Hornets Are Best in West: Can Chris Paul Beat Kobe and LeBron for MVP? Red Cafe Salutes G-Men!

Posted on January 28, 2008 11:31 PM

Ayo, if you would have told me that the New Orleans Hornets would own the best record in the West in late January, I would have told you, 'Your buggin'' and probably, 'Chris Paul's nice, but he ain't that nice.'

Maan, was the kid wrong. Dead wrong. N.O. STAND UP! YOUR SQUAD IS THE SH*T!

Chris Paul and the Hornets (Western Conference-best 34-12) are giving teams out West the business! The Hornets did play a bunch of sh*tty squads in November, but still, your boy CP and company (Tyson Chandler, (Peja) Stojakovic and David West) are putting it down in N.O.

cp2.jpg

Their 117-93 victory over the Nuggets last night was their ninth straight win and 12th in their last 13 games! Daamn!

CP's stat line was ri-dic-u-lous! 23 points, 17 assists, nine rebounds. Just plain stupid.

Just to give y'all an idea of how serious those stats are ... Denver's whole squad had 18 assists - only one more than Chris himself - last night. UGGGH!

Yo ... when this dude gets 10 or more dimes, it's lights out.

-He had 11 assists on Saturday in San Antonio - Hornets won, 102-78.

-10 dimes last Wednesday against Portland - And the winner is ... the Hornets, 96-81.

CP's averaging 20.5 points and 10.5 dimes per game. His D is tough too. Dude leads the league in highway robbery with 2.58 full-time jack moves per contest.

Like I said last week ... Chris Paul's an MVP candidate. SOHH I ask y'all:

Can the Hornets keep the top spot in the West?

If so, will CP win MVP over Kobe and LeBron?

(And dare I say), can the Hornets come out the West!?

It took me a minute to post about the Hornets. My humble apologies. Better late than never, though, right DOWNSOUTH?

We Major Wednesdays tomorrow.

Giants' fans - the homie Red Cafe already got you.

  • Chris nice forreal dude. He's what Jason Kidd use to be like back in the day but BETTER. He's the 1 that makes that run. Kobe got D Fish, Timmy D & Tony P. But basically Chris Paul is alone and getting his team to win. He going to the allstar game its only right. Lets GO LAKERS !!!

  • A Rare Heir 2 Rare Air says...
  • The son of the greatest basketball player in history averages just 0.9 points. But you would never guess that by listening to him describe his freshman season at Illinois.

"I'm having so much fun," Jeff Jordan told me last week. "I'm glad I decided to give this a try."

    A try?

Yes, it's true. With no athletic scholarship offer, Michael Jordan's oldest boy had to join the Illini as a walk-on. He's averaging a measly 4.2 minutes per game and has made just three shots all season. Statistically, he sounds like a rare heir to Rare Air.

Jeff Jordan joined the Illinois basketball team as a walk-on and averages 4.2 minutes per game.

The refreshing thing is that, at Illinois, no one seems to care.

Nearly three months into his college career, Jeff isn't being deified by Illini fans. He said his classmates don't sweat him because of his dad or tease him because he can't do a 360-dunk.

Instead they're treating him like any other college student, which is all Jeff ever hoped for in the first place.

"I actually dealt with it more in high school than I do now," Jeff said of the attention he often receives because of his father. "On campus everyone has been great. Sometimes we'll go out to eat when we're out of town and people will (approach) me. But my teammates look out for me in those situations."

    He pauses.

"Even then, it really doesn't affect me much," Jeff said. "I've been dealing with it my whole life."

It's not as if Jeff hasn't received any fanfare during the last few months. When Illinois opened the season with an exhibition tour of Canada, Jeff had to conduct a separate press conference each day to accommodate the throng of media that was tracking his every move. One evening, when players went eat dinner, strangers began yelling Jeff's name and taking his picture as he stepped off the team bus.

Of course, at that point, he was just glad to be on the Illini roster.

Wasn't long ago when Jeff figured his basketball career would end after his final high school game. He averaged 15 points as a senior at Loyola Academy in Highland Park, Illinois, but without any big-time scholarship offers, he seemed content to give up the sport and enroll at Illinois on an academic scholarship.

"I was just going to be a regular student," he said. "But then I met the guys on the team and got along with all of them so well. I figured I'd come in with no expectations and see how I did the first year. If it didn't work out, it didn't work out." Even though he hasn't played much of a factor for the Illini, the 6-foot-1, 185-pound Jeff said he couldn't be more pleased with his progress the first year.

A wing player in high school, Jeff has moved to point guard at the request of head coach Bruce Weber, who praised the freshman for adapting to a new position.

"Even if you were a point guard in high school, the intensity level here is so much higher," Weber said. "Some freshmen get in there and play scared. But he doesn't do that. He's very aggressive."

Weber said Jeff's biggest weakness is his 3-point shooting, but he praised his midrange game and his ability to slash into the paint.

Still, according to Weber, Jeff's most impressive characteristic is the way he conducts himself off the court.

"He's as humble as any kid we have in our program," Weber said. "He's proud to be Michael's son, but at the same time he enjoys being Jeffery Jordan."

As for dear old dad, Michael Jordan was on hand to watch Illinois play Duke in the Maui Invitational in November, but he's yet to attend a game in Champaign because of his duties as the part-owner of the NBA's Charlotte Bobcats.

Still, that doesn't mean Jeff isn't asking his old man for advice.

"He's pretty hands-off," Jeff said. "He only gives me information when I come to him and ask for it. I still take advantage of it. I'm not doing it as much as I did at the beginning of the year, but if I have any questions or I want him to watch me on TV and critique me, I call him so he can give me some feedback."

The information seems to be coming in handy. Weber said he wouldn't be at all surprised if Jeff became a significant contributor for the Illini by the time he's a junior.

If that happens, the spotlight that seems so dim may suddenly become bright.

  • Nah dupe!! I dont think that they will come out on top of the Western Conference. When all these bnig teams in the west start to turn up the heat coming down to the end of the season. I think if they keep playin the way they are they probably will come out in the top 3 butif not they might be either 5 or 6.
As for him beating LB or Kobe for the MVP, i think thats rediculous. He is not playin in these guys category.

  • Last week you posted a blog that referenced who was the Best PG in the League. Me personally I said it was Chris Paul but there were some cats on here who were saying Nash, Baron etc. After watching that game last night there is no doubt in mind that Chris Paul if the Best PG in the league bar none.

Everybody just watch Chris Paul is the next Isiah Thomas on the court. Before it is all said and done New Orleans will win a Championship or two.

  • Man I been on CP since he was in high school and dropped to his knees and cried when he got his 61st point in a game he dedicated to his grandfather who had just died at age 61! Shit was very humbling! And he tore duke ass up in college! He's just a good person that new orleans the city needed! Is out when he get the chance and is approachable too! His game is crazy good! MVP of 1st half by far! As for coming out the west, if they healthy they can beat anyone 4 out of 7 games but it will be hard as hell! He is always in control and takes over only when he needs to! He's a modern day isiah thomas to me! Just an amazing player!

See yall all star weekend? I'm only an hour from new orleans so I'll be there!

  • CP is one of the best players in the league and if his team continues its success he should finish in the top 3 in MVP. K.G. And Kobe are still the front runners ... as far as the N.O. team goes there is no way they can beat the Suns, Spurs, Mavs or even Jazz in a 7 games playoff series ... they are still a couple years away from LEGIT championship contention ....
