I guess Santana’s back to business. I love when rappers tell us what we should assess for ourselves, don’t you? Today’s selection finds Harlem mainstay Juelz Santana of the Dip Set [Robin?] Byrd Eagle Chickenhawk Gang teaching his contemporaries a thing or two about the “Mic Check” [watch it now] in what looks like Mighty Casey’s “Black Rapping School.”
In a class that appears to be taught by Rakim (oh, dear), Santana takes the floor and shows the other students “what’s really good” in a display that apparently gets the seal of approval from the professor.
Stop… wait… reverse the tape… A few years ago, I wouldn’t have figured Rakim Allah, one of the greatest ever to do this, to even listen to a Juelz Santana, let alone associate with him. I guess people do crazy things when they’re looking for a deal.
Full of clever visual effects to match a truly clever rapper, “Mic Check” is a black-and-white blizzard of camera tricks and merged shots. The camera does not stay still for more than 4 seconds at any point. Between the flurry of shots and Santana’s incessant movements, this one is guaranteed to make you dizzy, heightening the effect of Juelz’ choppy, stop-and-go flow. YES!
Juelz strays from doing too much of what the Diplomats are known for. In his apparent attempt to avoid making yet another crack-kingpin, pimpin’, benz-whippin’ anthem, Santana unfortunately does the next worst thing. If he can’t talk about rocks, hoes, clothes and cars on his ode to lyricism… what CAN he talk about? YESSSS! Himself!
What does Juelz Santana think of himself? Well, aside from thinking he’s the best MC in the game, he considers himself to be the human manifestation of… yes, you guessed it… CRACK. What a coincidence! I thought he looked like there was more than chronic in that blunt he’s hittin’. This is possibly the real reason Rakim is playin' him so close. Maybe they’re getting wet… or worse... He may be trying to catch some crack crumbs as they are dusted off of Juelz shoulder. That's right people, Juelz Santana danruffs flakes of crack cocaine!
Utimately, the rap Tyrone Biggums was able to put together a rather enjoyable video… as far as mainstream videos go. Considering there’s no crack (except himself), cars, guns, and limited hoes, I’ll gladly take this one. Niggas gotta take baby steps, ya know? You can’t expect “The Corner” from Santana just yet. I am pleased and find “Mic Check” to be a step in the right direction as it is an acknowledgement that lyrical skill IS actually important to being a rapper. Now, if only we could find a way to show the masses that the Dip Shits aren’t the only rappers in Harlem, we’ll be on our way!

This video carried 3 basic, played out, unoriginal elements:
1)The BLACK & WHITE VIDEO element;
2)The occasional VIDEO HOE POINTLESSLY DANCING OFF BEAT element;
3)The TEAHCER/CLASSROOM element. QUESTION: Did paying Rakim (with either cash or drugs, or offers of a $5,000 record deal perhaps) to be in the video truly validate and justify Juelz' presumption that he has something to teach MC's? HMM...
As a former Harlem resident (I lasted 10 years without becoming a hood rat), I am ashamed of the Diplomats and their lack of creativity, lyrical skills, and unmerritted arrogance.
