his sentence was unfair. I was talking to my buddy thats did time, and he said he was in the joint for 3 years and never met a SINGLE guy in there for dog fighting. He said when he was in the county there was a guy in for dog fighting and he got 60 days and it was his 2nd offense! First offense was a fine. So for them to throw 2 years at that man with no priors, with his charities he gives to, and all the legal money he makes and pays taxes on, it's a CRIME. Yeah he was guilty, and yeah he needs to face consequences, but justice was not done in Virginia yesterday. I believe in justice and that wasn't it.

it's racial simply b/c he facing charges. you are correct in that they charged him within the guidelines, but the question become why is he facing federal charges to begin with? Is dog fighting a federal crime or is it a state or local crime? How many FBI agents have you seen in your lifetime investigating a dog fight allegation? I can guess you've seen NONE. He was facing charges within his county and charges were dropped and picked up again AFTER the feds decided to indite him. I think they just tried to make an example of him. The sentencing wasn't fair because if I got caught for dogfighting I wouldn't be in jail for that long. And the judge said that he didn't truly believe that Vick was sincere with his apology. He also said that his involvement was more than Vick said it was. Whatever right. I love dogs too, but the sentence was still overkill. He should have given him eleven months. Enough to get sick of jail, but not a felony conviction either. Now I know federal guidelines have a certain minimum that you can give someone, so he should have issued the minimum.

Peace was sentenced to 18 months in prison, Phillips was sentenced to 21 months in prison, and Vick was sentenced to 24 months in prison..

While imposing his sentence, Hudson said, “You may have thought this was sporting but it was very callous and cruel.”

Hudson chose to stay within federal sentencing guidelines when he handed down the prison sentences for Peace and Phillips. He could have sentenced the men up to five years in prison, if he found the circumstances warranted it.

Vick got less than half of the maximum penalty. The shit was FAIR.

Mike Vick got a harsh punishement, but he aint even help his situation. If i was a judge, i would have given him the same sentence, or maybe a little less but not by much. Plus u have to consider that Mike Vick played a bigger part in the dogfighting ring. He financed it, and allowed the fights to happen on his property.

I think we have to be very careful when we say that the sentence was fair because it fell under the guidelines of what they could give him. Dog fighting has been big underground, and other people have been caught under the animal cruelty umbrella (see DMX), and he was not made an example of. So someone needed to be used as an example, some one big. But this again isn't black or white, they do this all the time for criminals in general (Charles Manson for serial killers). Bottom line, people need to stop doing stuff and getting away with it because they are famous, and or have money. THAT is not fair. Some things in america are about race, that is true, but some things are about right and wrong. He knew what he was doing, and that many young people (white or black) look up to him.

Being a popular black athlete in this country has always been predicated on the idea of making white people comfortable with who you are as a black person. Why do you think the media goes after Barry Bonds so hard? It's because throughout his whole ordeal he has refuse to be contrite and apologetic for his steroid situation. As black people we have always had to fight to get respect in this country and today is no different. I'm suppose to throw the book at Vick, but yet George Bush gets a pass with Iraq and Hurricane Katrina, The governor of Louisiana and the prosecution in Jena get a pass, while the institutional racism in this country, continues to infect every aspect of this american culture. Life isn't fair so that's not really a good question. I wonder why the Feds decided to get involved, I mean in the time of terrorism and such it seems odd that the Federal Government is so concerned with dog fighting. Vick pissed off some powerful people and you see were he is...shit it was all good just a year ago..

Anyway what he did was wrong, there's nothing you can say to defend what he did. Also bring up other people killing animals doesn't help Vick's cause because you are saying they are wrong for hunting animals, so Vick was wrong for what he did.

If Vick was smart enough to put the property in someone elses name he wouldn't be in prison right now, he could have used his celebrity status to go to trial. Vick should have been smarter than he was, at the end of the day he has no one to blame but himself. People act like the US is not racist anymore, like something changed over night.

Vick will never play in the NFL again, once he gets out of the Feds he might have to serve some time at the state pen and then the NFL could suspend Vick after he's done with this prison time. I think what would be a good project for you would be to do some research on the experience of black people in this country and the effect that racism has had on almost EVERY aspect of our society. Have you ever seen the videos of how they are treated? Do you know how animals are treated before they get to your plate? Furthermore, don't forget the fact that in this country there was a time that "man's best friend" was used by white people as a way to torture and keep black people in line in this country. Remember that slaves who ran away from the plantations were tracked down by bloodhounds and in many cases ravaged and attacked. Then during the civil rights movement animals such as german shepherds were used to attack blacks who were fighting to eliminate jim crow laws and segregation. This love for dogs in this country by white people, psychologically speaking, comes from some of these experiences. It can be said that less than 50 years ago in this country, dogs were treated better than blacks in america. In contrast the indifference by many blacks when it comes to dogs also partly comes from these experiences in my humble opinion.

i dont think that its completely fair due to the fact that while vick was "bankrolling the enterprise" there are other kennels that others are buying the dogs putting them in the kennels (i think) and leaving these dogs in deplorable conditions. the feds find these kennels and are basically slapping their wrists for hundreds of dogs that have been neglected. im not sure that any of you have seen the hbo special referring to the kennel located somewhere in the state of alabama and someone caught all this footage undercover and basically gave this dude a 275,000 fine and probation...not to justify what vick did.....fine and probation and vick actually time in prision...those cats probably laughing they ass off.......

Considering he could've had up to 5 years in prison, 23 months is not bad...He's already got 1 month it so he'll be credited for that and with good behavior he'll be out in about 18 months....For what he did...That's not bad at all. To the Worldisyours, many people on this blog realize that would Vick did was a crime and he broke the law, that part cannot be argued. However, again to say that Racism doesn't play a factor when Black people get sentenced I think is a little naive. Why is their a racial disparity in the application of the death penalty? How come blacks are 12% of the U.S. population but 46% of the prison population (and please no one give me the lame undocumented "excuse" that blacks commit more crimes because it is false) How come Blacks get longer sentences than their white counterparts? Redrum213 just mentioned that they JUST reversed the crack/powder cocaine sentences, yes they did AFTER all these years and the only reasoned that happened is because they was a concerted effort to get the law reversed. Many people keep talking about what the "law" is and I understand that to have a civil society laws need to be in affect. However, laws need to be administered JUSTLY in order for society to flourish. In this country JUSTICE is something that black people don't get too much of. It seems we keep focusing on what the law is when we should be more concerned about what justice is. Those laws that are not administered justly, and the laws that shouldn't be on the books need to be addressed. Seperate but equal used to be a law, Jim Crow was a law, just because something is law doesn't mean we shouldn't analyze it and debate it, especially if there is a racial component to it.

How much money has the federal government used in pursuing this case? They can't find anything better to do with the millions of dollars they have wasted on this case (how about putting that money in schools or something else productive?) I've done 9 years locked up for illegal acts that I did in fact commit. The fact is that I look myself in the mirror everyday and see a man that stopped committing crimes because he no longer wanted to do the time. No, I did what I did, I got caught, and I did my time. I didn't bitch, I didn't think it was unjust, I knew it was wrong and that if I got caught I'd have to do some time.

I'm not arguing for the wrong people, I'm arguing for the innocent victims of crime. I'm saying that even the victimless criminals are still criminals that run the risk of being incarcerated if they act in an illegal manner. That's the bottom line. I sat and saw the worst of the worst in full effect, Joliet, Statesville, Shawnee, Pinckneyville, Sheridan, and Menard. I've seen people who were salty they got caught because someone snitched. Now, I'm a full believer in Stop Snitchin', but let's be realistic, if you're doing something bogus and someone's with you or someone sees you, as a criminal you HAVE TO REALIZE THAT PEOPLE SNITCH! 23 months. Michael Vick has been rail roaded. Michael Vick is being rail roaded. Recently I discovered a web site called "Campaign to Sack Michael Vick". The site was disconcerting but very revealing. It detailed a plan to have Michael Vick sacked (that it the term that was used) from the Falcons and eventually sacked from the NFL. A listing of endorsers was porvided along with plans to pressure them to drop their endorsement of Vick. I must say they were quite successful. I had always questioned why did some who discovered the dog fighting operation in 2001 wait until 2007 before revealing the operation. That is approximately a 6 year delay. Think about the number of animals that were abused during this time period. Go to http://sacknick.net/ it might cause one to ask "what's going on. I also questioned the proscutor recommendation that Vick receive jail time and then recommend that Taylor who put the operation together receive no jail time. Even the judge did not go along with this. He indiated there would be too much disparity in the prison sentences. Thur he recommended that Taylor receive 2 months. Was this really about dog fighting or was it mere a ruse with Michael Vick as the target. Plea bargaining. What ever happened to getting at the truth. Maybe we will learn more about what was actually going on during the Virgiia trial. The defense attorney has recommended that Michael Vick receive a jury trial. This should be interesting. Some said Michael Vick pleaded guilty. That means nothing. Many after being pressured have plead guily when pressed if they believe that the chances wee limited when three had plea bargained. Many wil lie during plea bargaining if it gets them a reduced sentence. They might plead guilty if they were informed that additonal charges would be made if they did not plead guilty. Under the same circumstances I might plead guilty although my involvement might be limited, etc. .
