Damn, is it [Throwback] Thursday already?
Continuing in our commitment to provide you with quality throwbacks… (not just shit that happens to be out of the mainstream rotation), we proudly present a Grand Puba-less Brand Nubian with a true classic song and video combination. “Punks Jump Up To Get Beat Down” [watch it now] is not just a classic combination of long song titles and pre-pop attitude, but it’s got a collection of beatdown shots that would never be allowed on MTV or The Negro Channel anymore.
That’s right, the Wild Cowboy and the dude from Oz are stealin on niggas left and right for a collection of reasons. Lord Jamar does it to protect his paper stack, while Sadat X goes the Arrested Development route and defends his own honor on the D train.
While definitely dated, the video was obviously shot with skilled camera work and high quality film. Anything less would make the scenarios look far more contrived than they actually are. I remember watching that video with my mother on Video Music Box and her saying “Yeah, fuckin right.”

Continuing down the road of the unbelievable, the best beatdown comes when a moron tries to roll up on Lord Jamar with a gun, only to have it taken from him and his arm held while DJ Sincere leaps from the top rope to begin the beatdown shot to end all beatdown shots. This video taught children a very important lesson in 1993: Even if with a gun, a punk ass bitch is a punk ass bitch. But I must say, fuck “Parental Advisory” the video should come with a “Don’t Try This At Home” warning. You don’t wanna get shot in the chest trying to be like Lord Jamar.
Then again, you wouldn’t want to get shanked in the shower either.
Oh, the irony! There was gangsta shit left and right, on the TV, radio... in our HOUSE... and here my mother was telling me "Listen Ronnie! Don't be like them POSITIVE rappers! They're a bad influence."
I tell you what, Puba missed out on a good one. He coulda knocked a few niggas out on camera. It might have been good for his career, which took a massive nosedive after “360 (What Goes Around)” and his appearance on Mary J. Blige’s “What’s The 411.” Imagine that, he missed out on the beatdown that could have prolonged his career.

'Twas funny as a mofo when Martin said, "Punks step up to get beat down." in his show--right before he got knocked the fuck out. I'll always remember that episode when I hear this song--Good job Mex for throwin it back...
