The Notorious B.I.G. feat. 112 - "Sky's The Limit"

Posted on June 2, 2005 11:36 AM

This week's installment of "Throwback Thursday" takes us back to 1997, before many of you were born.

If your parents did a good job raising you, then you should be familiar with the tragic loss of the highly talented MC known as The Notorious B.I.G. Today's selection s The Limit,” [watch it now] which features a group of young Atlanta crooners named 112, is from his first posthumous release "Life After Death."

Seriously, though… In B.I.’s honor, Bad Boy enlisted the services of award-winning director Spike Jonze, who is responsible for a slew of amazing motion pictures and music videos. This one provides a perspective of celebrity life that most people are unable to bring themselves to. When people think of their favorite celebrity, they usually think of a larger than life figure that they could never relate to. Spike’s vision creates a funny and charming video that also temporarily removes Bad Boy, the greatest record label in the history of the universe, from it’s 1997 pedastal (which you may or may not remember).

The idea would never have come to complete fruition were it not for exceptional casting. They were able find the PERFECT kid Biggie and Puffy to be the video’s stars. While the Biggie kid was a perfect ringer, Young Puff looked a little like Baby Chris Rock, but he definitely had Poppa Diddy Pop’s mannerisms down cold. From chicken-dancing to stealing as much camera spotlight as possible, Young Puff effectively makes you forget that he is not the one rapping on the track. After hitting us with the perfect co-stars, all that was left to do was make the peripheral characters recognizable, and the effect was complete.

Realizing that it very well may be an effect of time elapsed and entirely unintentional, the video is an awesome parody of what Bad Boy was actually doing back then. From making fans scream outside a fancy restaurant, to chilling poolside (equipped with kiddie hoes!), to getting high and watching the video of a fake Busta Rhymes (my favorite part), Spike and his team of soon-to-be dysfunctional child actors more than get the job done.

The bridge of the video features a juvenile Lil’ Kim, who in preparation for the final scene, tells her friend “You look like a BIRD!” Awesome! Among other well-parodied figures are fellow Bad Boy artists 112 and Faith Evans. One question though, maybe the readers can help me out. Who is the person who gives Biggie and Puffy “the nod” once they are seated in the restaurant? Is that supposed to be a kiddie DJ Quik?

“Sky’s The Limit” is one of my favorite videos. Hopefully you know and love it as well. If you’ve never seen it before (because you were born in 1998, or you’re from Durkadurkastan), I’m honored to share it with you. This is a powerful posthumous cinematic ode to innocence lost. While the video is not necessarily for children, it more than adequately conveys the ever-important message that we should remain child-like.

Whew! With all that said, your childish asses can get at me whenever. Got a question? Comment? Need someone to teach you the Roger Rabbit? Fire at wiil! You already know! ronnie_mexxx@yahoo.com

  • Squidley,

The first line/sentence of today's review reads as follows:

"This week’s installment of 'Throwback Thursday'..."

this should have been enough explanation for you.

Interesting question though. I tend to ask it myself, because somehow he's integrated into the conversation EVERY FUCKIN' DAY regardless of what video we're discussing!

  • It's about time you did a Biggie video. Now you give everyone a good segue into the G.O.A.T. debate... which they were going to do anyway. I get the feeling you could write about Shaq's videos, and it would still turn into Biggie/Pac debate. In fact, you could even put up a blank post and get the same result!

B.I.G. = Greatest JAMAICAN Rapper of All Time! Nuff Respect!

  • Dj Quik is my best guess, Ron. I do think they left a couple things out that would've made it better: little Craig Mack, and little Jay-Z(good luck finding a kid with big enough lips).

I love Big, he's one of my favorites, but he's not the greatest of all time, Pac is, but I DON'T want to argue about it, so its no use for anyone to call me out.

Even legands say B.I.G. was the greatest of all time, cause they was fans they damn self, Pac new it, Nas and Jigga man only two albums and he certified damn, only two, just think how the game would be if B.I. was still lacing us wit his shit. "duke brought the east back/ ya'll better beleive that,

  • I'll put it this way, B.I.G. is the greatest loss of all time. Pac managed to get his message out before he was killed, along with recording hundreds of unreleased tracks, most people remember him for bringing it all to the table including speaking on the issues, and offering solutions. Big put out only three albums, garnered a massive following in a short time, but is remembered by many for his wordplay and gangsterisms much more than he is for being socially conscious. I think Big had much more unreached potential than Pac did, partly because he was taken right as he was becoming a truly great mc. With time, I think he could've been the greatest, but sadly time is something he didn't have.

  • You have all been brainwashed. No one was calling biggie the greatest before he died. His legacy is all do to his man servent P. Diddy screaming at people that he is the greatest, along with Kim and the rest of Bad Boy. Maybe that's why no one else on that label can sell a record because all the promotion is still being given to Biggie and he has been dead how many years now? Time will tell who the greatest of time was, years after we are gone and Diddy isn't hear to remind you that Big was the greatest we will see just who is remembered. Pac fans know this thats why we don't try to force people into thinking he is the greatest. I wonder though if Pac had a one man show like big had with Puffy would anyone still even be thinking about Big.
