Aftermath Mondays: Dwight Howard Supermans That H* & Shuts Down Dunk Contest - Best Contest Ever?, Pavlik Over Taylor

Posted on February 17, 2008 11:41 PM

LeBron James just captured the All-Star MVP for leading the East to victory with his 27 points, eight rebounds and nine assists. Great.

But we all know when it comes down to 2008 All-Star Weekend in New Orleans (Word to Louweezyana), one name will keep coming up: Dwight Howard.

Ayooooo! Dwight Howard shut that sh*t down! Nah, he shut it DOWN!

Listen, there's a reason why big men don't win the Dunk Contest. For starters ... every dunk they do looks easy. 2) There's no style or grace to their dunks 3) They never dunk to their strengths.

Well, Dwight dunked to his strengths Saturday night.

Dude's first dunk was bananas! Standing behind the hoop, lobbing the ball high up against the backboard, windmilling it, while spread-eagle Superhead-style and flushing it down with his left hand, while his head is still behind the backboard. Whaaaat!? ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? Aaaand ... he made it look easy.

Last year's Dunk champion Gerald Green came back with this creative ass dunk, blowing out the candle on a cupcake, strategically placed on the back of the rim.

Ayoooo, I can't believe dude didn't get a perfect 50 for it. I don't think peeps realize how hard it is to get up thaat high to blow out the candle and then finish that dunk. Ditto for the dunk he did with no kicks on.

LOL @ Charles Barkley telling Magic Johnson to "smack Karl Malone upside the head" and later saying he would "have his back" for giving Green a poor score on the birthday cake dunk.

Even if Green would have grabbed the cupcake, ate it and then windmilled, f**king Mailman would have played him with an 8. Come on, Karl.

Moving on ... Dwight's first dunk entailed the highest degree of difficulty, but to me the Superman dunk was much more entertaining. There's something funny about a near seven-foot dude, who planned to have a Superman outfit underneath his jersey and whose teammate had the cape ready to tie on.

Then dude really tried to get parallel to the floor. Yo, when I first peeped the dunk in live motion, I was like aight, but when I saw the replay I lost my motherf**kin mind! Dude threw that sh*t in. He didn't even grab rim. For a dude that size, my man could jump!

"Superman is in the building." I love Kenny(Smith) on the call.

And you know what I really dig about Dwight Howard winning the Dunk Contest!? The fact that he's actually an All-Star (even though Amare dunked on his head). I think that was definitely the most creative contest of all time, but best? Ehhh...I dunno.

SOHH I'LL THROW IT TO Y'ALL ... WAS THIS THE BEST DUNK CONTEST EVER!? BETTER THAN VINSANITY IN 2000? BETTER THAN MJ & 'NIQUE IN '88? HOLLA AT YOUR BOY!

I know y'all are high on Dwight, but please don't forget ... VC did all this:

Props to Jason Kapono on winning back-to-back 3-Point Shootouts.

Moving on ... Pavlik beat Taylor ... again, just as many of you predicted, but the fight was no slugfest at all. Pavlik won on decision and just as my cousin said, "Nobody got hurt." Pavlik-Taylor I ... JT was hurt!

SOHH letdown or nah? Y'all enjoyed the fight?

Your Boy,

  • dwight is a beast but he did not dunk it on the superman tip gerald green should have got a 50 for blowing out the candle and a 50 for being barefooted...dwight is incredible though you couldnt be mad either way..vince carter was the best dunker ever!

  • 88 was the best dunk contest! Nique got robbed out of that one. 88 they were duelling. That was raw energy and passion like they were playing for the championship. The superman dunk was creative but like many people said, he didnt dunk it. When Dwight Howard dunked on Yao Ming that was some isht right there! Yes, Green shouldve got a 50 for the birthday cake dunk b/c of the difficulty of the dunk. Overall this year's dunk contest was one the most entertaining dunk contest in the past few years.

  • I can't believe all the hype Dwight Howard aka 6-11" Superman is getting. First of all, anyone over the height of 6-6" or 6-7" doesn't intrigue me because big men are supposed to dunk. It's much more amazing to see a Michael Jordan or Spudd Webb do their thing than someone who's head is already at the rim before "flying." Second, the "superman" dunk wasn't even a dunk, anyone who watched the video knows that Howard THREW THE BALL INTO THE RIM, his hands didn't even touch the rim. Lastly, best dunk contest ever?? Superman dunk wasn't even a dunk, and the blowing out of the candle dunk was nothing more than a prop for just a lame dunk. Michael vs Dominique in Chicago = Greatest Dunk contest ever.

  • For a man that big to jump that high and show that much hang time was startling. I loved Kenny's call. But, the funniest shit was Dr. J pontificating and someone on the broadcast team snoring. Dwight was hot on Saturday and all of you haters need to fall back.

  • didnt care about the fight, the lack of charisma and talent by some of the dudes have me officially thinking the "sweet science" died when Mike Tyson went Animal (more figurative than literal, lmaoo)

I think it was the best Slam-Dunk contest, and i'm proud how the NBA rebounded from last years horrific attempt in Vegas....i think New Orleans was very gracious and kept to the cliche` of "Southern Hospitality" from watching some of the festivities on TV, i kinda shed a tear seeing how spirited they are down there with still only the bare minimum of reconstruction efforts actually done.....

enough of the politics, Dwight Howard is the truth, and i'm a Gerald Green supporter, but i think it's still kinda unfair how his efforts got waved off by the panel due to obvious favoritism.. props to Dr. J for at least being unbiased and recognizing the degree of difficulty G.Green's repertoire consisted of.....

  • Lets get a couple things straight ...

    1. Gerald Green made a couple of dunks that on the surface looked spectacular but in actuallity were extremely average. The birthday cake dunk was CREATIVE but the difficulty was zero. Real talk though it was a regular 2 handed dunk. The no socks dunk for an athlete 6'4 or taller on a 10 ft hoop is routine as well.

    2. The All Star Game MVP was given to Lebron James but in all honesty it should have gone to Ray Allen. Jesus Shuttlesworth finished with a game high 28 points, 14 coming in the 4th quarter.

    3. Anyone who watched the contest also realized that the Superman "dunk" was a Superman "lay up" ... I am not saying Dwight Kent did not deserve to win but a spade is still a spade.

Shout out to Amare for postering D. Howard ... and Chris Paul and Brandon Roy will run the league for the next 5 years ...

  • Yo, to all the dwight howard aka most dominant big man in the NBA right now, please stop! All his dunks were certified official and the superman joint was actually harder than a dunk! If u throw a ball in with that much force, u have a better chance of u hitting the ball off the back of the rim than getting it to go in!

I tell u what, for all you haters, go do this! Go to ya basketball court and drop the shit to 7, 8, or 9 feet. Whatever size u can dunk and do trick shit on and try what dwight howard did then say that shit wasn't gangsta! And tell me u got that shit tomahawked easy!
