G. Dep feat. P. Diddy & Black Rob - "Let's Get It"

Posted on July 28, 2005 11:58 AM

Taking it back just a little bit, this week’s "Throwback Thursday" comes to us courtesy of Bad Boy. Their slogan: “We drop the artists, so you don’t have to!”

g-dep.jpg

On a loooong list of artists given the cold shoulder by Papa Diddy Pop, G. Dep stormed onto the scene “Let’s Get It” [watch it now] the unofficial Harlem Shake anthem. With the aid Harlem hound P. Diddy, fellow Johnson Projects mainstay Black Rob and some gyrating children, G. Dep immediately made his mark on the rap world by making sure we NEVER want to hear this beat again!

For all my basketball heads... Doesn't Dep kinda look like a strung-out Tony Delk?

One of the more talented MCs to get mainstream recognition out of Harlem, Dep’s future looked pretty bright on the heels of this and both versions of “Special Delivery.” To his credit, Puffy actually gave this man 4 videos on his leadoff album. Unfortunately Dep was still unable to break the gold threshold and was soon relieved of duties with Bad Boy AKA Cutcha Records.

I swore that I’d never watch this video again. It came on TV every 15 minutes for upwards of 8 months. Solely responsible for the Harlem Shake craze that seized our nation for nearly 2 years, this video is a blur of nonsense that tries to merge the classic Bad Boy white background video with the jiggy flashiness Puffy had come to personify.

The only people doing the Harlem Shake now are really young white kids. If someone could explain that phenomenon to me, I’d greatly appreciate it. I’m talking about kids who would have been about 4 years old when this video came out. (Not the high school senior in Iowa that does it. He’s just sad.)

The little girl in the Fendi jacket looked like Xzibit’s daughter. Her shake was also kinda on the lackluster side for being in the official Harlem Shake video. Puffy could have picked up any child under age 10 off of any street in Harlem and gotten a quality shaking for the camera.

For what he had to work with, Dep did pretty well. With the exception of the “fish and spaghetti” line, he did the best he could with merging his unorthodox delivery with the jiggiest, Puffiest beat this side of 1998. Sometimes I wonder what Dep is doing today.

Take a walk down memory lane with me. Practice your Harlem Shake in the privacy of your own bedroom. Ask you mom to make some fish and spaghetti for dinner someday soon. These are just a few things we can do in honor and memory of yet another fallen soldier of Bad Boy records.

Questions? Comments? Requests? Been smacked silly? Been smacked silly? ronnie_mexxx@yahoo.com

P.S.: If Black Rob could ever stay out of jail, the combination of Dep, Puff and Robbie O (3 The Hard Way) could have been a decent group. If he were in Cali he'd be doing about 4 life sentences.

  • Oh Shit!!!!This was G Dep's joint?!!! I thought it was Puffy's. He was bumping his gums more than the mc's. I'm sure we could probably find G on the block in Harlem. The Special Delivery video was foreshadowing. As Robert Townsed stated, "There's always work at the Post Office."

p.s. you can upgrade to a harlem shake with your happy meal for only 89 cents.

  • Dep was hot for his time at Bad Boy, but let's face it....He was just another one of Puff's show dogs that he pranced around the music track and since he didn't win no ribbons he's back to being a stray. C'mon check the Bad Boy kennel

G dep,Kaine,Marc Curry,Loon,Da Band,Mario Winans,(no disrespect)what happened to the gospel cd Puff was supposed to put out? He had his time, let's put the career to sleep.

  • If I ruled the world I would mandate that Puffy never be allowed to take his shirt off in a video ever again!

QUESTION: Why is G Dep sporting the MJ look with one white glove on? The closest I've ever been to seeing someone in Harlem with a white glove is a crackhead's ashy hand.

I wonder what will happen to the kids Diddy exploited in the video. How will they cope as adults knowing they were in a video that spawned the creation of the most played out dance move ever?

You forgot to include DREAM and Total in the "Bad Boy" kennel BIG DUB. Otherwise, 10 points for the joke! HA HA! (Am I even allowed to give points?)

  • G-Dep's unorthodox flow prohibits listeners from appreciating the fact that he does have rhyme skill. The new joint "The Godfather" does show the true potential of 3 The Hard Way. They have some kinda harlem cohesiveness. U guys are funny as hell and make a few points. Ron and the rest of you guys keep it up. I need this to get through work. Oh and I like Ma$e not the new Mase and leave Pac outta this unless Ron blogs one of his videos. Matter of fact that's a request Ron get at a Pac video pleeeeease.

  • The Bad Boy era is long done and gone. I used to be a fan, but damn Diddy's on his 5th supposed comeback and the hottest and highest selling artist on his label (which is sad if u didn't catch the sarcasm). I'm just glad to see G-Dep is back....the 12 step program must of work....cause during his run with Bad Boy dude got STRUNG THE FUCK OUT on that okie doke (crack/coke). Sad to say he should've took his talents to Fed Express...i'd write him a letter of recommendation after the "Special Delivery" video, cause his rap career is shot. There's always life as a Diddy flunky though -just rapping in the studio for the next 10 years knowing your album is never dropping, carrying luggage, babysitting his kids, cleaning his pool, or taking the fall for him (guarantee you'll go gold)-

P.S. - Total is in the studio

  • July 29, 2005 11:52 AM

  • Shiiit..fucking around with Puff you're either off the label or always "in the studio". That cat is slipping. I mean do you really believe this dude has a pulse on music anymore? Look at the girl group he tried to put together which wasn't put together. The P in P.Diddy now stands for procrastination.

    take that...take that

  • wot makes me laugh about u n!ggas is the lack of appreciation. that video was big (back in the day). but obviously times have changed. i cant turn round and say that the video is sh!t.
plus gdep is more of a rapper than mc.
he is like fat joe, snoop dogg and 50 cent (only recently tho). his voice is just blessing the instrumental.
if ya boy lloyd banks was on it we wud b w8in 4 the punchlines at the end of every 4th bar.
the sound of u h8rs make me laugh tho.
p.diddy is a legend it dont matta if the bad boy era is gone it was here and it was powerful.
just think about mo money mo problems and feels so good both classic (hype williams) videos.
u lot dont put nuthin in 2 perspective.

sorry about my slang typing, its a real bad habit.

  • that has nothing to do with anything...

1... we crack on videos... that's it.

2... this was shitty when it came out too...

3... fuck lloyd banks... but you find it okay to down him in a quest to validate puffy... interesting.

4... it's a problem when someone's legacy has effect on the way listeners perceive what is actually in front of them in the present.

  • the song is called "Hush Lil' Lady". It's by Corey ft. Lil'Romeo n Lil' Reema

I think tha song came out in 2002

Lil'Reema was a cheerleader in this video (this is all off of memory because I can't find the video, so if it's wrong sorry). She does a terrible harlem shake in the video

2 refresh some memories the chorus goes:
    Hush little lady
    Don't you cry
    Gonna bet that
    I could show you
How to have a good time
    Like me and you
    Playin' after school
    On the weekend
At the skating rink'll be cool

    Remma's Verse:
When I come through, know me
I'm Reema, you know I'm too fly
    Kinda cute too, that's right
    What you gon do
Now you know how I do
When you, see me it's cool
See I, can't get wit you
Cuz you remind me of a boy I knew

As usually Diddy shuffles through another video, and call it dancing. I thought the little girl was mean muggin a little hard, maybe she's Babs little sister, (poor child, gonna grow up to be a brick faced rapper). She did bust Diddy's ass with the shake, which is another dance grown men shouldn't do. Kids do it cute, you do it, you look borderline spastic and epilectic. Black Rob actually took a break from his life's passion, incarceration. How the hell do you become a professional inmate? Diddy should build a studio in Rikers so this nigga can finish out his deal.My favorite line is "Not guilty cuase I'm filthy", too bad Shine wasn't.

  • Aw man. I can't believe I'm hearing this same old crap again.

I'm actually a HUGE bad boy fan. Loon was nice, Dep was nice, Rob, Biggie, Shyne, Mase, Da Band, Winans, Thomas, LOX. Damn! I was a HUGE Bad Boy fan back in the day...grew up on those dudes.

Let's get it is on heavy rotation on my ipod playlist, as is Special delivery.

But let's be honest for a second. While Puff does make money, the stuff he's putting out is garbage and the talented artists under his label don't deserve it. LOOK at what happened to New Edition (!!!).

On a whole 'nother subject, I can't stand the whole "Tupac" bullcrap. As soon as someone says they don't like Tupac, it's like you dissed someone's mother or talked about Christ. I'm tired of these stupid little trends that these boys have. Admit it. Dudes sweat Tupac only because you're "supposed" to. You sweat him because the people on tv sweat him. Same reason you dudes sweat big white T-shirts and Scarface. Let's be real. Tell me I'm lying.

If death plays so much of a part in our society to deceide whose great and such why isn't Freaky Tah given the same respect? Is it because Tupac and Biggie died because of a glorified beef and ppl feel obligated to mourn the ppl they helped kill?
