Little Brother feat. Joe Scudda - "Lovin' It"

Posted on September 19, 2005 10:56 AM

Do I smell... why yes... those ARE chitterlings on the stove! SWEET!

little_brother2.jpg

Phonte, Big Pooh and 9th Wonder are back... and they brought some swine with them. Actually the first video single off of their new album "The Minstrel Show" is more about playing to an underground crowd than it is to boiling out your pig intestines like grandma did. "Lovin' It" [watch it now] feat. Joe Scudda, for some strange reason, is The Negro Channel's public enemy #1. Watch along with me and see if you can help me figure out why, because I'm baffled. This is one of the least threatening (cough cough... and entertaining) videos I've seen in a while.

I dunno about "Lovin' It." This shit is just aaaaight to me. But what's all the fuss aboot?

I saw a team of Erykah Badus in the front row. These niggas better be careful. Next album Phonte gonna have on a turban. Keep fuckin around, fellas. Nigga’s clothes will never match again. People gonna be like “I used to love these cats before they went all weird and one of ‘em started dressing like Little Richard.”

What did I tell you all about bathroom skeetin?! You both could end up with a disease you didn’t get from your sex partner! THEN what do you do? You can't even call them up mad! You coulda got it from the stall! How do you explain that rash on your titty? Oh yeah... You might have got that when he BENT YOU OVER THE TOILET SEAT! Nasty asses! Can’t you smell the shit, anyway? There is a nigga ACTIVELY shitting in the stall next to you.

Isn’t Phonte in Slum Village too? *Rick James chuckle*

Pooh strangely reminds me of a chunky version of Michael Jai White when he masterfully played Mike Tyson. He got that little Raekwon affect.

Joe Scudda? What is this? White rapper relief aid? I am by no means one of those cats who thinks white people shouldn’t rap, but damn… I guess he benefited from affirmative action or somethin. You know how we call black folks wit a little Asian in 'em “blackanese?” This cat is either “crackanese” or joins the annals of the “touchdowns.” The cat looks at least 4th and goal.

In all seriousness, I couldn’t explain why BET deemed this video “too intelligent” for their viewers. They’ve been undermining the intelligence of black people for years now, but this shit is a public affront to our very culture and heritage. Besides, I don’t even see anything all that dense in the video. I guess the image of boxes marked “gangsta” and other such stereotypes about us that the The Negro Channel sell the world should have been marked "guns," "drugs" and "stolen shit." Maybe Little Brother should have cracked a case of Colt 45 for ya, boss?

Y’all fuckers wonder why I hate BET so much.

  • The video is aiiight.

I don't think BET thinks this video is too intelligent for it's viewers, they just haven't been broken off with the proper payola.

If you wanna know what Michael Jackson would've looked like if he kept his original nose, rocked urban apparel, AND still bleached his skin....meet Joe Scudda.

  • Before I join in on the festivities Ron, I must offer a correction. That is, this song is off 'The Minstrel Show', not the Chitlin Circuit. Small details....

Now, back to the topic at hand. Now, I like these dudes, I do, but I also wonder where the supreme intelligence of the video lies.

I understand that they are trying to mock the stereotypes of rap videos, and I applaud the concept, but if you're gonna do it, you damn well better come with something as creative and on point as The Roots' 'What They Do' video. This, my friends, is no 'Waht They Do'. You just can't bring subtlety into it when you're trying to clown paople. It needs to smack people upside their heads. That smack is something the folks that run and watch the Negro Channel so desperately need. So, it's not that it's too intelligent, it's that it's just not obnoxious enough.

As for the LB boys themselves, 9th Wonder is just that. Dude looks like a alien, straight up. First off, would it kill Phonte and Pooh to share some leftovers with the man? Yeah, he's underground, I think them two lock his ass up in the basement, stuffing him and the MPC in a trunk Pulp Fiction style, and not letting his ass out to eat until there's a hot beat to work with.

I heard Ethiopians are calling up Sally Struthers, telling her 'We're okay, but send that 9th boy some food.'

Pooh looks like Raekwon, but got raps like U-God. Reach deep in your pockets and get what it takes to send one lyrical stairmaster to the home of Big Pooh, I think there might be some room for it between the deep fryer and the rotisserie oven.

Joe Scudda though, damn. 4th & Goal indeed, I think you can find him on top of the uprights. Whoever gave him the Fisher Price 'My First Beard Shaper' should be ashamed of themselves. If you can dig even deeper in your pockets, someone get this man a copy of 'Step Your Game Up For Dummies'. I personally wanna see him battling the white dude from No Limit's 'Tight Whips' video, if in fact they aren't the same guy.

All that aside, I like the beat for this joint A LOT (9th must have lived in that gimp trunk for a week to bang this one out), and only good can come to those whom BET won't give any airplay.

  • All of you guys posting up here are cornballs. From the guy who works at sohh.com by not knowing the name of the album to all the rest of you herbs. LB is by far the brightest star on the hip-hop horizon and I mean real hip-hop with thought provoking lyrics and soulful soundscapes. BET was right after all and that is a down right shame. Mintrel Show *ss N***az.

  • do your damn homework mexico. weak editorial like this degrades the overall quality of the site.

i mean, you really didn't know the name of the album? there are banners all over sohh with that shit and you still don't know?

the badu-like chicks? represents the far left afrocentric neo-soul attitude. the white dude with the sideshow bob haircut with the giant headphones and backpack? represents backpackers. the dudes with the ammo and bulletproof vest are the 50 cents of the rap game... and they're all at an LB concert and they felt the music, which is what LB is all about.

i went to the show at slims in SF, and it looked just like the video. all types of hip hop heads in there. but you got the video's premise, right?

maybe BET was right... that shit WAS to intelligent for most of yall. go read a book or something.

FYI: 9th doesn't use an MPC. he uses fruity loops exclusively.

  • Fine, they stuck him in the gimp trunk with a laptop. My apologies.

And in defense of myself and the group, as I said, I really, really like LB, I just find this video to be amusing, not as intelligent as the folks at that station claim and therefore clownable.

Just because you clown family, doesn't mean they ain't still family people!

  • First of all... the Chitlin Circuit thing was an accident. Pardon me... can a nigga not slip? I had chitlin circuit on my mind... but i knew the album title. The ad is on this page every 10 seconds. A mistake... It's fixed.

2... If you don't like Little Brother... you just don't like Little Brother... that's it. You don't have to hate hip-hop. Don't be a self-righteous asswipe.

    3. I think we all have a common respose to BET's bullshit. Some of you nerds just want to pick a fight because it seems like the cool thing to do. Like P said... take some action. Write some letters.

    4. Excellent point Dirty Cash. The insult is so subtle, you really can't tell what they are trying to do. "What They Do" is a case-study on video satire... We're definitely dusting that one off sometime soon.

    ...by far the brightest star...

    just a LITTLE bit objective?

  • I like the concept, but like a lot of LB's music- it just was a little soft.

Blind love for this video looks as tainted as blind love for every 50 Cent video by G-Unit fans or every Jim Jones video by Dip Set riders.

It's good, but not great. Don't lose your brain when your intelli-hop group du jour comes out with something average. It is what it is.

  • Yo this Video SUCKED, and LB sucks, everyone is calling them HIP HOP, but the only reason yall are even saying that is because of LACK of hip hip out there right now. If we were back in the early 90's when most of yall were in diapers this shit would get NO love, but since we are not back in the day people show this crap love because of the lack of REAL hip hop!

P.S Leave ron alone for making a mistake, like yall nigga's have never fucked up. Alot of yall need to learn how to spell before you start dissing ron!

  • Yo, smokey! what have you been smoking. You said that if they came out back in the day they wouldn't be real hip-hop? why is it then that so many hip-hop greats have given nothing but love to LB and Justus League? Artist like Big Daddy Kane,Q-Tip,Pete Rock,Masta Ace,Dj Jazzy Jeff,Jay-z,The Roots,Black Moon/Boot Camp! Do you even know what real hip-hop is?...obviuosly not. You are probably some white kid in diapers living in the suburbs and think that real hip-hop started with Master P or Nelly.Kick rocks you clone!

  • Jay-Z gave love to 9th Wonder...

Everyone else on your list would do a show with anyone who made sure the cash was there.

But I do agree Smokey made some hasty remarks. Little Brother isn't quite my cup of tea, but I wouldn't go as far as to say they wouldn't have made it in another time. They got some quality shit.

However, he too makes a valid point in that as people search for an alternative, sometimes all you have to do is be saying the right thing at the right time to make it.

I think LB is somewhere between those 2 extremes.

  • Mr. Mexico I am not talking about doing shows. 9th wonder and Buckshot did a whole album toghether called "Chemistry", Big Daddy Kane is on the Chitlin' Circuit-"Welcome to Durham", Jazzy Jeff is on The Minstrel Show doing what he does best-cutting and transforming and I did not even mention the underground cut that they did with Kanye and Consequence. LB may not be your cup of tea and that is cool because everyone has their own unique tastes, but as they say game recognizes game and their is no way on God's green earth that artist of the caliber that I just listed would collab with just anyone. I am not saying LB is the second coming but they are legit. Also, as far as people searching for an alternative-people have always done that,I mean that is what drives the Underground and why artist can still eat and survive because people always want an alternative to mainstream Hip-Hop. You sound like 50 saying that Kanye blew because he was the next guy up to bat with something different to say.Yeah that's true, but the main reason is because Kanye is dope!

  • Yup. I would have to agree. These guys are tight. I can't believe they are from NC. They sound so mid/late 90's east coast. They remind of a combination of Camp lo/De la/Pete Rock/Tribe and Black Moon all tied into one.

(if that any logic to it) Lol.

Seriously though, Joe Scudda is the weak link in the song, but he ain't messing the song up though.

Lovin it is a hot track.
