Will Smith - "Switch"

Disclaimer: Will Smith is a CORNY ASS NIGGA!

Now that we've gotten that out of the way, on with the review of the Fresh Prince of Hollywood’s latest effort "Switch" [watch it now]

For some strange reason, Will Smith thinks it's a good idea to start this video out with a relatively grimy feel...And if you mute the video, the opening “basement and a mic” scene is eerily reminiscent of a classic video from another legendary Mr. Smith. Master Will channels the spirit (or at least the layout designer) of LL Cool J’s “Mama Said Knock You Out” video.

Sporting an extra-gully double wifebeater and a low-tilted fitted cap, you might not even know who he is were it not for the opening credits... okay, and the shiny-ass Greenwich Village belt buckle.

Mission failed!

You immediately recognize this is not a 50 Cent video, but something even more painfully non-gangsta. Unfortunately, Will Smith comes to no such realization. In a matter of 5 seconds or so (with Will still trapped in-character), the video goes from “a potentially successful gangsta-front” to “Big Willie’s Coon Dance Party.” For the rest of the video, the nigga looks like Spurs forward Robert Horry dancing his ass off at the Kids’ Choice awards. With all due respect to a rap icon and legend… The shit looks and sounds like a Burger King commercial.

Really, all this video is missing is Carlton doing the wop...or maybe the “Apache” dance.

The video’s saving grace is, of course, two little kids who can pop-lock and do the chickenhead. Also of note, there’s a white guy who pushes a “sista” out of his way so that he can... well... dance like a white boy. Man, we sure love to see that shit in rap videos!

Speaking of sistas, there is definitely no shortage of beautiful women shakin’ it up with Big Willie… While Jada is somewhere behind the camera making sure none of them make contact of any kind with her ticket out of the projects.

Somehow, despite all of this, I’m still a Will Smith fan.

Oh, yeah. Normally, I’d quote a line… But I just want to slap the ghostwriter. I hope it wasn’t Common again (see: “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It”).

You can watch “Switch” for yourself here. By the way kiddies, Will wanted me to tell you: Go BUY the record! Don’t download it!

Yeah, I noticed that the dancers come close to touching Will, but none of them actually make contact with him. Even in movies I don't think Will has ever had a sex scene except with Jada in "ALI."

Ain't that crazy? Jada got her man on lock!

  • First and foremost it is imperative that you all know the word "Switch" is a subliminal message to what you should be doing to the channel on the tv when this video comes on. The first time I viewed this wretched video my 6 year old walked into the room and said "ooo! that's my song. turn it up!" that was my cue to give up on the slightest of hope that Will Smith would make a gangsta come back. And who would want him too? (well, besides Jada Whip'it Smith.) we don't need a grown ass rapper who has the likes of performing with Teletubbies. Jermaine Dupri will suffice for now.
