2Pac - "Ghetto Gospel"

Posted on June 3, 2005 12:00 PM

Strange fact of the day: Yesterday’s video from Biggie was a throwback. Today’s 2Pac video is a recent release.

2Pac-table

2Pac’s newest video “Ghetto Gospel” [watch it now] comes from his posthumous collection of albums greater in number than those released while he was alive. While his career and memory have never gone anywhere, this is yet another song from his extensive archive that has been effectively resurrected.

From Pac’s most recent LP “Loyal To The Game” (executive produced by Eminem) “Ghetto Gospel” is a gritty, soulful song whose video chronicles a day in the life of a young hustler seeking change.

The verses sound like they come from a pretty old 2Pac song template, but are exhumed and reconstructed well by Eminem’s production and the addition of a sing-along chorus that drives the conceit of the video home.

Grimily shot, the imagery proves powerful enough to effectively represent the experience of the petty street hustler beyond the corner. Without giving away too much of the plot, there is great obscurity surrounding the death scenes, much like that surrounding 2Pac’s own death. Predictions of death and heavy religious imagery provide an additional collection of parallels to 'Pac’s death.

'Pac fan or not, this video is worth seeing. Regardless of religious background and orientation, Marshall Mathers and Afeni Shakur’s collaboration should be seen as a powerful composition that inspires one to reflect on life and what’s truly important if nothing else.

On a lighter note, I have a pretty nice stack of requests ready for next week. Wanna drop the straw that breaks the Central American donkey’s back? You know where to go... ronnie_mexxx@yahoo.com. If you’re a pretty lady who’s taller than I am, and you want these coffee beans, maybe you can grind with meeeeeee!

  • the last piece of music I listened to PAC was 2Pac&TheOutlawz. Because It was not tainted with other made up shits colabs. Em did a terrible job, Afeni Shakur should be whipped by a chain for allowing Em to produce it. If the man did not intend for some of his music to be released, then they should respect it. This is not any of Pac's masters, it's technology and voice reconition altering machines that's making Tupac's albums.

    HAAAAAAAATTTTTTTTTTTTTEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!

I think Em did pretty damn good for attempting to master some 2Pac Lyrics into Production? Y'all can't be so fuckin' hard on him. I like to see y'all do any better. So many Em haters.

  • I actually like this video alot, the album too, I just wish they would have lowered the pitch so his voice would sound better.

More importantly however is that I was just watching "The Negro Channel" when Juelz Santana's new video came on. I almost shitted on myself when I saw who made a couple appearances in the video: Rakim. Now am I missing something here? Because I knew he left Aftermath, but I hadn't heard anything about him getting signed somewhere else, especially Dipset. Throw me a frickin bone here!

  • NIGG:

You should not say anything about this, especially when you are obviously not a 2pac fan, or for that matter, respectful toward other types of musicians. You, by yourself, just knocked our culture back 10 years, you need to learn to have respect for your elders. I bet you'd try to tell me that Nelly is better than KRS-One, wouldn't you? You fuckin punk, you just shitted on everything Pac worked for by trying to turn it racial. Admittedly, G-Unit shouldn't be on there, but I think Pac would've liked Ghetto Gospel, and the joint with Dido. If it was really so bad, then why didn't the Outlawz object? They were Pac's closest homies, who besides Afeni would know him better than them? I gotta say, as a 2pac follower, I liked this album more than I liked the Better Dayz album, which had T.I. on it, but you're not bitching about that, I'm assuming because he's black. Its dumbass brothas like yourself that are helping to keep racism alive. And you know N.I.G.G.A. with Jadakiss is some good shit too, so you need to shut the hell up.

  • when you have the same producer for a WHOLE CD.... you notice that the beats sound the same... no matter how good lyrics are, you can't stand to here Eminems beat on a tupac song.... i had to do that on the Ressurection CD, i don't wanna have to do it for this...

all of the beats also sounded sampled too... i still think "Hennesy" sounds like "Got Some Teeth". "Thugs get Lonely Too", that beat has been used so many times... sounds like "In Da Club" for example... "Thug For Life" sounded like "Ass Like That"

only good songs were the last four, original beats, and they put pac back in his original gangster element, not this 50 cent elton jon, Dido bullshit.... i refuse to think he would want any of these faggots on his album.... and especially Em doing all his beats.....

    pure. garbage.

any pac fan should be highly dissapointed by this album...

  • Are you guys reading the comments before your respond. Everybody is saying the same thing. the album sucked. im not a 2pac fan but, i liked most of his music before he died, anything after his death, should be put in the garbage. all of the albums after his death were songs that didn't make his kut, suge knight and pac's mother are just tryna make some money, since pac died broke. thats why im glad Pdiddy only made one album for biggie after his death, which is also garbage. please let the man rest in peace, and enjoy his predeath albums.

  • If all of the posthumous releases of his music would have been thrown in the garbage, then we wouldn't have Hail Mary, Runnin(Dyin to Live), Still I Rise, Better Dayz, Thugz Mansion, Hell 4 A Hustla, Secretz Of War, Ghost, To Live And Die In L.A., Changes, Me And My Girlfriend - which would, in turn, prevent '03 Bonnie and Clyde from ever happening, Hit Em Up being released on cd, and many other things. You deserve a slap in the face for sayin such a thing, you just pissed on Pac's grave.

I doubt that any of you who are shitting on his album are true fans of his, otherwise you'd understand that this album was SUPPOSED to be different, the songs are from a younger, not-yet-corrupted-by-fame 2pac. You should probably go buy his book of poetry(The Rose That Grew From Concrete) and read it as many times as it takes for you to understand it, but wait, you're probably gonna try to tell me that was trash too.

  • this album was prbably the worst pac record. it had east coast idiots on it, pac would not hav let 50 cent or g-unit on a record. the only people that should of been on this record r outlawz and big syke or any of pac's mates. suge knight should hav produced this, i lik eminem, but he produced this and it's crap-the beats r too modern and bouncy and he horribly munipulated 2pac's voice, and he made 2pac say, "g-unit is in the mo fo house?" wat tha heck is with that, 2pac would hav been an enemy of eminem if he was alive, westcoast4life. lets hope they hav a real producer for the next cd. HOW DARE EMINEM MINIPULATE A RAP LEGENDS VOICE, EMINEM SAID HE WAS HONOURED WHEN HE WAS ASKED TO DO THIS ALBUM... WELL HE SHOULD OF RESPECTED THE MUSIC OF TUPAC SHAKUR NOT MAKE IT'S BEATS 2004, 2PAC'S MUSIC HAD SOUL, EMINEM'S LATE MUSIC IS HAVING SONGS LIKE "BIG WEENIE & ASS LIKE THAT"? THAT AINT RAP, 2PAC WAS THE DEFINITION FOR RAP, EMINEM SHOULD B VERY DISAPPOINTED IN HIMSELF, 4 NOT RESPECTING 2PAC'S HEART AND SOUL IN MUSIC. • Whoever said that Suge Knight should have produced this album, thankfully, did not influence Afeni's decision. Suge Knight is responsible for 2pac's murder, and yes he IS dead. I'm not one of these conspiracy theory guys, but this is what I believe, and it fits together like a puzzle. The people who are sayin the production for this album was awful, well, tough luck, that was Afeni's decision not yours, and I think she chose well. I guess you won't have to be bitching about how she should switch producers much longer, because the next Pac album is the last one.

    WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT!!!!!!

And second, it was a motherfucking black panther, remember: " I can't lie ain't no love for the other side!!" who the fuck told that? ain't it Pac? And now, 'cuz ya'll forget what means respect, u're making rap with a white boy!????

Respect is what u can learn from him. Ya'll need to listen his lyrics attentivly. By the way, how the fuck Em changed his lyrics to represent Obie trice, G Unit or his fucking white self.

If ya're true to hip hop music, even if u like that white boy u can't be agree with that all process, at the time he left, he was not hanging with white peoples, that's how the fuck he left so who are u to make him change?

  • "Ain't no love for the other side."

...couldn't possibly have been talking about COASTS, huh?

You guys' bigotry is truly appaling.

I guess I should change my column from "Talkin' Videos" to "Talkin' Racism."

I can't think of any examples where Pac ever explicitly denounced ALL white people. When we talk about "the [white] man" in that sense it speaks of a select group of people that contribute to and propagate oppression.

Funny thing is... in that sense... there's "whitey" of all races and backgrounds.

But yes, just as much as you guys say Eminem can't speak for a dead man, you people can't either. You have no idea what Pac would want (or if he's alive DOES want).

So why don't we keep this conversation about the MUSIC VIDEO and keep all the speculation and racial bias to ourselves, huh?

But I'm not a Pac fan, I even gave away All Eyes on Me. Runnin is an old track from the early 90's and had this dude Trapp on it. But Em slapped a new (Wack) beat on it and the youngin's ate it up. One more album and thats it no more new (old) Pac albums (maybe). Rip Pac 4 ever, Em repsonsible for the best rappers out today (G-Unit, D12, Obie fuckin Trice!!) bruh you are deluded. If people think the beats are to new age and it shouldn't be produced by a 'white' boy tough theres nothing you can doe about it. you shouldn't really listen to the songs for their beat but for the lyrics so it wouldnt really matter. if tupac was alive today then he might have changed but might not. non of you can decide what he would have wanted cos non of you even know him.

  • At first I was like everyone else, hating the way Tupac's music has been changed and tainted over time with collab's that he would never have done in real life, but today when Ghetto Gospel hit UK charts number one position it made me stop and think - if these collaborations and mix's and postumious releases bring Pac's music to a new generation, then they are doing a good thing. If they get a whole new generation listening to his music and wanting more of his music, then they will start wanting to listen to his older original stuff, and this can only be a good thing.

My 10 yearold twin daughters now listen to Tupac and love his music, and the songs that first got them hooked were My Block and Changes - but now they listen to the entire collection right back to 2PacalypseNow.... maybe without the postumious releases and collabs they would never have gotten into the music....

    Just my thoughts.

  • Tupac would be ashamed at the racism so many of his co called "fans" have shown Eminem on this board. I really don't think anyone can bring themselves to admit that Marshall did a great job with this album. This is the first album since pac's death that I can really feel and get into. Eminem has helped the legend live on a bit longer. Granted - I certainly wouldn't have let 50 or G Unit anywhere near this record, but Em genuinly deserves to be kicking it among the greats now. He is as Loyal To The Game as Tupac was. He respects the history of rap just as much as Tupac did, he is as humble as Tupac was. In fact there are a lot of similiarities between them - both get hated on for the colour of their skin - both overcame tough childhoods to make it as stars. Lay off Eminem - He can outrap anyone in the game today, and now he has proved he can produce too. You can only respect that.

  • Don't hate Em cos hes white, thats racism

Hate Em cos he is a whacked out producer with no consistency and an awful singing voice which destroyed good songs

ok on his new album, all 4 songs not produced by eminem are excellent, the other version of hennessey is so much better than the em produced version with obie (crap) trice...

out of all his (em produced) songs i only truly like Thugz Get Lonely Too (with the almighty nate dogg)... Ghetto Gospel i really like, but its not a 2pac classic, and songs like A Soldier Like Me show 2pac rapping to a decent beat in all his glory, but ruined by eminem singing in the chorus (when is someone gonna tell him that HE CANNOT SING!!!)

so the album has its ups and downs, but too many downs and not enough ups to be a great album, the rise of pacs flow and fall of eminems voice, to the rise of nate doggs thugs get lonely too to the fall of every other song on the album... to the even bigger fall by the awful em produced hennessey, to the brilliant hennessey (produced by red spydar, feat e.d.i. and sleepy brown) its a good album..... but not on the same consistancy of an album produced by suge knight (all eyez on me, makaveli, until the end of time, better days)

Apart from that, everything was so "NOT PAC".
I think Pac's rap's deep and with the right kind of music, you can relate to it, just like ghetto gospel.
It was strange this album cause it looked like they used the same beat for all the other tracks.
Get all the top producers together, make 12 tracks and call the album the "The Final chapter" and end tupac in a big No.1 hit album and we can all call it a day.

    PAC - miss your presence.....

  • Ok all you so called 2Pac experts, i will start by honestly saying i am not a 2pac expert, But check this out, i wudnt mind betting half of you fuckers dissin this album were about 8 yrs old when Pac died, so how the fuck can you possably comment on who he was or how hed react. Lets just say love it or hate it this albums out there, and i think although weak in areas over all good.

Like many of you have said the closest people in his life, the people who know him best, asked Eminem to produce this album, so they must have been happy with his qualifications and his abilities.

Now yes em cant sing and some of his beats recently arnt great, but to call him crap is pushing it a bit too far. As far as his rapping goes hes a fucking genius himself (marshal mathers lp, need i say no more), his producing has brought us some good and some average acts (obie trice is great and compleatly underated, 50cent getting better with time).

As for whether 2pac would like eminem, only 2pac wud know 4 sure, so we shouldnt assume, however, i think 2pac's bonds with Dr dre, and snoop dogg (although they had a falling out b4 2pacs death) would see them getting on and possably rapping together, but like i sed who knows 4 sure.

So i think as a final thought, lets consentrate on the album's ups and downs. Not all the other bullshite

Amaru picked Em to produce this album, cuz he sent a letter and offered to do it for free, and Amaru don't want spend shit on further tupac releases: next year they release pac's last album, although there's still more then 150 tracks left..
To say that eminem is a fucking genius, you just follow the stupid hype around him.. Btw, this was the first pac-album i didn't buy, just to boycot this disgrace

  • Immortal Soujah, you can suck my dick if you dont like my shit, cos i was high wen i wrote this, so suck my dick.... You are completely missing the point, i already said i wasnt a Pac expert myself (so read what i said properly), my point was that neither are any of you, just cos u have all of his albums you think you know who he was. Fuck!, i have all of eminems but i wudnt even think to assume who he likes or not, who he'd work with etc.. and i certainly dont follow hype.... i buy albmums, if i like what i hear and see, not cos every one else says so.

My final point in the first message was, Judge the album for the album, dont fucking bang on about all the other shite "You really think Pac would let allow Eminem sing on a sort of black-revolution song and let him slow down or speed up his voice, like he's on helium". Give it a rest, for a start if pac where alive this album wudnt even happen, not because he wouldnt "let" Eminem do it or because he'd "hate" eminem. but because hed still be doing his own thing, and so would eminem. so drop the shit.

You guys who dont like the album, dont buy it, throw it in the bin, whateva, but please dont fucking bang on about Pac's wishes cos quite franlky you wont ever know.

  • I like the "Ghetto Gospel" video, it's interesting and flows well with the song. If Afeni wishes to add to the positive memory of her son through posthumous musical efforts, then that is her decision and she has the right to do so. Those whom Tupac kept closest to his heart would know better than any of us the direction he was headed and what that future would look like.

Some of you don't care for this latest work by Em, and that's cool. But then there are those of you who, by talking along the lines of 'Pac would never have done this or that with a white man or east coast rapper,' are taking your opinions too far and would rather perpetuate hate and rivalry by imposing your own bitter beliefs on Tupac's image as it stands with his positive foundation established in Atlanta.
Be about the love of the God Tupac believed in, not the division of peace that tears this world down.

  • Em is Em, Pac is Pac
dont mix them cause then its no more pac.

I dont hate Em but his style of music and lyrics
    is totally different from Tupac
they should sell acapella albums of pac
so that true fans can make their own beats on it
    then nobody would complain.

Whats really irritating to me is that they try to do as hes still alive by coming up with albumnames like ressurection and voice altering to make him say TRICE etc etc.
What the fuck if hes dead they shouln't do that.
If you think thats ok youre just a fan thats brainwashed by the marketing hype...

But pac would't mind if his mama is making money out of this
come man its his fuckin mama
dont you people wish that your mama have enough $$CASH$$ if you die before her????
DON'T BUY DOWNLOAD THIS UNLESS YOU WANT TO SUPPORT AFENI (and Em :S :S)

I hope we hear some good ol gangsta beats in the future before we go to the fokin robot era
    Rest in peace Pac

  • who would ever put punk ass mothafucka like eminem, obie trice, 50 cent and g-unit on the album. maaaaaan, if 2pac was alive there will be no 50 cent, g-unit. or even emeinem himslef, few songs in the loyal to the game album was good, but some of them were shit produced and puttin bitches like Dido or elton john, the original Ghetto Gospel sounds much better than the one in loyal to the game, and by way the next 2pac album will not be his last album because, there will be another 10 years of 2pac, so who ever said that can suck my dick, and to proof that, rapper Daz Dillinger said that he has 750 unreleased songs that he recorded it with 2pac before his death, so everyone can suck my motherfuckin dick

  • Yeah very funny m.jackson, he was proven innocent...RIGHT. Anywayz I loved tupac, he was very poetic and intelligent. I did not agree with Eminem making the beats, because his music is weak. But Tupac will always remain in our hearts forever and no one can change that. As for the video it was a C+ but the song is a B+.
