To send you guys into this weekend, I’m gonna give you something you’ve been asking for since we started the column.
We know Puffy’s been scrambling to save Bad Boy for some time, but did it really have to be this way? Bad Boy South’s inaugural coalition Boyz N Da Hood hopes to usher in a new era of Puffy-dom below the Mason-Dixon line with “Dem Boyz.” [watch it now] Did he hold a contest for this group too?
In honor of this monumental occasion, "Dem Boyz" are the first contestants on our new gameshow “U AIN’T GANGSTA!” (following the Extreme Hoin' Challenge at 8)
Apparently Jeezy Da Snowman runs with more than Big Gucci’s little brother. In addition to Young Jeezy, the gangsta-shop quartet includes Jody Breeze, Big Gee and Duke.
Before I had seen the video I’d heard that one of them said in an interview that they were the new NWA. Upon watching the video I immediately wondered what they had been smoking. They must have inhaled some residue from "Dat Work." Where do these clowns get off calling themselves the new NWA? I envision Eazy-E rolling over in his grave and taking his shades off upon hearing such blasphemy.
The video begins with Puffy slowly creeping around what’s supposed to be a gully block, yet it’s littered with small children, posers and skeezers. The only thing that scared me was the crackheads playing chess. We don’t need crackheads using brain power! They’ll get on some SOCOM shit and start jacking TVs and car radios in teams. Couldn't you see Tyrone Biggums as an ill point man for one of them Navy STEAL units?
The contrast shot includes Puffy and his southern extended family in a lot of some kind lined up like a boy band. If B5 are the "Half-Black-street Boys," "Dem Boyz" are without question the "Crackstreet Boys." Puffy is wayyyy too smiley to leave any kind of ghetto credibility to this video. The nigga looks shiny to me! Puffy’s presence nullifies any notion that the block could be 98 Degrees. If he was going to apply the boy band philosophy to a gangsta rap group, he should have commissioned Bobby Brown and Ja Rule as the frontmen. P.S.: You KNOW Puffy wanted to rap on this shit. It’s oozing out of his dolphin-toothed smile. With the way the song turned out lyrically, they might as well have let him.
In case we didn’t go over this in “So Icy,” Young Jeezy is a Ninja Turtle. He looks like Raphael with flea market ice on. What's worse? In the main street shot, he looks like Muhummad Ali… TODAY! I was alarmed by the line in which he said that he needs “about an hour” in the shower. I soon realized that I shouldn’t have been as turtles love them some water.
What is supposed to be going on in the end of the video? They had to use an elaborate Extreme Hoin’ Challenge setup to get at some chumps who harassed big homie at the boxing gym? NOT gangsta! This is more like a gangstafied “You Got Served.” Also, what the hell kinda venue are they in the back of? That ain’t no apartment with them gymnasium blocks on the walls. Looks like they shot the last scene in the green room of one of Puffy’s coliseum shows.
While I can’t find any lyrics of note, the beat is borderline bananas if you wanna get crunk. The chorus is certainly catchy. The verses are once again, little more than drug-dealer braggadocio strung together by the occasional onomatopoeia. Give it a go yourself if you haven't seen it enough on 106 and Park and Crap City.
Puffy, formerly considered a master of marketing, had little to work with here. Usually Puff has no problem forsaking lyrics in favor of commercial appeal. Sadly, he doesn’t have a single pretty boy in this group. He must have thought that these fellas were thuggish enough to carry the record. I must say, I’m not impressed, Poppa Diddy Pop. He hasn’t looked hard enough in the south. There are Pretty Rickys, real gangsters, and GASP… rappers with talent down there. Get your metal detector and scour the beach a little harder, big homie!

He has true skill, a message, raw lyrics, and he's actually from the streets. Immortal Technique is underground and he sold 40,000 RECORDS WITH NO AIRPLAY. Canibus and Jedi Mind Tricks are examples of underground rappers who are raw/intelligent and sell a lot more than 2000 records regardless of airplay and the media.

I'm gonna try to not be negative because so many of you have already said so much negative shit. I think the beat of the "Dem Boyz" song is hot but I wonder what criteria if we are being to hard on Diddy and "dem boys". I mean it is we, the consumers, who are buying these songs and requesting them on the radio, etc. When we ask for more than generic thugs maybe we will get it. If we don't settle for average music and expect more then they, the artists, will have to step their game up. For example with Jay-Z, after BIG and PAC passed, we pressured someone, the next best to step up and he did so. So now that he is semi-retired shouldn't be demand someone to step up to the plate. Maybe we will be surprised and it will be one of "dem boys" ( I doubt it) but who knows.
