Flashback Fridays: Remember Young Kobe Challenging The G.O.A.T. Jordan in The '98 All-Star Game in NYC!?

Posted on January 25, 2008 2:41 AM

FRI-DAY! And Thank God It is...and we here.

All-Star starting lineups were named last night. Kevin Garnett led all votes with 2,399,148.
KG.jpg

KG will join Dwight Howard, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Jason Kidd for the East. I actually had voted for Mr. Big Shot Chauncey Billups instead of D. Wade, but dope lineup nonetheless.

Kobe led the way for the West with 2,004,940 votes.
kobe_bryant1.jpg

K-B 24 will be joined by 'Melo, his teammate A.I., Tim Duncan (great player ... but who wants to see this dude start? Snooze button.) and Yao Ming (All 1.7 mil of his votes came via China, but I'm not hating. Amare is more deserving, though).

Maan, the All-Star Game in the Big Easy should be a lot of fun to watch, but I don't care what anyone says, these All-Star Games, scratch that, Weekends (from the Three-Point Shootout to the Dunk contest all the way to the Game itself) just ain't the same.

SOHH today, we're Flashing back 10 years ago to Kobe's very first All-Star Game, at where else, but the mecca of basketball - NYC!

Maan, think back, son! This was a goody; a goody indeed. I mean Kobe (#8 jersey, afro) was the young gunna, not shy about taking it to the G.O.A.T. Michael Jordan.

Oh SOHH many highlights in this little clip alone.

:05 Five seconds in and Jordan goes in on KG, with an ill head-fake and in the lane with a J.

:35 Kobe gets the an outlet in transition and throws down a 360. Oooh-Wee. Even Bob Costas got excited.

1:05 Oh.My.GOD Kobe and KG on a 2-on-1 fast break, Garnett throws the ball up into outer space, Kobe grabs it off Pluto and finishes with a two-hand flush. Jesus.

1:45 MJ plays clean up. Shawn Kemp's fat ass (dude was ill back in the day as a Sonic, though) makes an unecessary pass to Grant Hill, who doesn't finish under the basket. Have nooo feeeear, Jordan's here and the lights are on and they want a show oh oh oh oh

1:50 Jordan uses Kobe with a baseline fade away.

2:00 Jordan goes opposite baseline, another fade away on Kobe, AND 1. (SOHH mean and vicious).

3:20 MJ gets Kobe up in the air, David Robinson bites on his fake too ... scores on both.

3:25 Kobe goes around the back in the open court to Duncan.

4:23 Kobe goes behind his own back on Mutombo and puts up a high-arcing tear-drop, while flying out of bounds. NYC goes nuts. A star is born.

My point with all this - We ain't ever seeing an All-Star Game like this. Jordan-Kobe!? Whaaaaat!? Not in this lifetime.

Holla at me, though.

Watching this back in the day did you know Kobe was going to be a superstar? Scream at me with your favorite All-Star memories!

Your Boy,

SOHH Ballsy

  • You're right, we def. aint seein another All-Star game like that. And i agree with Bill, D. Wade shouldn't even be an all-star this year. He hasn't done shit for the Heat and neither has Shaq's old ass. I don't think Iverson shoulda made it either, Amare is more deserving of the starting spot than Yao is, and Duncan's good but dude is boring. They should stop letting fans vote and let the coaches or somebody else do it.

  • Nobody's saying it, but you know what helped D. Wade? All those damn T-Mobile commercials with Sir Charles. Ha! Of course the All-Star Game's a popularity contest.

    @Bixby
I said Amare over Yao because Phoenix has a better record than Houston. I think that has to be considered, even if the Suns have Nash and Marion.

YOU KNOW YOU PROVED MY POINT FOR ME.AMARE HAS BETTER PLAYERS AROUND HIM AND STILL ISNT DOING WHAT YAO IS DOING.ITS EASY TO DROP BUCKETS WHEN YOU HAVE A BETTER SURROUNDING CAST.DONT PUNISH YAO B/C HE DOESNT DUNK THE BALL ON EVERY PLAY.2 PTS IS 2 PTS WHETHER ITS A DUNK OR LAYUP.AMARE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE ONE OF THE GREATEST POWER FOWARDS EVER BUT HASNT COME CLOSE B/C HE DOESNT PLAY DEFENSE,DOESNT REBOUND AS GOOD AS HE SHOULD, AND DOES ALOT OF CHERRY PICKING WHEN HE SHOULD BE HITTING THE GLASS HARDER.BUT WE CAN AGREE TO DISAGREE LIKE ADULTS.PEACE!

You Can Hate On Wade But It Aint All On Him Cuz The Heat Is Playin' Like Shit... They Didnt Keep Kobe Out The Starters When The Lakers Were Lame'n it Up...Or Jordan When The Wizards Had A Garbage Season...
Yao Will Forever Be Startin' As Long As The Fans Vote...And Next Year That One Chinese Cat From The Bucks Gonna Be Startin' too..

Im From SA and I Cant Stand The Spurs... But Damn Aint No Power Forward Fuckin' With Duncan Right... He's Boring ... Cuz He Aint Talkative And Flashy... But Garnett And Boozer And Dirk And Amare Get Made Look Stupid when they play against him and get shut down...

  • ^^^ Idiot cant even spell "adoring".

Anyway, Kobe is the best right now and if he can prove he can win a championship without Shaq then he will probably go down as one of the top 10 of all-time. Right now I got him behind Magic Johnson but in front of Larry Bird on my list. He's just accomplished so much already and he realistically has 6 more good years as long as he stays healthy. Shaq has no more healthy years because he is too lazy in the off season to get in shape. If the young boy Bynum comes back strong after being injured and continues to double-double and learns how to play better defense. Then I can see another Lakers Dynasty happening. They better start feeding him whatever Dwight Howards eating, cause that guy right now is the biggest beast at center physically that I have ever seen.

  • My All Star Weekend memory goes back 20 years ago, the only time the game was played in the Chi, @ the OLD Chicago Stadium, I was 13 @ the time, I helped set the place up 4 the weekend festivities, met a few of the All Stars that year, but my MAIN memory would have 2 be of me stepping on2 the court, someone passed me a basketball & told me 2 try 2 dunk it, so I took the ball, started from the free throw line, took off from the dotted & threw it down, I was especially geeked because that was the first time I had ever dunked a ball

I'm a huge Laker fan dating back to the 80's that's when my Pops out me on when they had Magic, Kareem, Kurt Rambis, Michael Thompson etc. I think your right when you said that if Bynum comes back and continues to do what he has been doing then we can defintely start another Dynasty.
But you said you thought Kobe had to win another Championship to be in your top 10 all time. Are you talking top 10 guards or players period. Kobe is already a top 10 guard of all time and I think he is top 10 all time player too.

When you look at how clutch he is and his willingness to take the big shot knowone has done that since Jordan. His ability to score, rebound, assist and his Defense is incredible. Outside of Jordan and Oscar Robertson has there ever been a more complete player?

  • Ummm...why is Amare more deserving? Yao is the best center in the West and he gets it done on a daily basis with a team of scrubs and one legged, poor-man's Kobe. Only argument possible is that the Suns have a better record...but come on, Amare has a 2xMVP(best pg next to Paul), one of the all around best players (Marion), and a bench that could all arguably start their own team and have a better record than the Sonics and Timberwolves. Yao is better offensively( can make his own shots, passes, even past constant double coverage whereas most analyst will argue that Amare is a product of Nash), defensively( Yao will not get abused by real big men like Al Jefferson, Bynum, and Dwight...sorry). So yeah, stop blaming Yao's votes on the Chinese...maybe, simply put, he is the best center on the West ballot...If anything, you should be arguing that Nash and Paul are more deserving than Iverson.

  • I love watching old Jordan clips, doesn't matter if its before or after the original retirement - 92, not 98 for the young retards who dont know - the sheer dominance is just crazy.

He really was Superman, fuck Shaq Hybrid, tis was the truth. The best way to explain it : Kobe is stronger that Jordan ever was, he is faster than MJ, has better range, better athlete, etc. But one on one Jordan would send Kobe home crying, bitchin about how life aint fair and probably depressed and suicidal, Bison Dele anyone?
