SOHH All-Access: Redman - "Rush The Security"

Posted on August 26, 2005 4:53 PM

This weekend we’re doing something special for y’all. Ron Mexico is going to take you on an SOHH All-Access, behind-the-scenes look at the making of Redman’s new video “Rush The Security.”

redman.jpg

That’s right. Funk Doc is back and long overdue! Courtesy of director J. Jesses Smith, (who has directed some of your favorite videos, you just don’t know it) Ronnie Mexxx got the first hand scoop from the director’s seat and beyond… Of course, I’m going to share with you, our loyal readers.

J. Jess and Redman were able to pack 2 days worth of shooting into one. Unlike what you may come to expect from such icons, they proved egoless, threw the workboots on and got it done.

Starting at 10AM, staying true to one of the track’s first lines, the first shot is set for Redman to “walk on water.” Ass-tired, everyone meets up at the heliport on 23rd Street in New York City. "Hey, Redman? What are we gonna do with that there helicopter?"

Apparently J. Jess’ vision was to descend to the East River from the friendly skies. Why the fuck not, right?… and if you are going to put your life on the line in a helicopter for your video, you might as well do it just blazed! What’s better than getting high and staying there?

Part 2 of the video shoot found us in Williamsburg, Brooklyn in the Williamsburg-hipster-famous Galapagos artspace. This is where the security is going to be rushed… but not after Redman does some shots in front of a ginormous fan.

Donning a white “GORILLA HOUSE – GOTTI CLICK” T-shirt and blue fatigues, Redman immediately made me wonder “Dude, aren’t you sweating your balls off in that shit?” Some of his entourage members were kind enough to run inside and grab him some paper towels. I guess the fan here serves more than one purpose, huh. It was definitely about 95 degrees out without a speck of shade.

Said entourage members wore the same T-shirts in a wide array of whites and blacks (the only acceptable colors for true gangstas). Interestingly enough, they stood shoulder-to-shoulder in perfect harmony with the brand new yuppie white-girl residents of Williamsburg just passing through catching a glimpse of their favorite rapper. I heard one of them yell “Hey! That’s the guy from the Right Guard commercial!” Ah, the Power Stripe was good for something, because it damn sure don’t keep your underarms fresh (I’m a Mitchum man, myself).

As we move inside it’s finally break time. Caterers hooked up my favorite scene: The Mess Hall Shot. Not an ACTUAL shot, just folks chilling and eating in the performance space before the final Galapagos shots. Downtime activities included, but were not limited to: smoking blunts filled with “boodah” or “dat shit,” kissing up to Island Def Jam exec Lenny S., acting important on cell phones and being ignored by video hoes.

After chicken and Sprite, a nigga gotta go take a leak, right? So I make my way to the bathroom to find that a shot is being set up there. After navigating around lighting, wires and screens, I finally get my leak on. While washing my hands I realize that this is a disgusting place to shoot. I think to myself THAT shit will be a grimy experience for sure.” Many a stankin’ ass has graced the space. I don’t think it was cleaned after the [insert garage band here] show last night! The shit needed some of Redman’s Potty Freshener, for sure. Red knows what I’m talking about… he had to stand in there for what seemed like an hour.

Ron, why would a bathroom shot take an hour? Glad you asked, dear! After all had been set up and Redman, his trusty blunt, “security” and video ho du jour had taken their places, director J. Jesses Smith asked a very important question: “Where the fuck is the soundman?!”

Uh, oh. With no soundman to be found, Redman and a video girl sweating like slaves in the bathroom and the director getting a little testy, I could tell that shit was about to hit the fan. J. Jess then proceeded to ask around “Am I on Punk’d? Oh, that’s what this shit is! I’m on Punk’d. Somebody bring out Asthon.” With frustrations mounting, Redman decided to break the tension in his own special way… with a spontaneous song. Funk Doc belted out a chorus of “It’s 102 degreeeeeeees in this muthafuckaaaaaaaa!” This promted another mini-break until the soundman arrived with the playback properly edited for the shot.

Where did the video girls come from? They came from a company that will remain nameless, but I must say, even to my surprise, the ladies were treated like cattle. While everyone roamed the set freely, the “talent” (as they were called by their overseers) were quarantined to a small green room on the side and kept tabs on. If one of them got away, there would be a company-T-shirted chaperone to corral her and make sure she’s waiting in the bullpen until it’s time to shoot. I guess they’ve lost “talent” before. I know… the chicken parm is pretty enticing. I was more disturbed by the bullpen than I was by the entourage members housing bottles from the bar and drinking them on the street corner. If this is how it always goes, they need a video ho union or something. The game must be reformed I say!

I was wondering whether this is what the video girls actually look like in real life, or did they order the D-package. You know… 30 video hoes for $1100 or some shit like that. I was later informed that the more prominently featured girls were hand-picked. I guess the others came from the bargain bin, so to speak.

Soon thereafter, the ladies are freed from their stable and directed to the main performance area for the bar shot. The one special girl allowed behind the bar with Red and the Gotti Click seems more concerned with her hair than the scene being filmed. I was thinking they were gonna hit her with the G-thang 40 oz pour. But alas, she was spared! Luckily for her Redman is a cool dude. Ironically, Redman may have been the most humble and respectful person on the set. The entourage dudes and $45 video hoes walking around with their noses in the air were heavily outclassed by the star. Something’s wrong with that.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a monster truck in a rap video. No, wait. Cowboy Troy had one, I think. Redman’s is much better than his shit though. What better vehicle to “Rush The Security” with than a fucking monster truck?

Overall it was a great day. The shoot was highly efficient. The cast and crew headed by director J. Jesses Smith and producer Mario Romeo were on point, professional and for the most part cordial. They made me feel right at home… Just as if I were in my apartment watching the videos we rag on a daily basis. Red is a down-to-earth brother who stresses loyalty, an often forgotten quality in the music business. Be sure to look out for the SOHH All-Access exclusive with J. Jess next week.

Have a lovely weekend… with your stankin’ asses.
