback Thursday would be “King Of The Dancehall” [watch it now] Welcome him!

With that crown on Beenie Man looks like a Jamaican Jughead. Lucking, he doesn’t have to share none of this punany with Archie. Nigga got Betty, Veronica, Reggie and Mr. Weatherbee p-poppin on a handstand!

Seriously, in such a homophobic culture, why do the male dances look twice as effeminate as the women’s dances. If a nigga danced like that in an American club without other West Indians around, they’d be called the one thing they hate the most, a “batty mon.” I’ve seen a nigga push up on a Jamaican dude after he just got finished doing the fucking butterfly for 15 minutes to Maxi Priest love songs and get swung on for approaching. I felt pretty bad for the batty mon. I thought to myself “Damn Donovan! The ‘For Sale’ sign was up. How you gonna crack a nigga for inquiring within?”

The video is shot in black-and-white. As cool a feature as this is, it’s obviously primarily in place to avoid showing how high Beenie Man is. I saw him on 106 and Park one day around the time this shit came out. Nigga didn’t even know his own name. He looked like a programmed Jamaican robot, kinda like The Predator, who did his job just fine but could only repeat what others said.

Note the king’s getup. This is not a costume. This is how Jamaican people dress to go to the club. That’s right. My culture always leads the league in line-steps with dress. Be careful next time you invite one of my cousins and shit to your party. The nigga might show up trying to make a green, purple and orange-yellow combination work. We obviously like to blind niggas. (Another reason why the video is black-and-white. In Jamaica it’s shown in all of it’s glorious color.)

It's also really funny to notice that the king of the dancehall, one of the sickest to ever chant that shit... is dancing on a chessboard looking like some wealthy slave-owner's chess piece. Song is fire... Video is kinda suspect.

    Tell your "batty mon" friend that there is a way to tell a Freshie (what we call them up here), a fake freshie, and a gay guy. A freshie wears clothes that fit..none of that hanging off the ass.     I actually love this song and video. For a dancehall video it's of high quality. I really don't have anything bad to say.
