No... that's not a misspelling. JZ is Jay-Z... just before he added some letters and punctuations to the moniker.
Before there was “The Hova” there was “The Nubian King” and “The Flunkie.” The painfully ironic prequel to “Nigga What, Nigga Who (Originators ‘99)” is a Jaz-O classic circa ten years older. In the midst of all of the Nubian talk on “Originators,” [watch it now] not only was Jay-Z supposed to be selling crack, but he looks like he may have been one of his own best customers.
Kid 'N Play saw this video like “Whew… Nothing to worry about here! Let’s practice that kickstep some more though.”

Jay-Z is by far the most awkward man I’ve ever seen. My favorite aspect of the video is watching Jay dance to the lyrics coming out of Jaz’ mouth. Sad… just sad. If you would have thought that this man would be the #1 rapper in the game and dating someone as fine and talented as Beyonce one day, I’d tell you to stop smoking with Pookie. Ironically enough, I’m not sure if Beyonce was born when this shit came out.
I can totally understand Nas' surprise at Jay-Z's rise to power. He was probably at home in 1999 like "Jay-Z?... That skinny nigga on the boat? He sold WHAT?"

Ron, for some reason this link isn't working right. I do remember this video though and you made some excellent observations. By the way have you heard Jaz O's "Kings County" album? It came out a few years ago but I thought it was pretty descent compared to other albums that were out around the same time.

I knew Jay-Z was in another group before he made it big. I know I saw him on Rap City singing in someone's song, but I never could figure out who. Jay did a lot of bullshit to sell records, but he also made a lot of amazing songs on a high lyrical level.
Jay-Z IS respected on the streets. Probably moreso than half the rappers you named... but it isn't even about that.
It should be about skills and creativity, things that Jay-Z forsook at times for the sake of making money (which he always admitted), but displayed when he could within the grand scheme of things. (Which doesn't make putting out bullshit RIGHT.) At the heart of it all was the talented youngster who wanted to be heard that we see doing the shuffle in this video. If anything this video is proof that Jay would do ANYTHING to get on. Whatever the people were feeling, he was gonna do. If they wanted pro-black, he would do it. If they wanted gangstas, he'd rap about that. If they wanted parkin lot pimpin... it's time to pop the trunk.
Jay-Z was a businessman first and a rapper second. Unfortunately, that has to be your mentality when you are trying not to float face down in the mainstream.
While we can't tell what would have happened if Pac or Big never passed, I do agree that Jay-Z probably would have been to BIG as AZ was to Nas.
Unfortunately you've strayed from the point. Hip hop comes from the streets... it's street culture. But the artform of rapping is something anyone can do and appreciate. There is good rap music that isn't necessarily street. I'd rather a rapper be skilled and honest than try to be "street" if they are not.
Finally, Nas, Snoop, Meth & Red, Biggie, Jada and Kurupt have all forsaken talent and "respect" for a crack at commercial success. Nas' career almost parallels Jay's. How could you act like Nas doesn't have an extensive catalogue of bullshit as well. Snoop... are you serious? He's worse than Jay. Jay-Z talks about himself being such a big time drug dealer in late 80's early 90's,but with the way he look's in this video I don't think he sold that many drugs.I grew up in that time era and big time drug dealers had dope cloth's and rides,he look's pretty cheesy in this video.
