The self-proclaimed “undisputed kang of the parkin’ lot” is ready to make the world lean to his lyrics. Swisha House all-star Paul Wall bounces onto the mainstream scene with his single “Sittin’ Sideways” [watch it now] featuring fellow ghetto grindin’ legend Big Pokey. (Yes, that's his rap name!)
Okay, let me cut the shit. I heard he was dancing in the video, so I wanted to check it out and make sure he wasn't doin' the Carlton! (haha... that was another white joke.)
Seriously though, when I first heard Paul Wall a couple years ago, I had no idea he was white. I also wasn’t entirely impressed with his screwed freestyles. I was more of a fan of Chamillionaire… but that’s probably because Chamillionaire is an amazing name.
Luckily for us, and most likely for his own sake as well, Paul Wall doesn’t make his “whiteness” an issue in his music or visual representation. The few times I’ve seen him, aside from the color of his skin, he’s appeared to be no different from the rest of the H-Town boys he’s been surrounded by. He even looks normal when he "dances." Granted, he's careful not to do much, but so are black rappers. Some may call him a “wigger.” I say, coming from the projects, there’s at least one Paul Wall in every hood.
All that should matter is that this man, while not the greatest lyricist, damn sure knows now to make a song feel a certain way. If you’re into leanin’ music and bouncin’ with that true southern shit, Paul Wall should be on your radar already.
Enough of what Paul Wall does right!
What he shouldn’t be doing it standing back to back with Big Pokey! They are on some real “Odd Couple” shit. It makes Paul look like Pokey’s prison bitch. I'm thinkin' Pokey is gonna have Paul scrub his drawers any second.
Big Pokey looks like Goldmouth from “Life.” Throughout the video I find myself unintentionally ignoring his rhymes and hearing him ask Paul Wall: “You gon’ eat yo cawnnnbread?!”
What kinda name is Big Pokey anyway? If I was Gumby’s horsey pal, I’d be offended that this Klump-ass nigga took my name and associated with my identity! I bet Pokey is in some play-dough canister right now like: “Why couldn’t this nigga be Big Prickle?”
Everything pretty much made sense to me, especially within the context of Houston’s rap scene. What did confuse me though… How Paul Wall gonna just grab a girl like a pair of sneakers off the clearance rack? That wasn’t no loving, “I know this lady” or “Hey, let me say something sweet to you” kind of embrace. That was some Scorpion shit. They might as well have thrown in the sound effect too. “GET OVERRRR HEEEERE!!!”
What kinda chickenhead is gonna go for that? Then just let him spit that hot breath in the ear like a Ying Yang Twin? I was kinda shocked. That shit is gross. That ain’t parkin’ lot pimpin’. That’s parkin’ lot molestin’. But I guess it’s good to be the kang.
Is it just me or does Paul Wall look kinda gremlinish? Mildy retarded maybe? I dunno. He looks like Jason Kidd... no wait... He looks like Jason Kidd's son all grown up! (Having kind of grown into his head). He's also known to wear a Kenyon Martin jersey (from the Nets). He eerily looks like him too.
Overall, I give props to another well-shot, Swisha-Housey video about parkin’ lot pimpin’ and getting leaned out full of local-celebrities. Houston is finally carving a niche into the game. It’s good to know that it ain’t just Scarface and UGK anymore (even though I love them). Houston has finally fully emerged as a force in rap! I’m sure Pimp C is very proud from his cell. P.A., NIGGA!
In addition to furthering the Houston movement, this video contains easily the best Big Pokey verse I’ve ever heard (Even though he sounds like he’s choking on his own throat). I guess that’s not saying too much though. Speaking of not saying too much, Paul Wall says nothing here that you wouldn’t have heard if you are familiar with his underground work, or were forced to listen to “Still Tippin’” 150,000 times like the rest of us. So don't expect anything amazing. Just expect to nod off to a chill song with a tight Houston-style beat.
One last thing… Can someone from Houston explain the swerving car shit to me, please? Is that really how niggas be comin' down candy? Or is that just drunk driving on videotape?

H-Town Born and Raised: Screw and all that down here in houston is a way of life. Swangin' and Bangin and all that as a rally cry ain't no more...(NO disrespect to E.S.G.) it's just DONE now we don't yell it, it's just done. the swang is just a part of the whole slowed down movement, comin' from a slower pace, "leanin", just don't care mentality. Wouldn't you say Bun B or Scarface is your Jay-Z? Papoose isn't really an undergroung "king" so to speak. People know and respect him, but I'd say Pokey is an incomparably larger figure than Papoose. Especially considering that Fat Pat is his brother. Though, from as close as they play each other, Kay Slay might be Papoose's daddy.

Just because people _can_ screw up music with a computer, doesnt mean that anyone does it correctly. The original way of doing it (Screw, Watts, OG Ron C) involves playing two copies of the same vinyl recording at the same time, and mixing between them. Now this is just not as simple to reproduce even with the best software on the market. It takes alot of skill to do it correctly and to be called chopped and screwed. On the computer it takes even more skill, and a whole lot of time. Just to screw it (or simply just slowing it) it is easy with a pitch shift but the chops are layered and timed to a beat of their own, you just have to feel it i guess.
