Damian Marley (AKA Jr. Gong) - "Welcome to Jamrock"

Posted on June 13, 2005 11:36 AM

Welcome to Jamaica!

Damien Marley

The dread cap comes off to me breddrin “Jr. Gong!” Not only has Damian Marley finally gotten some mainstream airplay in the U.S., but he’s done so with what is currently my favorite song. His new dub plate and video “Welcome to Jamrock” [watch it now] powerfully portray Jamaica for what the cities actually look like. None of that “One Love,” “Jamaica Me Happy,” “Let me give you blond cornrows” shit over here.

That’s right, if you want to see smiley, shuffling Negro servants playing steel drums and offering to braid your hair (like the Africans at the train station), you’ll need to get off the plane at the other side of the island. When you fly to Kingston, Jamaica’s Manley Airport, you’re just minutes away from the true heart and face of “Jamrock.”

Being one of Bob Marley’s children must be tough. On one hand you’re treated as royalty… well… because you’re Bob Marley’s son. On the other hand you may feel forced to try to live up to your father’s legacy. You at least have appear to be a champion of the people like your father was. It’s probably difficult to do that behind the 5% tints on your chromed-out BMW.

Damian Marley certainly looks as if he is suffering from this internal struggle. While Ziggy has long since detached himself from the plight of Jamrock’s population, and Ky-mani has fully embraced the underworld culture (starring in a collection of rapsploitation classics including “Shottas”), Jr. Gong tethers the fine-line between the two worlds. A politically astute, dare I say “conscious” record, “Welcome to Jamrock” really left Damian with no choice but to take this video to the streets.

The gritty depictions of life in the city are often contrasted by the pomp and circumstance of Jr. Gong himself, who usually appears as a prince among paupers as he caringly strolls through alleyways, sidestreets and even housing complexes (flanked by security, of course). I'm not knocking the man though… I wouldn’t go to those parts of Jamaica alone my damn self.

Overall, “Welcome to Jamrock” is a highly entertaining video that truly heightens the effect of a powerful song. This is the kind of video unnamed neo-soul and “conscious” artists here in the states miserably fail at trying to compose. While Jr. Gong is still Prince Akeem to Jamaica’s Zamunda, his heart for his people shines through in a stellar song and video combination. Click on this one and turn it up loud with me!

P.S.: Bob had some strong ass genes, didn't he? How all his kids look and sound so much like him? Shit is scary.

  • I HAVE MIXED FEELING ABOUT THE WHOLE MARLEY RUNNINS.

WHILE THE VIDEO IS MUSICALLY AND LYRICALLY ENTERTAINING... I HAVE ISSUES WITH THE CELEBRITYISM OF RASTAFARI NOW THAT THE MARLEY YOUTHS ARE ON THE SCENE.

I HAVE NUFF ADMIRATION FOR THE JR. GONG
BUT... I HAVE MAJOR ISSUES ABOUT THE LACK OF TRUE SPIRITUALITY AMIDST THE MOVEMENT OF RASTAFARI.

I'VE BEEN INITIATED INTO THE MOVEMENT BY BIG RASES FROM JAMAICA/PANAMA ETC.
AT THE AGE OF 15 IN BROOKLYN, NY AND I HAVE BEEN OBSERVING THE COMMERCIALIZATION OF THE MOVEMENT FOR 20
    PLUS YEARS NOW.

JAMROCK IS REAL!!! BLACK/POOR PEOPLE IN GHETTOS ARE SUFFERING ALL OVER THE WORLD... INCLUDING RIGHT HERE IN THE UNITED SNAKES OF AMERIKKKA!

WAKE UP PEOPLE AND LEARN TO SEE THE TREES FROM THE FOREST.

  • You know what? I feel Omega.

My personal feelings are fuck the Marleys because from what I overs they don't even like Black women. Damian said in an interview that he had never been with a Rasta woman either. What?
Then again look at who his mother is!

The fruit don't fall far from the tree!

  • I LOVE JR. GONG!

I've met him in person more than a few times and he was very gracious.

This last time I was blessed to get a couple of pictures with him.

I don't know who his woman is or if he likes Black or Rasta women but he seemed
nice enough when I met him.

The celebrity thing is a bit of a dilemma. I hope he doesn't let it go to his head. He seems pretty down to earth but I don't know him personally behind the scenes like that to be able to really say much.

I will keep him in my prayers.

Big up's to jr.Gong and The Marleys. Question who are we to judge any one. Be happy with yourself and then you truly will be happy. One love, to all.

  • big gucci,

you made the dumbest comment i have ever heard. if you knew anything about dreads you would know that rastas consider well kept dreads as "bathroom locks". locks are a natural style, a style that is merely maintained by just washing the hair and letting it go. We as Americans with names like "big gucci" are stuck in the idea of material things and processed hair. anyway, why the hell is your name big gucci? you probably don't have two nickels to rub together, a pot to piss in or a back door to throw it out of. get real nigga!

  • Ofcourse you non-Jamaicans don't have a clue about our history and culture. Most Rastas do not date Rasta women because there aren't that many to begin with. The movement is male dominated and the belief is that men must guide the women into Rastafari. This is how it has been since the start of the movement, hence the very few Rasta women seen in comparison to the men. But things are slowly changing.

  • HI!!
Excuse me for my very bad english but i'm french (32 years old) and i try to progress but it difficult.
I would like to say that i love jr gong very very love him... he's so cut...he seems to be very shy with girl and the suffer of his messages can be read in his beautiful eyes...and in his lake of smile.
I have a girl cousin(like my sister)we were living together in Lyon. She let me alone living 7 years in tobaggo(carribbean)and now she came back with 2 beautiful children that she had with 2 differents husband (married twice). The first things she told to me that "you know, poeple suffer there, the system is strange, they let their poeple die" what she told to me after give me a idea about what happened...only just an idea that make me understand Damian,s message.
Since young have always listen to BOB and i think nobody can tell better like him what is peace and suffer. I love Marley's family and i say " long long long life to marley's family" im very proud of Damian's songs and work even if I AM the tourist who could go to jamaica or jamdown!!
Somtimes i'm not proud to be white because i can't understand why the white had felt more strong than the black and why they do such horrible racism. i'm angry after the whites and after states chief (government).
In my country, some flats are burning (where black poeple live)and they (system) let them burn. they let poeple die. and the flat burn because they re very very old and nobody wants do something because black poeple live there. a black woman lost her 7 brothers and sisters and her son (3 years old) I'm very very shamed because system had money to help them. last week i wrote a letter to our fucking president!!!!!
I would just tell this few words. i love you. all i would like to stop the suffer and help young people not to take wrong way...but i have no money. to help we need money....
    all is about money.

    Long life to themarleyssssssss!!!!!!:
Jr gong: good work!! you're a genius!!

she came from tobaggo whith her last husband who's nikcname's Kinky....and guess what...it's a very wonderful man so nice and so funny.... that's why i progress in english...because of him!
i told me some funny story and some very very sad. mother'abandon, life in the streets, drugs guns..... i can't believe it!!!
But he still very sad in France because he's always thinking of his beautiful country....
To make him happy i take him every where i go makes him meeting some poeple . always proud of him!!!
and the things he's fond of ... telling me stories with a good good spliff.

bye bye love you so much.

  • The marley's are raw just off G.P. Their father held it down not just for the stardom but for himself and his way of life. like he Always said "Rasta is the future". It's in your hearts, it's not a hair style or a religion, it's a way of life, respect it. The Jamrock song is a great song, but you have to listen to "There For You" on the album. that's a banger. I look forward to hearing more from him and the young marley's. To the fool who diss Marley's mother, your an stupid. most of you who have made negative comments are stupid. Judge not, or ye shall be judged.

  • The Road to Zion:

There is a line in the song in which a rapper puts down Robert Mugabee.
That rapper obviously failed to do his homework before he commenced to spit on the mike.
The hiory of what has been done to the people of Zimbabwe for over the past 25 years is crimminal. They were
promised that their land would be returned to them in within ten years since 1980; which it wasn't.
And why is it that when Israel speaks of regaining its lost homeland there is no uproar. Now that Mugabee and his people echo the same cry, then its an international outrage.
What it now. Reggae is not Rap!!!!!
And if you don't know from whence it came, stay off the mike. Tell that rapper to listen to Damian's father, Bob Marley's Zimbabwe.
    All weak heart still Drop!!!!
As Bob Said" Reggae is Not the Twist"
    Natty Dub it inna Zimbabwe
    Free Zimbabwe.

  • Damian Marley is so livin up to the standards that Tuff Gong left for the Marley brothers to fulfil. Wat people need to keep in my mind comin from a jamaicans prespective, Jamaica isn't about white sandy beaches and all that shit they be showin on tv. The country is about the ghetto lifestyle; however some people may be living the good life that population is only a selected few. The majority of jamaican are sufferin. Jr. Gong depicts that in his video to the best of his ability. The man is a realist he doesn't sugar coat shit like all the artists in North America, while they talkin about hustlin and shit the livin in some mansion in Conneticut. When dealin with the Rsatfarian culture its not about looks and shit, its way of life. I personally think that although his hair is all over the place thats wat makes him, him.

  • Damian Marley is beyond sexy. He's totally the sexy one out of the whole Marley clan. Plus, he's talented and doesn't need to sample from his dad's catalogue. But, I'd rather hear him sample from his dad, than some low budget American artist.

And to the person who dissed the Marley's on not liking black women. Well, for the record that is a false statement. Bob dated Damian mother's Cindy who was 1/2 white like Bob himself, and there were countless of black women Bob got with. Bob was a lover of women, and it really doesn't matter who Bob dated on the side, because a he married an African Jamaican and left her his estate. And as far as Damian dating black girls or not, we really can't say what his taste in women is, because he keeps that to himself. Hopefully, he dates black women, because I would date him in a nanosecond. Damian is sexy, his voice alone makes him hot. He totally rocked the Vibe Awards last night.

DAMIAN PLEASE TAKE A PIC OF YOUR GIRL , SO PEOPLE CAN END THIS DISCUSSION.

Btw, there are pics of bob's grandchildren, and it's obvious that many of them are not by white women.

  • Hi,i'am an African American women and I was really responding to the young lady who stated that the Marley's don't like black women. That's is not true.Like the early stated Bob Marley's grandchilden are black and they are by black women.I have seen Julian's children they are very light in complexion but they are black children.Like some the children in my family.Steven Marley's children are especially the most adorable children that i have ever seen. Their kinda like a dark medium brown with the curliest hair.Their mother's are black.
They are suppose to be in Damian Marley's video "It is Written" where he hands the scroll to the two little children on the beach that's his niece and newphew.I have seen Ziggy's,Cedella's,Rohan and Sharon's children too. They are black children they are not mixed either they are black and they are beautiful.Bob Marley has a very attractive black family. It make's me feel good when i see that,A beautiful black family of all different shades of colors.

  • Another thing i forgot to mention in my eariler post is that Bob Marley's mother has a home in Florida and his childen spend alot of time there when they are not at there native home in Jamaica.Damian Marley was talking to this young lady who was a law student at The University of Miami, they were spotted a few times out together. What did her physical appearence look like?
Well it is said that she is very stunning. She has a brown complexion, she is mixed her father is Jamaican and her mother is spanish. She has straight black hair big pretty eyes and dimples. He was spotted talking to her at one of Cedella Marley's fashion shows. My brother lives in Miami and he was saying that Damian use to talk to her a while ago but he doesn't think that they still talk.He stated that he thinks that Damian is really single right now and he is just waiting on that right person who doesn't just look good on the outside but is beautiful spiritually to both inside and out!

  • Yeah i agree with the last post.I'am from Upstate New York and Damian Marley is starting to blow up here in the United States alot of people love him here. They love his brother's and father too.You can go to alot of Urban area's in the U.S. and they are wearing Bob Marley tee-shirts.American's are giving Damian Marley love.I don't think that it is true about him or his brother's not liking black women.I think he loves black women because every time i see him he is with some of the hottest black female celebrities or "stars" in the country and he's alway's smiling and grinning from ear to ear.Taking pictures with them.So do think that he loves but he just has'nt found the right one yet!
