In Common’s lengthy travels, musical and otherwise, we’ve been exposed to as many sides of the artist as there are faces on the cover of “Electric Circus” (ugh, what a terrible record). Today we’re going to revisit the last face we saw on EC. What face would that be? Why, that would be the pussy-whipped face we saw standing in front of the deaf girl’s house holding up signs in the video for “Come Close.” Today’s selection “Go” [watch it now], his follow-up to “The Corner,” is of a similar mold as the joint he split with Mary J.
Hmmmmmmm...
The Kanye West-produced record itself is okay, I guess. I really have little problem with a grown-ass man making a song about grown-ass peoples doing the free lovin' thang. However, I am a little weirded-out by this hi-tech blaxploitation-era video. It’s like “Hey, let’s play into every stereotype and pigeon hole the mainstream already puts this legendary MC into!” With all of Western Kenya’s newfound influence, you’d think he’d stray from doing his man like that.
This shit looks like one of Common’s safe sex commercials. For the duration of the video I’m looking for Com to get to the catch phrase and advise me to Rap It Up.
The video has a ton of cool effects, but the effect his younger viewers are going to find the coolest are that the girls seem to be multiplying uncontrollably… like video-ho cancer. (That's right, just because she got natural hair don't mean she can't be a video ho.)
Common said: “I’m skeetin on a fine-ass woman! No… Wait… I’m skeetin’ on 2 fine ass womenses at the same time! No… Wait… 12!” I guess that’s the life of a rap star.
Damn, watching this video I now realize why he rock them kufis! That’s a big ass melon he got there. Shit look like a lima bean with a goatee.
What I find interesting is the recent emergence of Com as a sex symbol. The man is one of the greatest rappers ever to walk the face of the earth. He’s been putting down classic material since the 80s, but now, at damn near 40 years old, he walks on to 106 and Park to talk to Free and The Predator, and little girls are becoming women in the stands. No one seemed to care when he was Common Sense. His fan base was limited as fuck all the way up to "Like Water For Chocolate". Something happened with that weird ass "Electric Circus" album. I’m not sure what, but I don’t want to get too close.
I don’t care what folk think… That’s what that Erykah Badu will do to your ass. Niggas shoulda learned from Andre 3000. I’m not sayin she fucked his head up… But it damn sure looks that way. After "ATLiens" he went from experimenting with turbans to looking like he experimented with acid and dick. Common came out on some eerily similar shit. What had these two in common? Nothing but the Badu-ism. She's 2 for 2, and I hear she's workin on a Dead Prez member.
I’m sayin, the coochie must have been so good it made him think god was a woman. (I don’t believe Common was with that woman all them years and didn’t hit that, like he claims.)
Overall, “Go” is a quality video representation. A little on the cheesy side, but loaded with fun special effects. If you like kufis, head wraps, earth-toned shit, and light-skinned black people, this is the video for you! If you’re anything like me, you might find this video corny. I don’t have the new album as yet, but “The Corner” was fair indication that Com still has a little something left in the tank besides sugar, so I’m far from counting the man out.

Man I was feelin' da whole concept of the video......but it iz mad crazy dis cat havin all these fantasies about women, and he's in AIDS commercials....oh well...
Ron, how do u not have da new album???
I don't have a problem with this joint. Actually I'm glad it's not your formulaic video. Kanye isn't in it(another plus...overexposure is a motherfucker). Can't blame a cat for trying to expand his fanbase without compromising.
Side note:I think Ms. Badu has taken Prince's old mojo. After they have had their way with whoever they've been with, they aren't the same.
This song makes me feel weird... he is playing the role of Mr. Lova, but is creepy as hell while he is doing it. I like Common, he is one of the better lyricists to do it, but he has an terrible voice that makes it hard to listen to this after a while. Shouldn't he be done with puberty at 39?
Common's 33. Where the fuck did you get damn near 40 from. Dropping hits since the 80's? Yea when he was a teenager.
hello flakon
Sounds like someone just overdosed on HATERADE!!!!! Dude, you seem just a little too preoccupied with Common's personal affairs and less interested in his talents as an MC. I know people had beef with Electric Circus, but mark my words when the youth are the contemporaries and we (the current contemporaries) are the elders, they will be calling it a classic, cause unlike you he was brave enough to think outside of the box. When doing reviews on music, let's stick to the music, what the hell does more women finding him attractive have to do with his music. All I'm saying is you sound like a hater, and not someone who is passionate about music and attempting to give a profound and creative critique of someone's work....Peace
Thanks Peace.
Spark... I know... I'm slippin... I have every Common album except this one... including "Can I Borrow A Dollar" which WAS damn near the 80s...
which brings me to Peace.
Mr. Peace...
I'm not a music critic... I'm a video blogger. I critique imagery, hence all the talk about what's going on in the "video" and why the blog is called "Talkin' VIDEOS."
Call the subject matter hate or whatever you want, I said what I said. Jokes are jokes... yadda yadda.
I'm sure Common's glad you liked his acid trip record.
And I was talking about the strange new trend/phenomenon of little girls finding him sexy... no one cared in 1998... Why now?
Thank all of you for reading and responding nonetheless...
I love you all... no homo, doggy.
you got to be the worse writer/hater/critic there is the song go is strictly about a fantasy and a someone that hates as much as you should relate because im sure thats all you hittin' is fantasies he aint saying go out and hit every freak you see hes talking about a fantasy and the video is one of the best out now all the women are beautiful and its done in good taste boy you got to be the biggest common hater there is he must of hit one of your hoes playa
it's safe to say that all of hip hop's mc's have turned to sex symbols...jay-s...ja rule...the roots...as men accumulate wealth, they become more sound in their potential...that's all...what...shoud he degenerate and get real ugly...is that what you want...
and 'go' is a fantasy record...deal with it..
and while i'm at it...go get some booty...u sound backed up...
I thought the video was real cool, I really dont like the song, but all those special effects and shit is dope.

Peace I love your comments. The video is nice, the album is a classic. You'll might think that I'm crazy but I liked The Electric Circus album. The album definitely grew on me. You'll have to give Common his props for not going the commercial route. He could of been the new 50 or Nelly but he always kept it that authenic true to the form Hip-Hop.
is ron mexico a homo porn star? email me... i love them movies!
"Ahh the sweet smell of victory/go ahead and breath it in like antihistamine" quote from Kanye West, song "They Say" from Common's BE album
Now this is what I'm talking about! It's good to see innovation! This video is truly a breath of fresh air in a world of video's that got their concepts from Mighty Casey's black rapping school!
i love common soo much it makes no sense!
Email me common one day
The song is ok @ best but it's the special effects and girls in the video that really make it pop. Kanye's future as a director is quite bright. "Kanyeeze you did it again, you a genius nigga!"
common is nice...but papoose is nicer...wayyyy nicer
i hate this song go go go go shut the fuck up!!!!!!!!!!! the song to me is feeble-minded and i hate it. common is way more brisk with his words in his other songs
So Blahzay . . . So Regular . . So Plain . . . and OH So Common.
I like , but people are going overboard with the PRAISE !
Whats Next , Homo Hop Going Platinum ! UGHHH
I don't know about Common being a Homo but I do know that he has the dopest album out this year. After so many years he finally gets some recognition. He still has a hard time going platinum because he's not the Wanksta like 50. He don't need the b.s. to sell records and I respect him for that. In Chicago we have a true emcee that represents us through his music. One LOve! Peace To Man, Woman, and Child! Free Assata Shakur!
This video is nice and creepy..the colours are beautiful, the thought of common gettin it on wit some one isnt.
I'm not that impressed with the graphics because when u become an Adobe Photoshop whore like I have you know how to do some of them (like the "rays" commin out of them)
I actually like this song..which is a change cause I'm not particularly fond of his im-a-Hip-Hop-poet-and-ill-make-love-to-you-through-my-rhymes style but I guess we all have to grow up
I love the video and.. common. All of his songs I have listened to I have really liked. I like "Go" but it does not compare to common's song "the Corner" the corner I would rate a A+ I can listen to that song all day. I like how common mixes old skool w/ the new. And Kanye you are the bomb too, your one of the best, keep doing your thang.
do u know what the fuck i just cant comprehend all these fake ass "new ass i just got into common the other day ass motherfukas" dissin the electric circus. if u want to cuss an album cuss the masacre or encore by eminem or even the slim shady show. the electric circus was introducing people to the new age of hip hop. The lyrical content was outstanding...and at first the beats were like .....woow this is different..but if u listen to thast album n respect the rapper u can see that this album is a diamond in the ruff. the production was willing to push the veteran mc into a space..only thoose with an open mind and interlect could enter...if you didnt like it may be his lyrics were too deep 4 u or the beats too diverse for ure simple pop nelly dick sucking mind. However what i enjoyed about BE..it contains a mixture of sounds from every single one of his albums from ressurection....to even electric circus. i defin8ly think thoose who did not like electric circus and are masturbating over the eargasmic sounds of BE are hippacrites because tracks such as GO and real people have elements of electric circus. tracks like they say and love is have elements of light water for chocolate..especially that song thelonious those tracks proper makes me remenis of that. but neways cant wait 4 go remix wiv return of d'angelo and testify video however a wiser move would have been faithful....which makes me remenice of that song he done with lauren hill. Kanye west motherfuka hurry up with that album man i aint been this off my seat ever since method man took years releasing judgement day and ghostface releasing supreme clientele.
Trust me... I get on all of that shit. 50, Em... everything... I don't give a fuck.
I AM a Common fan from the beginning, and I loathe Electric Circus.
Fuck all that open-mind shit... As Common said himself "If I don't like it, I don't like it. That don't mean that I'm hatin."
