The Game - "Dreams"

Following up his latest video “Hate It Or Love It,” which featured his boss/arch rival 50 Cent, Game provides another offering full of powerful imagery. His newest video "Dreams" [watch it now] proves to be his most cinematographically sound to date.

Stop lookin’ at me like that! Yes, I’m giving the man some props.

While the over-dramatization of actual “gangsta” events seems to be all the rage in hip-hop music and videos, Game’s re-enactment of his own near-fatal shooting appears to serve a purpose. The bumrush of his Compton apartment sets the stage for a series of images, events, and clever cinematography that accentuate his personal, heartfelt and poignant lyrics.

...Even if the nigga does look like black Popeye.

Thankfully, producer Kanye West isn't dancing his happy ass all up and down this video. Game had to share enough of the spotlight with cameo appearances from Dr. Dre, some quality Jam Master Jay and Eazy-E look-a-likes, old dudes lip-synching the hook and *GASP*... MYA!

That’s right… Despite all of the realism, and "Crossroads" - like requiem for the fallen, Game somehow manages to convince Mya to help him live out one of the songs many "dreams." As the line plays “I had dreams of fuckin’ a R&B bitch like Mya/ When I saw that ass on the front of that King [magazine],” he is joined in bed by what I first thought was another look-a-like. After walking to the window, the woman turns around, sure enough… THAT’S MYA, SON!

I ain’t heard a record from her in a while. I guess she didn’t have anything better to do than to play to the misogynistic objectification of a rapper with a molester’s squint. I can’t hate too much though. Last time it was Silkk The Shocker, so I guess she’s movin’ up.

Aside from that blip on the radar, this is a very well done video. While I’m not so sure that The Game, Martin Luther King, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, and Aaliyah all shared the same dream, this song/video combination is still one of the better compositions to hit heavy rotation on MTV and The Negro Channel (BET) in a while. You can check it out for yourself here.

Be sure to check me out tomorrow, and every Thursday this summer for “Throwback Thursdays.” That’s right, we’ll be talking classic… okay… well… at least older videos weekly.

I'm Ron Mexico,
You stay classy, San Diego!

  • I don't care what dream that kid had, he still looks like he's in perpetual need of a bath and some rhinoplasty. He donked Mya...great...that's really some high aspirations to wanna bang a R&B chick, I wanna follow this guy's lead. As far as I'm concerned every woman I've ever made moan sounded like an R&B chick at climax-- But if he thinks we should envy him for doing that--no thanks--I'm content with who I am and what I look like--I wouldn't wanna be him even if he did hit Mya, and I wouldn't touch Mya with someone else's dick after her getting with Game. Anyway, all this hype for this kid like he's really changing the game when he's talking about the same shit as everyone with his sub-par lyrics.

  • This video does a good job of bringing the lyrics to life, it isnt just another cliched rap video. it raises the bar for the likes of Benny Boom who's video's are as original as 50's raps

  • Stan: Thank you, you got a very good point.

Knowledge: You kinda lost any credibility you had when you tried to talk about beating a 5-year-old and stepping on her throat. Game, at least, has never even suggested such a travesty.
And you must be one of those people always tryin to talk about how "beauty is only skin deep", you content with who you are and what you look like, and you don't want to "hit" Mya?
Fuck is you, gay? Dogg, you got some issues, word up.

  • ummm...half your post is based on an assumption--in other words: "weak"
--you only wanna hit Mya cause she makes you wanna hit it--again "weak"
    Have some self control man--
I wouldn't mind bangin Mya from the back, but for that to be one of my dreams would imply I'm headin in the wrong direction--get a compass man.

  • How does she make me "want to hit it"?
Did I say that to fuck Mya is one of my dreams?
And how would wanting to one day "fuck a r&b bitch" be heading in the wrong direction?

But that's not important. Y'all do realize that when he said he had "dreams of fuckin a R&B bitch" he was referencing an old B.I.G. track "Dreams(Just Playing)" don't you?
